  • Seen from behind as they stop at dotted give-way lines on this empty road junction, we see a strange perspective of deserted housing and empty roads, Jen West and her elderly wheelchair-bound mother Margaret - both residents of the experimental community village of Poundbury, Dorset, England. As if they are pedestrians about cross a busy highway, it is an incongruous scene of irony. Poundbury is the visionary model village that Charles, Prince of Wales sought to develop in 1993 as a successful and pioneering town near Dorchester, built on land owned by his own Duchy of Cornwall, challenging otherwise poor post-war trends in town planning and to some extent following the New Urbanism concept from the US except that the design influences are European.

  • We see two office workers silhouetted against the large orange wall of the Credit Lyonnais Bank, rushing to work through Broadgate in the City of London, UK. The figures are reduced to black shapes and without detail that may identify them or their clothes, are hurrying in different directions, one is a lady carrying a bag but the feeling of rushing business is seen and their scale is ambiguous because we don't know how close or far away they are from each other. The female therefore looks a giant and the man, tiny. Broadgate Estate is a large, 32 acre (129,000 m²) office and retail estate in the City of London, owned by British Land and managed by Broadgate Estates. It was originally built by Rosehaugh and was the largest office development in London until the arrival of Canary Wharf in the early 1990s..

  • Seen from an aerial walkway, we look down on a lady airline passenger being helped to pull her heavy suitacse from the carousel in the baggage reclaim hall in the arrivals of Heathrow Airport's Terminal 5. 50-70,000 pieces of British Airways baggage a day travel through 11 miles of conveyor belts which were installed in a 5-storey underground hall beneath the 400m (a quarter of a mile) length of Terminal 5. T5 alone has the capacity to serve around 30 million passengers a year and was completed in 2008 at a cost of £4.3bn. The system was designed by an integrated team from the airport operator BAA, BA and Vanderlande Industries of the Netherlands, and handles both intra-terminal and inter-terminal luggage. From writer Alain de Botton's book project "A Week at the Airport: A Heathrow Diary" (2009).

This long-established rustic Italian deli was opened by the Fratelli Camisi back in 1929, and this old Soho stalwart is well worth a visit if only for its fresh pasta and accompanying sauces - their pesto is particularly good - but that would be to miss out on the fabulous range of cheeses (pecorino, gorgonzola - both sweet and piccante - parmesan, mozzarella, ricotta), charcuterie (salamis, mortadella, parma ham), freshly marinated olives, vegetables (artichokes, peppers, aubergines, sun-dried tomatoes, mushrooms) under oil, risotto rices, balsamic vinegars, cakes and biscuits, as well as a range of their own-label products.

This northern seaside resort in the north-west of England is diverse in its transient holiday population whose behaviour can be routinely odd. The pier has intricate cast ironwork seat backs dating from 1863 and the man sits with ankles crossed, wearing a suit and trilby hat on a warm summer's day. In the background we see families - parents and children - playing and walking on the beach at low-tide - the golden sands a much-visited aspect of Blackpool, the largest resort in the north of England and visited traditionally by working people from industrial towns and cities during the industrial revolution.

The lady might be old and frail but her spirit is such that she still finds the time to integrate into community life and remains active despite her years. Walking beneath the wrought-iron sign in Cleeve Prior, Worcestershire, she edges under tentatively to make her way home wearing a quilted coat and her wedding ring on her gnarled hands. A chilly late-morning sun shines across the architecture of the building and this is the look of a lady happy with her morning's activities with fellow parishioners.

  • A grinning portrait of a fishmonger from the Princess Cafe on Foreshore Road in the North Yorkshire seaside town of Scarborough. Smiling with bad teeth but with a generous and kind face, the elderly man stands on the corner, outside his traditional seaside business in the centre of town where passing trade from locals and tourists guarantee him an income - a secure future towards his retirement in the coming years. In the background are signs advertising his produce: Haddock, Cod, and Lemon Sole - all locally caught and served with chips.

  • A portrait of Britain's first lady deacon, Christine Farrington at Salisbury Cathedral. Standing outside the grand architecture of this fine English structure. Deacon is a ministry in the Christian Church that is generally associated with service of some kind, but which varies among theological and denominational traditions. In many traditions the "diaconate", the term for a deacon's office, is a clerical office; in others it is for laity. The word "deacon" is derived from the Greek word diakonos, standard ancient Greek for "servant", "waiting-man", "minister" or "messenger". Salisbury Cathedral, formally known as the Cathedral Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary, is an Anglican cathedral in Salisbury, England, and is considered one of the leading examples of Early English architecture. The main body was completed in only 38 years, from 1220 to 1258.
