  • Near the chaotic road junction of Piazza Venezia in the Italian capital of Rome, we see a gridlock situation of traffic. Buses, cars and three scooters and riders appear to be stuck in the middle of a motoring nightmare as no-one goes anywhere - the progress of this journey to destinations and life itself, has ground to a halt. A bus passenger looks out resigned through her window, a driver on another vehicle rests his hand on a ledge and the riders are sandwiched between cars. The dot matrix sign on the 60 bus it mentions its own destination, the abbreviation for Piazza spelled as "P.za". The Piazza Venezia takes its name from the adjacent Palazzo Venezia, the former embassy in the city of the Republic of Venice. The piazza is at the foot of the Capitoline Hill and near the Roman Forum.

  • As blue light fades on a bitterly cold winter's evening, the barrier of an Austrian level-crossing has been lowered to stop traffic and allow a high-speed ICE-T train to continue on its route through, near Salzburg, Austria, Europe. OBB, the Austrian Federal Railways operate a network of 5,683 km makes them the by far largest railway-company in this country. Heavy snow has fallen in this region of the Alps and deposits have settled on the fences and the glowing red stop traffic light, signalling for motorists to halt at this dangerous road-crossing location. So fast is this mode of transport, it blurs past this cold, desolate spot where only one nearby house is next to the trackside. (From a story about travelling through 6 European countries by coach in 7 days).

  • A customs officer holds up a hand to traffic passing through the national border between Liechtenstein and Austria, what the Austrians call a 'Zoll' or 'Zollamt' at Schaanwald, the north-eastern line near the Austrian town of Feldkirch, on 8th February 1990, in Schaanwald, Austria.

  • A local delivery van full of gas cylinders struggles to round an uphill corner in central Lisbon, Portugal. The narrow streets, not designed for heavy traffic, still do not accommodate smaller vehicles. A tram waits for the obstructing truck to clear the tracks and rails and onlookers stop to see how the driver manages to get round without spilling its dangerous cargo.

  • The A30 highway runs deep into the South-West of England - from Exeter in the county of Devon to Penzance in the narrow peninsular of Cornwall. On certain dates in the calendar routes like this, near the Cornish town of Bodmin, England, come to a standstill from the huge volume of cars and private vehicles, all heading down to costal resorts and better weather. We see here a huge tailback of traffic that is queueing along one side of the British dual-carriageway (two lanes in each direction) from close-up to the distance down and up a natural hill in this undulating landscape. The cars have edged forward are nose to tail for hours in summer heatwave and tempers fray, children arguing in the back and an otherwise relaxed holiday mood suddenly goes bad.

  • During Rome's chaotic rush hour, we see a fleet of scooters being ridden towards the viewer. Apparently chased by other commuters' cards at this busy road juntion, the traffic comes towards us as it passes over the yellow stripes of a pedestrian crossing who are probably huddled on the pavement awaiting a halt in the traffic flow. In the foreground is a young man without a helmet whose hands grip the handlebars and whose face looks at us as he rides hard ahead of his contemporaries, also on two-wheeled vehicles.

  • A car owner attempts to shovel his way out of snow on a hill in South London. Bending down to remove the fallen snow from the road, he will again try to get a grip and friction of the slippery surface in order to make it up the gradient in Herne Hill. A van behind is already becoming impatient and is about to get past the stranded car and a passer-by looks on from the pavement, bemused. As the capital's infrastructure ground to a halt, with few trains and no buses for commuters to catch, walking and driving remained the only options.

  • A brave taxi cab driver drives gingerly along Denmark Hill in South London, The capital's infrastructure has largely come to a halt due to the large amounts of snowfall that has hit the capital - the most for 18 years. In addition to the lack of buses, trains were severely affected and roads like this have not been gritted by the local borough council, leaving motorists struggling to control their vehicles is the slippery conditions. The taxi's orange light is still illuminated indicating he is free for hire and a foot of snow is piled on his roof as the headlights pick out the driving blizzard conditions. Footprints are already in the drift near the pavement that is now hidden from the road.

  • Beneath the giant, solid pillars of the Bank of England in the heart of London's financial district - the ancient Square Mile - a man dressed in a traditional pinstripe suit has stopped to make a phone call or check for messages. Halting his journey along this street he has opted to stand in line with a traffic no waiting cone and also near double-yellow lines that restrict parking or stopping. Without the cone or lines this scene would otherwise be without colour - the columns of this financial institution and the pavement (sidewalk) are drab - so the welcome yellow gives this picture more interest. We only see the man from the rear view and so he remains anonymous, a small person set against the scale of a large-scale financial landscape..
