The posh lady in the front is in yellow and holds on to her straw hat on this windy summer day. Each wears their red Ascot badges allowing them entry to this exclusive royal event attended by the Royal Family and the hoi polloi of English society. • With a look of delight on her face, a four year-old girl stamps through fallen snow in a field near her home in Bielefeld, Germany. Wearing a vibrant red bobble hat and matching coat, she smiles towards the viewer with the pleasure of any child enjoying the excitement of fresh snow. Ski or sledge tracks can be seen at her feet but she is the only person in this empty landscape, as if she's walking on her own through the snowy hills. It is the winter of 1967 and the reds are very vibrant and dominant from the Kodachrome film used which also has a wonderful muted blue colour cast in the mid-tones giving the picture a chilly, wintry feel reminiscent of the classic days of early photography when shifts in color gave a faded and dated look.

Trays of food and two bottles of Champagne have been consumed during a break from betting and socialising. They are dressed in formal morning dress of top hat, waistcoat, tails with two of the men wearing red roses in their lapel button holes, all traditional and obligatory dress code in the Royal Enclosures which can be seen by visitors in the public car parks near the famous Berkshire race course. In the background we see a silver Rolls-Royce car and a lady sitting in its boot (trunk) also eating picnic food. The day is overcast, but despite this, they are in a joking and excitable mood. This northern seaside resort in the north-west of England is diverse in its transient holiday population whose behaviour can be routinely odd. • The massive IRA bomb in Bishopsgate Street in the heart of the City of London destroyed a substantial number of businesses and disrupted a major part of London's financial hub. In the days after the attack on 24th April 1993, we see the pictorial evacuation of smiling faces in a portrait of Pret a Manger staff, the sandwich and lunch chain (from the French 'Ready to Eat'). The image was hung above the premises and construction workers wearing hard hats transport the picture, like hundreds of other nearby businesses whose workers carried away company property, for temporary safe storage. This store was also badly damaged and had to be transferred to another location. The City of London has a resident population of under 10,000 but a daily working population of 311,000. It is a geographically-small City within Greater London, England. The City as it is known, is the historic core of London from which, along with Westminster, the modern conurbation grew. The City's boundaries have remained constant since the Middle Ages but it is now only a tiny part of Greater London. The City of London is a major financial centre, often referred to as just the City or as the Square Mile, as it is approximately one square mile (2.6 km) in area.

  • A 1997 cap is worn on the night of the Handover of sovereignty from Britain to China, on 30th June 1997, in Hong Kong, China. Midnight signified the end of British rule, and the transfer of legal and financial authority back to China. Hong Kong was once known as 'fragrant harbour' (or Heung Keung) because of the smell of transported sandal wood.

  • Five elderly women on-lookers are lined against a wall outside the famous Ascot race course on Ladies' Day, the annual event on the English sporting and social calendar in June. Each are standing in order of size, from tallest (who holds a Tesco supermarket bag) to smallest and watch as a man dressed in formal tails walks towards an entrance gate for the private members' enclosure. We see the two sides of the class system but it is a humerous scene. There is good nature between the two groups with smiles exchanged with one couple but discomfort from those behind.

  • Moving steadily 100 feet (8 metres) along a live-line electricity cable, a National Grid maintenance worker protected in a conductive cage, proceeds to the next 'separator' that holds the high-voltage cables from touching each other. From the ground we see the sagging cables stretching to a distant electricity pylon and two yellow cages, one large in the foreground where we see the human figure standing like an astonaut, and the other cage out of focus, a greater distance away but all dwarfed by the huge structure of girders and relays. Wearing clothing bonded to the conductor, the lineman can work comfortably inside the electrical field at close range with gloved hands. National Grid Electricity Transmission plc owns and operates the National Grid high-voltage electricity transmission network in England and Wales.National Grid plc is a United Kingdom based utilities company which also operates in other countries, principally in the United States. The company adopted its current name in July 2005 when shareholders agreed the change from National Grid Transco plc.

  • Two days after the Irish Republican Army (IRA) exploded a truck bomb on Bishopsgate, a main arterial road that travels north-south through London's financial area, City of London engineering officials examine the huge crater left by the terrorist device. We see debris around the hole with drainage and road material. It was said that Roman remains could be viewed at the bottom of the pit the bomb created. One person was killed when the one ton fertiliser bomb detonated directly outside the medieval St Ethelburga's church. Buildings up to 500 metres away were damaged, with one and a half million square feet (140,000 m²) of office space being affected and over 500 tonnes of glass broken. Costs of repairing the damage was estimated at £350 million. It was possibly the (IRA's) most successful military tactic since the start of the Troubles.

  • Reaching out to a tower of scaffolding, high above the skyline of North London, a member of a company of abseiling construction scaffold workers make use of circus skills. Suspended with ropes, carabinas and a seat harness normally used by mountaineers, this man is wearing a safety helmet and blue overalls and his dirty gloved hand is about to make contact with yellow iron work as his colleague looks skyward, already tethered to the reinforced structure. A 60s tower block is immediately behind and suburban houses and streets are below. We see a man about to make contact with a place of safety, reaching out to his destination while spread across London's skies. Lit by flash, this picture is confusing because the viewer sees a false sense of size and scale between the iron work and the flats behind.

  • Displayed on a table at the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin, a year after the fall of the Berlin Wall, peaked caps of the former East German (DDR in German) border police are on sale in orderly rows for the sake of tourists to this German city. The border troops of the German Democratic Republic (Grenztruppen), were a military force of the GDR and the primary force guarding the Berlin Wall and the border between East and West Germany. The Border Troops numbered at their peak approximately 47,000 troops and other than the Soviet Union, no other Warsaw Pact country had such a large border guard force. In all, 1,065 persons were killed along the GDR's frontiers and coastline, often by the border guards. The East Germany state existed from 7 October 1949 until 3 October 1990 and was a potent symbol of a divided Europe during the Cold War.
