  • Prime Minster Margaret Thatcher is seen giving her last speech as Prime Minister at the October 1990 Conservative Party Conference in Blackpool, Lancashire before being removed by her own colleagues a few weeks afterwards. Her fighting spirit and stern expression gives her the reputation of Iron Lady with a gaze that make her opponents uncomfortable. She is wearing a favourite two-tone blue suit with wide shoulders and a pearl ear-rings. The ambient stage lights emphasize the blonde highlights in her hair.

  • 'Last Day' is written on a closed taylors business in London, a victim of the UK recession. Reduced prices and services are listed on the glass with a poster urging customers to grab a bargain. Around a recession-bled Britain, high-street businesses have been going bust in their thousands. Britain has now endured eight recessions since the Second World War. No two recessions are alike, and that applies to the current slowdown also. It has been caused by a shock to the availability of credit, a massive build up of debt. The number of people out of work currently stands at almost two million. Given the rate at which the economy is deteriorating this could easily be above three million. From a continuing piece of work about windows and urban messages, the picture is from the project of closed business windows: 'Bust - the Art of Recession'.

  • Seen through a junk shop window in north London, the large letters Last Day have been painted in white emulsion paint on the pane of glass. Between the letters are figures and bric-a-brac on sale in this budget store. A tiger model; a Jesus figure; a doll in a green dress. 'Last Day' is also ironic in a Biblical context as it was taken a few days after the Day of Resurrection and Easter.

  • The last person to leave the office is a conscientious lady employee of the biscuit and snack manufacturer United Biscuits at their UK headquarters at Hayes Park North near London England. Seen in a window surrounded bright ceiling lights, the female sits at her desk tying up loose ends before leaving for the day. As darkness falls outside, the red lights from tail lights streak across the picture and the green grass on a landscaped bank is lit by light posts. None of her work colleages have stayed on, preferring to depart to see their families at home on this winter night. Perhaps this career woman is single and an ambitious member of the team who can dedicate more time to her job..

From the top we see prizes for Reserve Champions then those for 1st prize, then second, third and runners-up at the very bottom. Such accolades are won and lost by fractions of a second but their importance is remembered for years afterwards as young girls desperately practice to improve their equestrian skills. A huge commitment is needed by the girls and their parents who spend great deals of money and time for these treasured prizes which can be won or lost by fractions of seconds or single points. Those that fail to win go home feeling empty-handed or perhaps cheated out of victory and glory. Those who win hang them on bedroom walls for years to come.

As the new head-quarters of the EU and an administrative home to the Members of European Parliament (MEPs), it is a contemporary architectural symbol of infuence and modernity. We see the man walking towards an open atrium. The viewer can see three floors though there are many more out of sight and on two of the levels there are TV screens with the stars denoting the number of member states at that time. • As traffic zooms past, the art installation called 'House' stands alone on a now-empty and house-less East London street. Oddly, the contours of the structure have been inverted to reveal an inside-out version of the original building. It is a concrete cast of the inside of an entire Victorian terraced house completed in autumn 1993 and exhibited at the location of the original property -- 193 Grove Road -- in East London (all the houses in the street had earlier been knocked down by the council). Created by the artist Rachel Whiteread CBE (born 1963) this is her best-known sculpture. It won her the Turner Prize (the first woman to do so) for best young British artist in 1993. Here we see 'House' next to a lamp post which throws down it's light on a winter evening, before it was controversially demolished by the council in January 1994.
