The window is in Victoria, the area of central London close to the mainline station and has been distempered with a mixture of white emulsion paint and water which prevents outsiders from peering inside, where stock may still be stored. His mother and younger and older sister are also to the far right of the picture so he may go with his elder sibling carrying a multi-coloured umbrella and a bright blue briefcase containing his lunch and a few items needed for lessons. Surrounded by adult commuters, some of who look on with mild amusement, also make await their train from the city out of town. Mostly, people mind their own business and what is a special day for the boy will become a much-travelled route.

  • Seen through the window of Coates Wine Bar which contains small square patterns of frosted glass, the arched structure of Broadgate offices in the City of London, appears beyond. Trees whose leaves are turning into autumnal colour can also be seen blending into the landscape. Broadgate is a vast estate of office buildings developed in the Thatcher years, sitting astride the redeveloped Liverpool Street mainline station. We see the classic architectural feature that gives strength to large buildings - the load-bearing arch.

  • Commuters to-and-fro in the heat of a city summer during a 3-day underground tube strike in September 2007. This is Victoria mainline station during a summer heatwave. It's a transport hub for tube lines, buses and overground train routes and we see masses of pedestrians and buses reflected in the glass of a bush shelter window. As a result of the industrial action, the buses are full so the quickest way of reaching one's destination is to walk. An official points out directions, someone shields his eyes from the sun, a lady walks with her hands in pockets, the 239 bus to Victoria approaches and sightseeing tours sign advertises tickets. People are seen in differing scales and sizes.

  • A young child is allowed by an unseen parent to play unknowingly on the memorial for Jewish Kinder Transportees at Liverpool Street mainline Station in the City of London. The Kindertransport is a rescue mission that took place during the nine months prior to the outbreak of the Second World War. The United Kingdom took in nearly 10,000 predominantly Jewish children from Nazi Germany, Austria, Czechoslovakia, Poland, and the Free City of Danzig. The children were placed in British foster homes, hostels, schools and farms. Often they were the only members of their families who survived the Holocaust.

  • A wide dusk landscape of the development in the City of London, known as Broadgate is a vast estate of corporate buildings developed in the Thatcher years, sitting astride the redeveloped Liverpool Street mainline station. Broadgate is a large, 32-acre (13 ha) office and retail estate in the City of London, owned by British Land and the Blackstone Group and managed by Broadgate Estates. The original developer was Rosehaugh: it was built by a Bovis / Tarmac Construction joint venture and was the largest office development in London until the arrival of Canary Wharf in the early 1990s. The modern and mainly-pedestrianised development is located on the original site of Broad Street station (closed in 1986) and beside and above the railway approaches into Liverpool Street station.

  • A group of attractive young ladies sit together in a train compartment. They are all on their way from London's Waterloo mainline station to Royal Ascot in Berkshire for Ladies Day during the Royal Ascot racing week. Wearing their best clobber and obligatory headwear for the posh event, the seated females are dressed in summer skirts and tops, in readiness for a warm day at the races. Sharing a joke and with plastic glasses filled with champagne from a bottle that one has been serving from, the 7 women are in good spirits in their private first class compartment that has a number 1 on the outside door. Royal Ascot is held every June and is one of the main dates on the sporting calendar and social season.

  • The zoomed lights of Macau's Hotel Lisboa Casino. Macau's biggest attraction is its gaming business, especially after this colony reverted from Portuguese to Chinese rule and mainline Chinese flocked here. Its gambling revenue in 2006 weighed in at a massive £3.6bn - about £100m more than Las Vegas. Though many forms of gambling are legal here, the most popular game in the casinos is baccarat, which generates over two thirds of the gaming industry's gross receipts. The official languages are Portuguese and Chinese and the Macau Special Administrative Region, more commonly known as Macau (Macao) is one of the two special administrative regions (SARs) of the People's Republic of China (PRC), along with Hong Kong.

  • The Rt. Hon. Tony Blair MP, as Leader of the Opposition, stares in deep thought whilst on a train en-route to an evening Labour Party rally in Nottingham, 2 years before his victory in the 1997 General Election that eventually made him British Prime Minister. Blair is with an unknown Downing Street assistant and is has been reading the London Evening Standard newspaper in the First Class carriage at a time when fellow-passengers take little notice of the future controversial world statesman. Then, he could travel in relative obscurity, without large security details. Blair is wearing a blue shirt with a sober, patterned tie and his hair is still dark without the greyness that would appear rapidly when the pressures of office prematurely aged him. It is dark outside and we see no detail through the window of the vast Victorian mainline station outside.
