  • An empty hangar after the 'Red Arrows', Britain's Royal Air Force aerobatic team, have left their UK base at RAF Scampton for the sunnier climate and clearer skies of the Mediterranean at RAF Akrotiri in Cyprus. A lone engineer, left behind to continue the preparations before the start of the Summer air show season walks in the gap of the giant hangar doors. A yellow dustbin that collects foreign objects (FOD) is in the middle of the floor. The team will spend six weeks in Cyprus refining their air display techniques and skills before performing in front of the public from May onwards. Since 1965 they have flown over 4,000 such shows in 52 countries. The hangar dates to World War 2, housing Lancaster bombers of 617 Dambusters squadron who attacked the damns of the German Ruhr valley on 16th May 1943 using the Bouncing Bomb. This version of BAE Systems Hawks are low-tech, without computers nor fly-by-wire technology, Some of the team's aircraft are 25 years old and their airframes require frequent overhauls due.

  • Two rolls of the red fireproof material Nomex made by the Du Pont corporation, is stored ready for tailoring by a bespoke seamstress at Dale Techniche, Nelson, Lancashire where every Winter, the elite 'Red Arrows', Britain's Royal Air Force aerobatic team place about 40 pilot suit orders and 180 blue (support ground crew) suits before their Summer air show season starts. Containing 5% Kevlar, all suits are made to fit exactly each team member. Fouteen different measurements are taken before the first suit is cut, each one requiring approximately three metres of dyed cloth. When a suit is complete, each one is signed inside by the machinist..The clothing factory also designs the Red Arrows badges, each requiring 15,000 stitches as well as suits for racing drivers, soldiers and pilots from other aerobatic teams. The Red Arrows have, since 1965 flown over 4,000 air shows in 52 countries.

  • Blue and red dye stains on the 'line' at RAF Scampton, Lincolnshire, home base of the elite 'Red Arrows', Britain's prestigious Royal Air Force aerobatic team. The spilled dye provides the team with their distinctive red, white and blue smoke (a vegetable dye and diesel fuel mixture) during their air show display routines. While on the ground, this non-toxic derv/vegetable dye is injected into a vacuum under pressure into the jets' modified belly-pod which in varying amounts of concentrate, gives off a smoke via three nozzles that point down into the jet's efflux, the exhaust that exits the jet pipe at 500°C. For a display, the pods hold enough dye for 5 minutes of white smoke, 1 of blue and 1 of red while the Synchro pair uses slightly more. 7,200 gallons of dye during the entire 2004 season and since 1965 they have flown over 4,000 such shows in 52 countries.

  • Five Hawk jets from the elite 'Red Arrows', Britain's prestigious Royal Air Force aerobatic team, almost touch in mid-air at an altitude of approximately 4,100 feet in the Mediterranean skies above Cyprus. The texture of mottled cirrus cloud provides a soft background for the  aircraft which approach each other at a combined air speed of approximately 800 miles per hour (1,200 kph). The Opposition Loop is flown by the two pilot partners known as the Synchro Pair who fly independently of the other seven in the second-half of their 25-minute show. The two jets have vegetable dye and derv (diesel fuel) smoke mixture coloured red, blue or white. Here it traces the paths of both airplanes which curve from the edges of the frame to the centre (center). To the crowds far below, both look as if they are on collision course but will safely pass within feet of each other.

  • On the 100th anniversary of the Wright Brothers' first flight at Kitty Hawk in 1903, the elite 'Red Arrows', Britain's Royal Air Force aerobatic team, fly over the RAF Museum in Hendon, North London as part of the celebrations to honour this momentous date in aviations history. Coming from behind RAF personnel who are lined up to meet Prince Phillip, the Duke of Edinburgh, the ten Hawk jet aircraft make a perfect Diamond as they trail red, white and blue smoke across the blue skies above London. Since 1965 the team have flown over 4,000 such shows in 52 countries.

  • Relatives and friends remember the missing a week after the attacks on the twin towers on 9/11. During a journey into America's hinterlands, days after the September 11th attacks in New York and Washington DC, eccentric New Yorkers gather at the city's Armory to offer help and support by handing our fluffy bunnies to passers-by. The streets between 66th and 67th Streets, in the heart of Manhattan's Upper East Side, DNA samples were taken at the Armory so human remains might be identified. It was therefore a point of focus for those with missing relatives who attached thousands of posters to walls with pictures and messages to loved-ones in the hope of being reunited. Emotions were running high and many citizens offered spiritual aide such as food and drink. In outpourings of grief, anger and patriotic rhetoric, flags were flown as never before as  America sought to express their emotions and unity..

