Beaming from ear to ear, the lady relishes her time here in one of the remotest and most dangerous habitats on the planet. It will have been a life-changing experience for her and her new-found friends from all over the world who will have had to raise several thousands of sponsored Pounds for the privilege of spending two months away from a dull, comfortable life at home, rather than building community projects like bridges or schools. Raleigh International is a charity that provides adventurous and challenging expeditions for people from all backgrounds, nationalities and ages, especially young people. Over the last 23 years, 30,000 people have been involved in more than 250 expeditions to over 40 countries.

Surrounded by heavy-duty flight-spares, survival equipment boxes and a tyre for a Hawk jet aircraft, the Hercules looms large in the overcast sky. The team complete their winter training schedule in Cyprus. The Red Arrows pilots fly their own jet aircraft to air shows but when requiring the support of ground crew  they borrow a transporter to fly behind the main airborne squadron. 10 tons of spares and personal effects are shipped for a six-week stay.

Porlock is a coastal village and civil parish in Somerset, England, situated in a deep hollow below Exmoor, 5 miles (8 km) west of Minehead. The parish, which includes Hawkcombe and Doverhay, has a population of 1,440. The coastline includes shingle ridges, salt marshes and a submerged forest. In 1052 the Saxon king, Harold, landed at Porlock Bay from Ireland, and burnt the town before marching on London

  • A Hungarian man stands in an open phone booth to make a call using a landline in a Budapest street. The word Telefon is overhead and this cold-war era technology is in use in 1990. According to Thomas Edison, "Tivadar Puskas was the first person to suggest the idea of a telephone exchange". Puskás's idea finally became a reality in 1877 in Boston. It was then that the Hungarian word "hallom" "I hear you" was used for the first time in a telephone conversation when, on hearing the voice of the person at the other end of the line, Puskás shouted "hallom". This cannot be confirmed by any original documents, however it has passed into Hungarian modern folklore. Hallom was shortened to Hello.

Picking up the replica weapon, the boy takes aim along the barrel of the gun, pretending to shoot an unseen enemy. Wearing military clothing and a hat with union jack colours plus flag in a back pocket, he plays the soldier at a time of remembrance of those killed during wartime. In the week near the anniversary date of May 8, 1945, when the World War II Allies formally accepted the unconditional surrender of the armed forces of Germany and peace was announced to tumultuous crowds across European cities, the British still go out of their way to honour those sacrificed and the realisation that peace was once again achieved. Street parties now – as they did in 1945 – played a large part in the country’s patriotic well-being.

  • Visitors inspect the row of childrens' graves in the churchyard of St James, Cooling, Kent. Charles Dickens wrote about these graves in the opening of his famous novel Great Expectations. Dickens lived nearby in Higham and referred to this row of children's tombstones now inevitably referred to as Pip's graves. Dickens pictures them as '....five little stone lozenges each about a foot and a half long which were arranged in a neat row ... and were sacred to the memory of five little brothers of mine....' In fact the Cooling graves belong to the children of two families, aged between 1 month and about a year and a half, who died in the late 18th and 19th centuries.

Polo - from pulu in Hindi - referring to the wooden ball which was used, was adopted by the sport in its slow spread to the west.   • A gentleman dressed in a pin-stripe suit favoured by older workers in England, exhales the smoke from a fat cigar during a lunch-hour in Trinity Square in the City of London. The man is overweight and leads an unhealthy lifestyle, his chin overlapping his striped shirt. The cigar is held at the tips of two fingers and we can see in profile the billowing of a smoky cloud  from the man's lips. Government statistics suggest that in 2001, 27% of adults aged 16 and over smoked cigarettes in England; 28% of men and 25% of women. 66% of smokers in England wanted to give up smoking but more than 120,000 deaths were caused by smoking in the UK in 1995; that is, one in five of all deaths.

  • The massive IRA bomb in Bishopsgate Street in the heart of the City of London destroyed a substantial number of businesses and disrupted a major part of London's financial hub. In the days after the attack on 24th April 1993, we see the pictorial evacuation of smiling faces in a portrait of Pret a Manger staff, the sandwich and lunch chain (from the French 'Ready to Eat'). The image was hung above the premises and construction workers wearing hard hats transport the picture, like hundreds of other nearby businesses whose workers carried away company property, for temporary safe storage. This store was also badly damaged and had to be transferred to another location. The City of London has a resident population of under 10,000 but a daily working population of 311,000. It is a geographically-small City within Greater London, England. The City as it is known, is the historic core of London from which, along with Westminster, the modern conurbation grew. The City's boundaries have remained constant since the Middle Ages but  it is now only a tiny part of Greater London. The City of London is a major financial centre, often referred to as just the City or as the Square Mile, as it is approximately one square mile (2.6 km) in area.

