Wearing smart uniforms, French immigration police and Gendarmes sit among British customs and immigration officials who, rather comically wear yellow hard hats because Health and Safety laws make the wearing of protective headgear compulsory on construction sites. A frontier control point notice stands for the benefit of viewers who might otherwise be guessing what is going on.

  • An engineer working underground during construction of the Heathrow Express train project on behalf of Heathrow airport operator BAA (British Airport Authority), London England. While standing erect, he twists a high-tension tool that secures the concrete sleepers to the steel rails using a Pandrol Clip. The tunnel snakes its way into the distance behind him, lit by temporary lighting on the 5-mile tunnel wall. Its sections are reinforced concrete, shaped for the Heathrow Express electric Siemens-built trains that provide a direct link between Heathrow's terminals and Paddington station in central London. This is now the most expensive rail-mile fare in the UK at £15.50 for a 15-minute journey. In 1994 one tunnel collapsed without warning in one of the most catastrophic civil engineering disasters in British history.

  • The £18.2m Millennium Bridge (a Thames crossing linking the City of London at St. Paul's Cathedral with the Tate Modern Gallery at Bankside) was London's newest river crossing for 100-plus years and coincided with the Millennium, it was hurriedly finished and opened to the public on 10 June 2000 when an estimated 100,000 people crossed it to discover the structure oscillated so much that it was forced to close 2 days later. Over the next 18 months designers added dampeners to stop its wobble but it already symbolised what was embarrassing and failing in British pride. Now the British Standard code of bridge loading has been updated to cover the swaying phenomenon, referred to as Synchronous Lateral Excitation. Here a surveyor stands with legs spread peering into a tripod-mounted theodolite to measure its 370 metres (1,214 ft) steel length.

A workman walks over part of the structure that will in the future, take the Eurostar and Shuttle trains through this portal underneath the town of Folkestone and on beneath the English Channel to the French coast. The technique is known as cut and cover. Eleven tunnel boring machines cut through chalk marl to construct two rail tunnels and a service tunnel. Tunnelling commenced in 1988, and the tunnel began operating in 1994. In 1985 prices, the total construction cost was £4.650 billion (equivalent to £11 billion today), an 80% cost overrun. At the peak of construction 15,000 people were employed with daily expenditure over £3 million. Ten workers were killed during construction between 1987 and 1993, most in the first few months of boring.

Heavy snow has fallen in this region of the Alps and deposits have settled on the fences and the glowing red stop traffic light, signalling for motorists to halt at this dangerous road-crossing location. So fast is this mode of transport, it blurs past this cold, desolate spot where only one nearby house is next to the trackside.   • Seen from a low angle at the side of the track, near where grass and daisies grow, a speeding Eurostar TGV train hurtles towards the viewer, blurring as it comes towards us. This is the Kent countryside, otherwise known as the fertile Garden of England, and the route for high-speed trains that ply back and forth between western Europe and London St Pancras. This international passenger service was made possible by the completion of the Channel Tunnel in 1994 operating eighteen-carriage Class 373 trains which run at up to 300 kilometres per hour (186 mph) on a network of high-speed lines. Eurostar is operated by the national railway companies of France and Belguim, SNCF and SNCB, and by Eurostar (UK) Ltd (EUKL), a subsidiary of London and Continental Railways (LCR) which in turn also owns the high-speed infrastructure and stations on the British side.

  • As darkness approaches, a queue of campervans and other vehicles queue up at the first checkpoint in the Port of Dover's Eastern Docks, the holidaymakers' first step to travelling across the English Channel to France or Belgium. beneath the famous white cliffs of Dover, that symbol of England's edge that is seen from the sea as one leaves or approaches the English shores. It is dusk and the flood lights have started illuminating the busy port roads and ramps, the red rear tail lights from a truck cross the picture's foreground and the signs - with graphics of busses, cars  and arrows that tell drivers in which lane to line-up glow yellow. Dover has long been one of the World's premier seaports, with centuries of maritime heritage, presented with a Royal Charter in 1606.

An arc of these neon-lit codes form an arch on a panel near one of the 1,500 semi mature trees.   • Peering through a hole in the huge metal door of an old Victorian tunnel, two children stand on the place where a railway once emerged from this brick entrance - a link between nearby Dulwich and the Crystal Palace. Now the London Wildlife Trust maintains this once-wild wood at Sydenham, South London, England, which has reverted to forest again, 40 years after (one of the first the electrified railways) line fell silent. The brother and sister look through to see if there is light at the end of this tunnel but it has long been bricked up, sealed to deter vandals and danger to all. It is Autumn and the leaves on the beech and oak trees are about to fall, adding to the already organic deep forest floor. Its site, downstream of the equally remarkable Ponte Vecchio,[2] is a major link in the medieval street plan of Florence, which has been bridged at this site since the thirteenth century. The bridge was destroyed in 1944 by retreating German troops but reconstructed in 1958 with original stones raised from the Arno or taken from the same quarry, under the direction of the architect Riccardo Gizdulich and the engineer Emilio Brizzi.

Thomas Guy (1644 – 1724) was British bookseller, speculator and founder of Guy's Hospital, London whose links to the global slave trade is now a controversial aspect of this businessman by anti-slavery activists and more recently, Black Lives Matter protesters. His wealth came through shares in the South Sea Company whose main business was in the selling of slaves from Africa to the Spanish colonies. In 1720 he successfully sold his stock of the company for approx £400 million (at today's prices) and amassed a large fortune, opening the Guy's Hospital  in 1725 which today serves as one of  the capital's major NHS healthcare centres. In the aftermath of the George Floyd protests in the US and UK Black Lives Matter groups who are calling for the removal of statues and street names with links to the slave trade, Guy's and other statues of British slavery owners and profiteers, have become a focus of impassioned protest.
