  • On the very last day of British rule over its Hong Kong colony, we see two groups representing this colonial territory's population. Commuters walk through Chater Garden about to pass another group of older exercise class. Towering above them all is the Bank of China skyscraper, then the tallest building in Asia, As the last hours tick away before the transfer of sovereignty of Hong Kong from the United Kingdom to the Peoples Republic of China (PRC), often referred to as "The Handover" on June 30, 1997. Midnight of that day signified the end of British rule and the transfer of legal and financial authority back to China. Almost 7 million people call a territory of 1100 sq km home, squeezing onto only 10% of the available land space. This is a metropolis of high population density and one of the world's economic powerhouses.

  • During an August heatwave, the population of Brixton and many others from all over London, bask in the glorious weather at the Brockwell (Brixton) Lido in Brockwell Park, Herne Hill, South London. The Lido is a magnet for families, select groups, the young and old and represents an amalgam of humanity who enjoy the benefits of outdoor bathing and the friendship of meeting old friends and new acquaitances. We see two men of Afro-carribean origin who have a corner of the Lido to themselves. One wears a towel wrapped around his lower-body and sits, arms folded with a look of territorial superiority while the other applies sun lotion to his leg. There is little space left on the full pavement which retains its solar heat long after the sun has left the quadrangle of the lido's oblong design but their colourful towels and possessions are spread out on the paving stones along with childrens' toys including an Action Man toy soldier who is also tanning himself. It is a scene of fun for all ages and backgrounds. Brockwell Lido is a large, open air swimming pool in Brockwell Park, Herne Hill, London. It opened in July 1937, closed in 1990 and after a local campaign was re-opened in 1994. Brockwell Lido was designed by HA Rowbotham and TL Smithson of the London County Council's Parks Department to replace Brockwell Park bathing pond. It is now a Grade II listed building

  • Joined by two pigeons to separate them, a group of Segway tourists stop to hear their guide describe the medieval and Moorish Alfama district's history, ironically next to a crowd of like-minded pedestrians, on 11th July 2016, in Lisbon, Portugal. Segway tours have become controversial additions to the European city sightseeing scene, already being banned in Barcelona and Prague. But in Portuguese cities like Lisbon and Porto, Segway travellers still share narrow and busy streets and often, pavements, with locals on foot. • Reflected in the surrounding pond, we see the glorious Victoria Memorial, the beautiful marble structure built by the British still during the days of the colonial Indian Raj. Couples and families gather in the Memorial's grounds to experience the cool air of late-afternoon near the white, domed building. Built between 1906 and 1921, it is a majestic white marble building at the southern end of the Maidan (literally meaning open field, the largest urban park, a large expansive plain in central Calcutta city. Nowadays it is a museum and group activities are being discouraged due to the fears that pollution will damage this fine structure that honours Queen Victoria, then Empress of India.

  • A holy Sadhu man attracts a crowd on the Maidan in central Calcutta, India. Near some ballustrades built by the British during the last years of the Raj, the man is leaning forward on his knees and his head is buried in gravel. Practicing Tapas or Niyamas, is one form of Austerity that holy men like this perform to cleanse themselves of bad thoughts. It is a conservation of energy; an increase of power in the system by sense control; a process of positive-thought, self-imposed hardships and inner-strength - all to gain a higher being for oneself. They might stand in cold water in winter, stand on or bury their heads in earth. Niyamas also breeds non-violence, truthfullness, non-stealing, moderation, non-possessiveness, purity, contentment, discipline, study and surrender.

  • Banner-carrying Catholic pilgrims awaits arrival of Pope at Hyde Park rally during Pope Benedict XVI's papal tour of Britain 2010, the first visit by a pontiff since 1982. Taxpayers footed the £10m bill for non-religious elements, which largely angered a nation still reeling from the financial crisis. Pope Benedict XVI is the head of the biggest Christian denomination in the world, some one billion Roman Catholics, or one in six people. In Britain there are about five million Catholics but only a quarter of Catholics regularly attend Sunday Mass and some churches have closed owing to spending cuts.

  • The ancient Parthenon (circa 400 BC, the largest Doric temple ever built) sits on Acropolis hill surrounded by global tourists and scaffolding. Here the modern world's philosophy was born, once the centre of classical Greek culture which the world has inherited for its laws and forward-thinking. Mounted above the Athenian city within fortified 60m high walls, its history is a World Heritage Site, important because of its "universal symbols of the classical spirit and civilization and form the greatest architectural and artistic complex." The establishment of democracy, took a leading position amongst the other city-states of the ancient world.

  • Two old friends regularly spend afternoons sunbathing at Brixton Lido and talk of old times in the sun. The friends gather every morning in the summer at Brockwell (Brixton) Lido. This is a favourite place in the capital for varied groups of people to meet, swim or just hang out like these London taxi drivers who regularly meet for exercise sessions, accumulating sun tans during long periods in the sunshine. Brockwell Lido in Herne Hill SE24 was originally built in 1937 at a time of coastal and city pool-building but went into decline when bathers preferred to holiday in warmer Spain. Its revival happened when local entrepreneurs re-opened the business and it now enjoys a reputation for some of the best urban swims in the UK.

  • Members of the campaign to save nearby Carnegie Library in Herne Hill and closed by Lambeth council, organise a pop-up library and party in Ruskin Park, SE24 on 21st June 2016, in south London, United Kingdom. Local players improvise folk tunes in summer sunshine after their library was shut since 31st March. Children, the elderly and other adult groups have been prevented from using the building uphill from this location as Lambeth decide how to use the public space, bequeathed to the community by philanthropist, Andrew carnegie in 1911. This is a favourite place in the capital for varied groups of people to meet, swim or just hang out like these London taxi drivers who regularly meet for exercise sessions, accumulating sun tans during long periods in the sunshine. Bare except for their costumes, they stretch and yawn, read a newspaper and lean against a railing all the while swapping anecdotes and complaining grumpily about the state of the world near a brick wall that retains heat. Brockwell Lido in Herne Hill SE24 was originally built in 1937 at a time of coastal and city pool-building but went into decline when bathers preferred to holiday in warmer Spain. • Five elderly women on-lookers are lined against a wall outside the famous Ascot race course on Ladies' Day, the annual event on the English sporting and social calendar in June. Each are standing in order of size, from tallest (who holds a Tesco supermarket bag) to smallest and watch as a man dressed in formal tails walks towards an entrance gate for the private members' enclosure. We see the two sides of the class system but it is a humerous scene. There is good nature between the two groups with smiles exchanged with one couple but discomfort from those behind.
