  • Looking upwards through a gap in some trees, we see in the background the huge skyscraper office tower of the Commerzbank (Europe's tallest building (1997-2005), designed by Sir Norman Foster) and other institutions in the financial district of Frankfurt, Germany. In the foreground is a set of traffic lights with a traffic lane arrow direction sign and during the long time-exposure the red, amber and green lights have registered on the film to say stop, ready, go. There is a light mist settling on the cityscape which can be seen around the intense of the street lighting giving the scene a futuristic atmosphere like the Blade Runner movie. Apart from the prime colours (colors) emitted by the traffic lights, the image has an otherwise green hue including the tree foliage which is illuminated by the artificial lamps. The leaves are also blurring because of a faint breeze which registers during a long time-exposure.

  • The last person to leave the office is a conscientious lady employee of the biscuit and snack manufacturer United Biscuits at their UK headquarters at Hayes Park North near London England. Seen in a window surrounded bright ceiling lights, the female sits at her desk tying up loose ends before leaving for the day. As darkness falls outside, the red lights from tail lights streak across the picture and the green grass on a landscaped bank is lit by light posts. None of her work colleages have stayed on, preferring to depart to see their families at home on this winter night. Perhaps this career woman is single and an ambitious member of the team who can dedicate more time to her job..

  • A Christian crucifix stands encased in a wooden box that has been attached to a panelled wall in Quebec, Canada. The image is white except for the Jesus icon itself and coloured lights which glow on this dark afternoon in the depths of Winter. The religious shrine consists of the human effigy standing a plinth next to faded dried flowers. On the left side are six wheel hubs also fixed to a wire fence that borders this person's property. Their decorative design suggests the Canadian owner likes driving sports or utility vehicles but who is also a worshipper of the Christian faith and believer in idols. Canada's 2001 Census showed, 72% of the Canadian population listed Roman Catholicism or Protestantism as their religion. The Roman Catholic Church in Canada is by far the country's largest single denomination.

The words Dim Sum Daily are displayed in neon lights above the person's head, its translated message is written on the top in Chinese characters. In the clear window we can see rows of Peking duck. It is early evening and the street is full of colour from the artificial lighting that creates an inviting mood for those browsing the menus on offer in this lively part of London's West End. The pedestrian is partly silhouetted and she stands in profile looking straight ahead as if ignoring what is on offer.

  • Moving fast past a farmhouse building on a busy UK A road, unseen traffic leaves its light trails on an otherwise dark winter night near the giant DIRFT warehouse logistics park in Daventry, Northamptonshire England. Some rooms are lit in this remote residence which show signs of occupation. Red tail lights from cars, lorries and trucks streak by with tall traces of container traffic leaves light on the picture, diagonally leaving their mark. It is a very busy highway on which to own a home but this infrastructure is a vital route that keeps Britain's logistics moving across the country 24/7.

  • It is night-time on Blackpool's Golden Mile, the seaside resort in Lancashire, England. Like an English Las Vegas the neon lights glow to entice the holidaymaker inside where slot machines, games and rides await visitors to lose their vacation money. The Golden Mile is the name given to the stretch of Promenade between the North and South piers. It emerged in the late 19th Century, when small-time fairground operators, fortune-tellers, phrenologists and oyster bars set up in the front gardens of boarding houses, This northern seaside resort in the north-west of England is diverse in its transient holiday population whose behaviour can be routinely odd. Blackpool is the largest resort in the north of England and visited traditionally by working people from industrial towns and cities during the industrial revolution.

Holding a lit cigarette in her left hand and with an unused ashtray to her right, she is chatting with friends who are also enjoying a relaxing hour after work. Under the UK Government's recent laws on smoking in public places, the work mates are forced outside the pub to smoke on the street in a special area away from the anti-smoking people indoors. Lit by glowing red lights that also provide warmth on this chilly January night, the friends are comfortable in their own company.

  • Just after heavy rain when the streets of London's West End are wet but brightening after the clouds have passed we look into the windows of a black taxi cab on the busy Charing Cross Road. It is a scene of urban transport and inclement weather. We can see the rough form of the taxi driver at the front of his vehicle but it appears that he is stationary, possibly awaiting for the return of his fare-paying passenger from nearby bookshops such as Foyles in the background. A No-Smoking sticker is on the window and advertising on the side panel shows the arms of an airline passenger sitting in an airliner seat but once the taxi passenger returns, their head will be directly above this. The car's roof is still wet from rain, glistening in the artificial street lights that have turned on during the dark rain storm.

  • From a slightly raised viewpoint we are looking up Bishopsgate Street in the oldest area of Britain's capital, the Square Mile in the City of London. As traffic is at a standstill when lights are red, pedestrians to and fro across the scene, blurring as they negotiate crossings and traffic islands mid-way across this old Roman and medieval highway that travels north-south in what is now the city's financial district. Buses can be seen in the far distance too adding to the general bustle of a busy metropolis. The highway tends to zigzag into the distance and with the foreshortening of a long lens, appears to have a compressed perspective.

  • Seen through the window of an amusement arcade in London's Gerrard Street, Chinatown, we see the colourful neon lights that garishly shine from behind the glass. Beyond is the hustle and bustle of daily life in this famous street of London's Chinese community. We are slightly confused as to what is inside and what is out. We see the Georgian architecture reflected from behind and to the left is a slot-machine game called Hi-Roller which suggests the use of dice in this gambling activity. Passers-by can be seen outside, making their way past the many restaurants and businesses. In the middle of the scene is a yellow sign positioned by the Metropolitan Police warning against pickpockets as this area of the West End is known for petty crime.

Ghostly, blurred Palm trees sway about in the coastal breeze against the fading sky of early evening. This is a vibrant district of tropical Miami, Florida. The place to hang-out and be noticed. The choristers are dressed in white shirts which are untidily untucked from their dark trousers (pants). Their heads echo the purple, yellow and red spots from the overhead lights. The front of stage is covered by a curved ribbed roof structure that arches over the mens' heads. The singers look small in scale to the cavernous height of this ceiling, occupying a small percentage of the frame. We cannot see the choir's conductor, nor their audience but we get an impression of wide area in which to project their voices

Seen from a low angle, we see the graphic cruciform shape of the aircraft as it screams past two powerful airfield landing lights that help guide arriving aircraft to the runway. The backlit scene is largely monochrome apart from the boys red t-shirt and yellow-faced watch which are lit by flash, underexposing the overcast sky. Prior to 9/11, British airport authorities and police tolerated plane spotters near runway fences but with heightened terrorist alerts, these enthusiasts are told to move on or face arrest. • Peering through the steamy window of a Chinese restaurant in London's Chinatown district, we see the shapes and forms of kitchen staff and customers in this lively scene. In the window are rows of Peking Duck with their skins cooked a crispy dark brown. Meanwhile, surrounded by cooking utensils and implements, the tools of their trade, two chefs busy themselves in the kitchen area, one's face shows him to be ethnic Chinese who is rubbing his hands in a cloth before continuing his chores. Two European girls are waiting expectantly for their dishes to arrive. Obscured by the steam and heat, a waiter in green bustles about this small eaterie.
