  • Wearing a peaked cap and small rucksack, a young adventurer, scales a giant boulder in the ancient forest of Monbachtal Bach in Germany's Black Forest. Stretching to climb the rock, the lad of 10 uses his hand and walking stick to balance as he puts a boot higher to gain a sure footing. There is ample covering of moss and lichen on the primeval landscape making it hazardous to conquer but the boy has the stamina to get to the top and continue his walk through this beautiful wilderness. The boy is alone in the picture though accompanied by his family but he seems to mange on his own, capable of finding his own limits of endurance and confidence. Geologically, the Black Forest consists of a cover of sandstone on top of a core of gneiss. During the last glacial period, the Würm glaciation, the Black Forest was covered by glaciers.

  • A small boy shows a fascination for a huge tractor wheel at the Lambeth country fair in inner-city south London. Possibly never having seen a large machine such as this at close-quarters, the lad stares at the giant nuts that attach the wheel to the main frame. Perhaps he is captivated by its immensity and scale, so much larger than his toy vehicle at home in his toy box.

Amid the filthy walls of their tenement building home and of the grim, car less street beyond, two older children play in their doorway while younger friends peer from around a corner. It is horribly depressing and unhealthy place to grow up and these children are pale and yet seem happy, with smiles on their faces. The famous steel works can be seen st the end of the street. After the war, Stalin decided to build an ideological communist fantasy just outside Krakow: a model town and immense steelworks of the future. The steelworks was named after Lenin and the town would be called Nova Huta. At its peak, 27,000 people worked at the Lenin Steelworks. But Solidarity grew strong forcing strikes over pay and recognition over their union. Today, it is an economic and ecological disaster area. .

  • An elderly lady uses a 1970s model of Kodak Instamatic film camera whilst visiting an English country garden. With her eye pressed to the viewfinder, this amateur photographer is a pensioner on a day trip to the country and she takes a snapshot to record the beautiful view of flower beds and neatly-trimmed lawns. The Instamatic was a series of inexpensive, easy-to-load 126 and 110 cameras made by Kodak from 1963 and it was immensely successful, introducing a generation to low-cost photography and helping the growth of the contemporary photographic family album. More than 50 million Instamatic cameras were produced between 1963 and 1970. Kodak even gave away a considerable number in a joint promotion with Scott paper towels in the early 1970s in order to generate a large number of new photographers and stimulate lasting demand for its film business.

  • Facing a setting sun, the near-exhausted rowers of a small 'jolly boat' has almost completed the long Great River Race by pulling their oars along 22 miles of the River Thames. About to row past the battleship HMS Belfast on the right and under Tower Bridge beyond, the four friends negotiate the choppy waters of the capital's river. The Great River Race (also known as 'London's River Marathon') attracts both the true racer and the leisure rower. The course from Richmond to London docklands was inspired by the immense interest generated by a 1987 charity event in which the famous Doggett's Coat & Badge winners from The Company of Watermen & Lightermen rowed its shallop, or passenger barge, from Hampton Court to The Tower of London.