They curve round in a similar trajectory as seen on the bending taxi-way. Freshly-ploughed English fields with properties, roads, hedgerows and cold war nuclear solios are seen below on a perfect day for aerobatic displaying. After some time off, spare days like this are used to hone their manual aerobatic and piloting skills before re-joining the air show circuit.   • Squadron Leader Spike Jepson, leader of the elite 'Red Arrows', Britain's prestigious Royal Air Force aerobatic team, demonstrates the Corkscrew manoeuvre to his group of pilots and visitors in the briefing room at their RAF Scampton, Lincolnshire headquarters. Using two scaled model Hawk jet aircraft he shows how their formation is to be flown on their next training flight. Five autumn and winter months are spent teaching new recruits manual aerobatic display flying while the older members (who rotate positions) learn new disciplines within the routine. Their leaning curve is steep, even for these accomplished fast-jet aviators who had already accumulated 1,500 hours in fighters. By Summer they need every aspect of their 25-minute displays honed to perfection. In this meeting room they meet before and after every flight discussing safety, merits and failures.

The texture of mottled cirrus cloud provides a soft background for the  aircraft which approach each other at a combined air speed of approximately 800 miles per hour (1,200 kph). The Opposition Loop is flown by the two pilot partners known as the Synchro Pair who fly independently of the other seven in the second-half of their 25-minute show. The two jets have vegetable dye and derv (diesel fuel) smoke mixture coloured red, blue or white. Here it traces the paths of both airplanes which curve from the edges of the frame to the centre (center). To the crowds far below, both look as if they are on collision course but wil safely pass within feet of each other.

The armour-plated car, formerly named Cadillac One, is understood to cost around £1.1million and weighs at least four tonnes. 'The Beast' is flown to whichever country the US president is visiting and is reportedly armed with tear gas canisters, pump-action shotguns a life support machine and blood supply.

  • A Concorde supersonic airliner registration G-BOAB flies overhead during its service for British Airways - en-route for a foreign destination. The delta-winged jet was first flown in 1969, entering commercial service in 1976 for 27 years until the disastrous in Paris ended its viability. Aérospatiale-BAC Concorde was a turbojet-powered supersonic passenger airliner or supersonic transport (SST). With a program cost of £1.3 billion and a unit cost of £23 million in 1977.

  • 'Counting the Cost' is a memorial sculpture in glass designed by Renato Niemis which is outside at the American Air Museum at the Imperial War Museum, RAF Duxford, England. The sculpture comprises of 52 toughened clear float glass panels, each etched with the outlines of 7,031 aircraft missing in action in operations flown by American air forces (Air Force and Navy Groups) from Britain during the Second World War. The images are scaled at 1:240, diagonally pointing towards the blue summer sky once filled with bombers and fighters during the air campaign over Germany and France.   • A 40th anniversary celebration cake has been baked for the elite 'Red Arrows', Britain's prestigious Royal Air Force aerobatic team who are soon to appear. Displayed in a hospitality tent at the Kemble Air Show, the iced gateau has a red ribbon and an image of nine aircraft in mid-flight. A bouquet of flowers and assorted cutlery for the forthcoming lunch is alongside. Blue paper is draped over the top adding to the patriotic red, white and blue colours. After several identities, the Red Arrows started life near this location in 1964 at RAF Little Rissington in Gloucesterhire. Their name originates from the French 'Fleches Noirs', or Black Arrows, so in England, a new team was established flying black Hawker Hunters in the colour of their Squadron 111. As the Red Arrows diaplay team, they have since flown over 4,000 shows in 52 countries.

  • During a journey into America's hinterlands, days after the September 11th attacks in New York and Washington DC, we see anti-war graffiti written in a circular chalk graphic on the path in front of the Lincoln Memorial of Washington DC's National Mall. The words 'Break the Cycle (of) War' appear as early morning joggers blur in the background beyond whom, the Washington Memorial is seen below the rising sun and a rising mist. Soon afterwards the graffiti was hosed away by park rangers, eager to remove anti-militarist and unpatriotic sentiments at a time before the military was about to mobilise once again with many American lives lost. In outpourings of grief, anger and patriotic rhetoric, flags were flown as never before as  America sought to express their emotions and a unity. A spotlight shines across the bank to show passing motorists the creative stars and stripes artwork on the roadside. Sinking Spring's Native American tribe in this were known as the Minsi or Wolf tribe who had the reputation for being quite warlike at times..
