  • A middle-aged businessman looks up from paperwork during a working day in his 1970s Brussels office. The executive wearing a white shirt and tie pauses writing with a pencil to look over his glasses, past the In Tray and towards the viewer. There is no computer or electronic devices that describe this decade towards the end of the 20th century. The calendar shows us today's date of July 5th 1971. The picture shows us a memory of nostalgia in an era from the last century.

  • Holding drained pint beer glasses that symbolises an economic recession, City of London office workers gather to drink at lunchtime while dressed in red ties and white shirts, on the 23rd April, St George's Day, England's national day. In recent years, more English flags have become more prevalent in a resurgence of national pride and more citizens have come to work dressed with a red and white theme such as ties and shirts, hats or shoes. Anything for a little fun in such gloomy times. This anonymous trio have all agreed to dress identically and enjoy an early warm spell of good weather to show-off their dress sense and patriotism.

Grinning and looking smug in their upp-class social status, they are seated eccentrically and comically around a plastic table with a tablecloth, two Candelabras and their picnic lunch plates full of fine food.

  • An after-work Christmas party at Coates Wine Bar on London Wall (street) gathers energy after nine o'clock pm at a table near the bar. A group of three girls sing along to a karaoke machine while one of the three sticks out her tongue towards her friend. They are each drinking glasses of white wine and two packets of Marlboro and one of Silk Cut cigarettes lies on the table surrounded by their handbags and other possessions including a camera. There are other people in the background including two men at the bar and a man on his own edging past with a cigarette in his right hand. It is a gloomy place to party with little artificial light to colour (color) the scene. The City of London has a resident population of under 10,000 but a daily working population of 311,000. The City of London is a geographically-small City within Greater London, England. The City as it is known, is the historic core of London from which, along with Westminster, the modern conurbation grew. The City's boundaries have remained constant since the Middle Ages but it is now only a tiny part of Greater London. The City of London is a major financial centre, often referred to as just the City or as the Square Mile, as it is approximately one square mile (2.6 km) in area. London Bridge's history stretches back to the first crossing over Roman Londinium, close to this site and subsequent wooden and stone bridges have helped modern London become a financial success.

  • A Polish man leans over to put the finishing touches to two small snowmen that now occupy a park bench on Goose Green in East Dulwich, Southwark, South London, England. This otherwise green space has seen snow falls that have gripped this part of the capital with unsalted road surfaces and commuting nightmares. But this young man is having fun with his diminutive snowy creations who have been dressed up in his and a friend's glasses, their scarves and gloves and with locally-found twigs. The park is relatively quiet with only a hint of the chaos elsewhere but the time spent on pointless pursuits is one way of enjoying adverse weather, rather than the more serious business of getting to work, proving also that snow brings out the childish nature in us all.

  • Half-way across the Gulf of Mexico, between Miami and Cancun in Mexico, Carnival Cruise's Fun Ship Ecstasy's passengers are on the Sun deck to enjoy the first few days sailing on the tropical seas. One of the ship's photographers has passed around a ship's circular life ring buoy through which one busty blonde lady has posed for a photograph and is about to pass it on to her nearest neighbour. She is wearing a garish pink and yellow bikini and is holding the life-saving device so that only her breasts are showing, obscuring her face. We see the name of the ship, Ecstasy, around the ring and the plastic ropes are falling on the lady's cleavage, forming circles around her bosoms. In the background, another cruise traveller (traveler) wears a straw sun hat and is also sitting on a blue sun lounger. We see exposed, tanned skin and it looks baking hot with the tropical sun at its zenith, directly overhead at mid-day. Carnival was a pioneer in the concept of cheaper and shorter cruises. Its ships are known for their Las Vegas decor and entertainment. The line calls its ships The Fun Ships. The MS Ecstasy is a Fantasy class cruise ship featuring two pools, whirlpools, a variety of dining options, nightclubs, a casino, and duty-free shopping. After Hurricane Katrina, she spent six months in New Orleans serving as quarters for refugees and relief workers. The Lido is a magnet for families, select groups, the young and old and represents an amalgam of humanity who enjoy the benefits of outdoor bathing and the friendship of meeting old friends and new acquaitances. We see two men of Afro-carribean origin who have a corner of the Lido to themselves. One wears a towel wrapped around his lower-body and sits, arms folded with a look of territorial superiority while the other applies sun lotion to his leg. There is little space left on the full pavement which retains its solar heat long after the sun has left the quadrangle of the lido's oblong design but their colourful towels and possessions are spread out on the paving stones along with childrens' toys including an Action Man toy soldier who is also tanning himself. It is a scene of fun for all ages and backgrounds. Brockwell Lido is a large, open air swimming pool in Brockwell Park, Herne Hill, London. It opened in July 1937, closed in 1990 and after a local campaign was re-opened in 1994. • Two army officers from Ecuador admire an air-to-ground PARS 3 LR missile at the Paris Air Show, Le Bourget France. The two men (the man on the right's name badge says M Pazmino), admire the sleek design of the missile called PARS 3 LR in German but known as TRIGAT-LR (Third Generation AntiTank, Long Range) and AC 3G in the French military, the missile is a high-precision 'fire-and-forget' weapon system for engaging mobile and stationary targets equipped with the latest generation of armour protection, such as tanks, field fortresses, bunkers and other high-value targets. • Boeing pilot sits in glass cockpit of the 787 Dreamliner (N787BX) at the Farnborough Airshow. On its first flight outside of the US during its testing programme, the newest airliner in the Boeing aviation family, has arrived at the air show for a few days of exhibitions to the aerospace-buying community and the trade press. Later the public will have the chance to see this jet up close too. The Boeing 787 Dreamliner is a long range, mid-sized, wide-body, twin-engine jet airliner developed by Boeing Commercial Airplanes. It seats 210 to 330 passengers, depending on variant. Boeing states that it is the company's most fuel-efficient airliner and the world's first major airliner to use composite materials for most of its construction

  • An employee of an unidentified recycling company used by BAA (British Airports Authority) rakes through a mountain of glass bottles, piled high in a depsitory near Gatwick Airport, Sussex England. The drinks from these branded bottles have been consumed at airport terminal buildings and other BAA property and the man dressed in a fluorescent safety jacket scrapes the containers in readiness for transportation to another facility. The picture is an upright and with such a wide-angle view, we see the bottles stretching from the closest to the lens to the far end of the compartment in a mound of materials destined for a machine that will crush and transform them into new glass.

  • As if about to be crunched underfoot, shattered glass from the windows of offices in the historic City of London side-street, stickers and notices for Access (Mastercard) and American Express (Amex) credit cards lie on the disaster-strewn pavement (sidewalk). This is some of the debris lying about after the huge Bishopsgate bomb on 24th April 1993, London's most expensive terrorist atrocity during the Provisional Irish Republican Army's (IRA) sustained bombings on the British mainland. Buildings up to 500 metres away were damaged, with one and a half million square feet (140,000 sq m) of office space being affected and over 500 tonnes of glass broken. Costs of repairing the damage was estimated at £350 million and was possibly the IRA's most successful military tactic since the start of what was called the Troubles from 1969 onwards.
