  • With few visitors to see, a young boy pees into the water surrounding a model town at the Splendid China model village, the 30 hectares large tourist attraction in the city of Shenzhen, China. The kid aims into the water with his mother's help. In the background we see some of the 50,000 ceramic figures and scenes from a period in Chinese history and further away, modern skyscrapers in the metropolis contrasting with ancient, traditional village life. Splendid China is an attraction at the Overseas Chinese Town, Shenzhen that has scaled down replicas of China's historical buildings, wonderful scenes and folk customs. The scale models are of a 1:15 with 100 miniaturized landmarks such as The Terracotta Warriors; Great Wall; Forbidden City; Old Summer Palace etc. all laid out according to their geographic locations.

The church may have survived the Great Fire of London unscathed, and only lost one window in the Second World War, but on 24 April 1993 was one of the many buildings to be damaged by an IRA bomb.

  • The shadows of two passing locals approach the tiny Cameron-run post office hut at Kyleakin on the Isle of Skye, Scotland. We see in the foreground the freshly painted Royal Mail post box which is lit by early morning sunshine telling us that the next collection is at 2.45pm despite it being 8.50am. This branch serves the local community of this Skye town, close to the Skye Bridge and is not only a place to post letters and packages but to buy miscellaneous supplies like newspapers and food at a time when rural sub-post offices are threatened with closure by a financially-troubled Royal Mail. Small villages like this often say that the post office is the ties its folk together, acting as a nucleus for information about village life. Their closure would therefore mean that the fabric of such remote communities are in jeopardy.

  • An elderly lady makes her way from her community village Memorial Hall which she has been volunteering this winter morning as part of a charity funds raising event. The lady might be old and frail but her spirit is such that she still finds the time to integrate into community life and remains active despite her years. Walking beneath the wrought-iron sign in Cleeve Prior, Worcestershire, she edges under tentatively to make her way home wearing a quilted coat and her wedding ring on her gnarled hands. A chilly late-morning sun shines across the architecture of the building and this is the look of a lady happy with her morning's activities with fellow parishioners.

  • Making their way across a snow-swept road in Norwood, south London, an elderly couple tread warily as the snow turns to slush. It's a bleak, raw morning as the new snowfall has settled on this suburban street where cars are parked on icy kerbs. Wearing sensible hats and coats and non-slip boots the pensioners are vulnerable to icy black spots which may endanger their stability because old people are susceptible to falls and injury at these hazardous times. A very monochrome landscape, we see little colour. Instead it is a scene of jeopardy and of an uncaring society for its older generations.

  • With the companionship of a pet dog, an elderly gentleman reminisces about the good old days with a life-long buddy at Alexandra Terrace, in the south Wales town of Abertillery (Welsh: Abertyleri). Together they lean against a stone wall of a road above and look down the hill of their street they may have lived all their lives. In the distance, a younger generation of young girls play at the far end. The men might once have been working men, old coal miners like many folk in this community whose  population rose steeply during the period of (now defunct) mining development in South Wales, being 10,846 in 1891 and 21,945 ten years later.   • It's a free for all as elderly pensioners sift through piles of clothing left outside a community hall at a 1986 jumble sale in the south Wales town of Abergavenney, Monmouthshire. Some hold up items of clothing and others are happy to stand back and watch while some young children descend some steps of this Victorian-era building during a charity event held by the local Lions club, whose volunteers help the elderly and the disadvantaged within their community. Property has been donated and the old folks' attention is on their finds which are within their price range, having to survive on meagre pensions.