  • With a look of delight on her face, a four year-old girl stamps through fallen snow in a field near her home in Bielefeld, Germany. Wearing a vibrant red bobble hat and matching coat, she smiles towards the viewer with the pleasure of any child enjoying the excitement of fresh snow. Seething is a former Royal Air Force station, assigned to the 448th Bombardment Group (Heavy) flying B-24 Liberators as part of the Eighth Air Force's strategic bombing campaign. The group enered combat on 22 December 1943, and until April 1945 served primarily as a strategic bombardment organization, hitting such targets as aircraft factories in Gotha, ball-bearing plants in Berlin, an airfield at Hanau, U-boat facilities at Kiel, a chemical plant at Ludwigshafen, synthetic oil refineries at Politz, aircraft engine plants at Rostock, marshalling yards at Cologne, and a Buzz-bomb assembly plant at Fallersleben. Some of these buildings are in a reasonable condition, although they are derelict and overgrown.

  • Travellers from across the West Country and beyond at the ancient annual Priddy Sheep (and horse) fair in Somerset, England. In a clash of garish pinks, a young woman wears a skin-tight dress with alongside relatives and a candy floss market stall in a field on the outskirts of the village, hoping to sell the vehicle. Set in the Mendip Hills, in the south-western English county of Somerset, the Priddy Sheep fair is host to an odd mix of farmers and travellers (commonly and incorrectly known as gypsies). In this field set aside purely for travellers, many with West Country accents but also with nearby Welsh and Irish too, deals are done with a traditional spit on the hand and a smacking of palms, selling a pony to another family. The Priddy Sheep Fair moved from the city of Wells in 1348 because of the Black Death.

Close to a million populate the mass fly-in over the week, a pilgrimage worshipping all aspects of flight. The event annually generates $85 million in revenue over a 25 mile radius from Oshkosh. The event is presented by the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA), a national/international organization based in Oshkosh. The airshow is seven days long and typically begins on the last Monday in July. The airport's control tower is the busiest control tower in the world during the gathering.

The Emirates Air Line (also known as the Thames cable car) is a cable car link across the River Thames in London built with sponsorship from the airline Emirates.   • During the morning rush-hour at Bank underground station in the heart of London's financial district, the grim face of 90s tube travel is seen here in a wide landscape of rounded tunnel and the curve of the station platform. A train guard watches for a green signal as Londoners are sandwiched inside the nearest carriage. Waiting for the doors to close and the hot air to seal them inside the small space, men and women press against each other in a claustrophobic journey along the Central Line. The Central line is a London Underground line, coloured red on the tube map. It is a deep-level "tube" line, running east-west across London, and, at 76 km (47 mi). Incorporated in 1891 it is today the longest Underground line and also the busiest with around 260 million passengers a year.

Each cool evening the tapper removes a thin layer of bark along a downward half spiral on the tree trunk. She makes an incision in the bark of the tree and fluid then drains into a collecting vessel. If done carefully and with skill, this tapping panel will yield latex for up to 5 years. Malaysia is one of the top exporters of natural rubber. Langkawi is an archipelago of 99 islands in the Andaman Sea, some 30 km off the mainland coast of northwestern Malaysia.

  • In front of an ad for Mercury, the 90s mobile phone network provider, a city worker uses his mobile phone in a London street.  Actor Harry Enfield was the face of the media campaign on tv and in print to help promote the young industry, still then an expensive accessory for the ordinary Briton. Mercury Communications, was a national telephone company in the United Kingdom, formed in 1981 as a subsidiary of Cable & Wireless to challenge the monopoly of British Telecom (BT). Mercury was the first competitor to BT, and although it proved only moderately successful at challenging their dominance, it was to set the path for new communication companies to attempt the same. In 1997, Mercury ceased to exist as a brand with its amalgamation into the operations of Cable & Wireless Communications and totally exited from the telecommunications business by 1999.

  • Four estate agent's property boards advertise their names and numbers in a London housing estate, each representing vendors selling their houses and flats for a set commission in the housing market. Above the signs is the pink blossom from a cherry tree whose branches hang over the temporary information boards. The term originally referred to a person responsible for managing a landed estate, while those engaged in the buying and selling of homes were "House Agents", and those selling land were "Land Agents". However, in the 20th century, "Estate Agent" started to be used as a generic term, perhaps because it was thought to sound more impressive. Estate agent is roughly synonymous in the United States with the term real estate broker.

Velika Planina is a mountain plateau in the Kamnik–Savinja Alps - a 5.8 square kilometres area 1,500 metres (4,900 feet) above sea level. Otherwise known as The Big Pasture Plateau, Velika Planina is a winter skiing destination and hiking route in summer. The herders' huts became popular in the early 1930s as holiday cabins (known as bajtarstvo) but these were were destroyed by the Germans during WW2 and rebuilt right afterwards by Vlasto Kopac in the summer of 1945.

It is a beautiful spring evening in this inner-city suburban district of Britain's capital, approximately 5 miles south from the River Thames. The elegant line of period homes were completed in 1908, the age of innovative building in the new 20th Century. The properties overlook the borough park named after John Ruskin, the renowned artist and commentator who lived in nearby Herne Hill. It looks an affluent area, a prosperous location to invest in a mortgage in uncertain times with market prices falling during the credit crunch and recession.
