  • Looking down from a person's height, we see two Pitbull dogs standing quietly on a south London street pavement. The two animals seem docile but are attached to leads held by an unknown owner. AT the dogs' feet in a stencilled sign that Lambeth, the local council has left at many locations of its streets where dog owners neglect to collect their pets' mess. Their idea was to paint the words "Bag it. Bin it" to help educate this unhygienic practice. Britain's Dangerous Dogs Act bans the breeding and sale or exchange of four kinds of dog - pit bull terriers, Japanese Tosas, the Dogo Argentinos, and the Fila Brasileiros. Under the act, a dog classed as being "dangerously out of control in a public place" can be destroyed. The owner can be fined and imprisoned for up to six months. If a dog injures someone, the owner can be jailed for up to two years.

  • A young traveller tries out a Shetland pony at the ancient annual Priddy Sheep (and horse) fair in Somerset, England. In this field set aside purely for travellers, many with West Country accents but also with nearby Welsh and Irish too, deals are done with a traditional spit on the hand and a smacking of palms, selling a pony to another family. The Priddy Sheep Fair moved from the city of Wells in 1348 because of the Black Death.

The dog is healthy, lithe and obviously has great speed in those muscular legs, vastly different to the man, whose frame is heavy and slow.

  • Hopton's Alms Houses, London SE1. Hopton's Almshouses were built in 1752 by trustees appointed under the will of Charles Hopton. 26 poor persons were chosen to occupy the houses. Almsmen were allowed to marry but the original rules were framed to prevent children of the almsmen becoming chargeable to Christ Church parish. Each almsman was to receive a chaldron of coals and a payment of not less than £6 a year. The almshouses consist of a continuous range of two-storey cottages on three sides of the central lawn with trees and paved paths.

  • Prices at the pumps in the Jet petrol station, Europe's first completely unleaded forecourt in London in 2001. The detailed picture shows us the amounts we paid for fuel in the early part of the 21st century when the UK's economy was still very prosperous, before the crashes and recessions of the following decade. This forecourt was the first to offer exclusively Unleaded petrol which wasn't then available across the country. Drivers were forced to journey to specially-converted stations far apart. On this day, it cost 36.8p a litre whereas 13 years later it would cost roughly £1 more for the same amount.

  • A young couple demonstrate their rock 'n' roll dancing skills in front of a crowd in Myatts Fields park in Camberwell, South London UK. Spinning his partner on the specially-laid flooring, the gentleman is dressed in a double-breasted suit in keeping with the 1950s theme of this fair's celebration of a newly-refurbished park. The lady wears a red dress and holds her arm out to regain balance as she is pulled back towards her dance partner. The seated crowd watch attentively beneath London Plain trees whose foliage gives welcome shade on a warm summer afternoon.
