  • Listening intently to a speech given by the Rt. Hon. Kenneth Clarke MP, the then-Chancellor in John Major's Conservative government of 1994, these city and financial dignitaries have feasted well in the old Guildhall, the City of London's town hall - the Guildhall - in the historic financial district of the capital. Wearing formal banquet attire, these chiefs of industry appear to be an all-male audience though there were also women sat at tables during the Banker's Dinner held every in June when the Chancellor of the Exchequer delivers a speech known as the Mansion House Speech hosted by the Lord Mayor, which takes its name from his official residence nearby. They concentrate on the speech to hear the Chancellor's predictions for growth and prosperity.

  • Female vet, Diana Stapleton is ecstatically happy after successfully delivering twin calves to Fresian cow at Manor House Farm, Barnoldswick near Settle, North Yorkshire, England. With the two youngsters spread on the soft straw of the barn, and their mother facing the corner of the outhouse with the resulting afterbirth still attached, Diana makes her sense of achievement clear to the farmer who must also be relived about the positive outcome. The survival of twin cattle births depends on thorough training and an instinct for animal husbandry and medical requirements. Diana Stapleton belonged to the Dalehead Veterinary Group based in nearby Settle for 15 years, covering a 20-mile area of 500 remote farms though she specialised in small animals and farmwork before dying suddenly at the age of 39.

In the context of the News International media scandals of 2011, the (daily) Sun is a sister paper to the now defunct (Sunday) News of The World, closed down by proprietor Rupert Murdoch in the light of public outrage over phone hacking. Murdoch's overall message was the committee grilling was his most humble day.

  • A large, manly woman sips a pint of lager during a darts tournament where she competes in an England Open tournament at the Bunn Leisure Holiday Park in Selsey, near Chichester on the south coast of England. Holding three darts with a Union Jack flags on the 'flights', her glass covers her face but we see her rings and bracelet and her ample belly after a life of beer and cigarettes in pubs like this. A great deal of alcohol (mostly lager, but also Coke) is consumed during darts tournaments although smoking in public places has now been banned in the UK, including pubs and bars. This audience seemed to consist largely of very large lesbian women from working families which seems to suggest that the pub (and alcohol) is still the place where women are attracted to the game of darts. ..

  • A rather rotund man wearing a flat cap, a checked shirt under braces that keep his ample trousers up above his fat tummy, affectionately tickled his pet dog, a Whippet ,who stands still with two paws on his master's large leg. It is a bright day on the beach at Great Yarmouth in Norfolk, England. Bathers are running on the sand in the background and the man and his dog are content to watch the world go by from their promenade bench. Their is a great deal of trust and love these two have for each other - the gentleman having brought his dog on holiday to the seaside with him, rather than leave him with friends or in kennels. The dog is healthy, lithe and obviously has great speed in those muscular legs, vastly different to the man, whose frame is heavy and slow.

  • The solitary figure of a man stands on the roof of an office building in downtown Atlanta during a victory parade for the city's baseball team. The man may be a security guard, keeping watch over the streets below as crowds gather to honour the Atlanta Braves Baseball team, after their 1995 World Series win. The figure is in his manmade environment and the high walls and windows of the buildings that make up this metropolis dwarf this tiny human who in the scale and perspective of a modern city looks incongruous, isolated and insignificant.

  • A local man carries tourism industry supplies downhill on the Annapurna Sanctuary trekking route in central Nepal. With the heavy load on his back, supported in the traditional Himalayan manner of a head strap that steadies the pack, the man makes his steady way down the foothill using a long pole for extra balance. Communities here partly-depend on the agriculture of rice-growing but also on the passing tourist trade. Western trekkers from all over the world walk through these tiny communities on their way up the series of climbing trails of the Annapurna Conservation Sanctuary circuit, a sometimes rigorous walk from the low hills of Pokhara to the higher altitudes of Annapurna, the (26,000 feet (8,000 metre) peak. To be greeted by so much choice is the most rewarding experience and the offer of hot showers is about the best reward for so much exertion.

  • Scale model of world's tallest man Robert Pershing Wadlow in London street with similar-looking man eating junk food...Robert Pershing Wadlow (February 22, 1918 - July 15, 1940) is the tallest person in history. He reached 8 ft 11.1 in (2.72 m)[2][3] in height and weighed 485 lb (220 kg) at his death at age 22. His great size and his continued growth in adulthood was due to hypertrophy of his pituitary gland which results in an abnormally high level of human growth hormone. He showed no indication of an end to his growth even at the time of his death.

  • Sitting drunk on a mid-town sidewalk (pavement), a construction worker wipes tears from his eyes. The man has driven from his mid-west home to offer help at the hazardous Ground Zero where for the past 4 days and nights he has been uncovering debris and human remains after the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center. Exhausted and emotional, he was sent away for his own and the safety of others and alcohol was his first purchase. New Yorkers praised their heroes for assisting their city (and America) in their hour of need but here, passers-by stepped over him complaining of his drunken state. The now lonely man is distressed, tormented and psychologically fragile but gets no help. With his few possessions, his hard hat and flag, mask and cans of Budweiser we see a man at his lowest ebb.

In the 100th year after WW1 started, the war memorial heroes in Cornhill, City of London remembering those killed in the First World War, lost in the trenches and the fields of Flanders from 1914-19. Dedicated by the City of London, the UK capital's financial and historic heart. Two soldiers face away from each other with rifles between their boots, they represent a lost generation when the nation's youth sacrificed their lives in the 20th century's first great conflict. The inscription says that their names will live for evermore.

He sits with an outdoor party behind him in full swing that celebrates the 50th anniversary of VE (Victory in Europe) Day on 6th May 1995. In the week near the anniversary date of May 8, 1945, when the World War II Allies formally accepted the unconditional surrender of the armed forces of Germany and peace was announced to tumultuous crowds across European cities, the British still go out of their way to honour those sacrificed and the realisation that peace was once again achieved. Street parties now – as they did in 1945 – played a large part in the country’s patriotic well-being.

  • A middle-aged man walks beneath the sign of the London Stock Exchange at their old premises known as the Tower. The gent looks hunched as if with all the troubles of the world on his shoulders, a pessimistic view on the world. He makes a sorrowful figure with such a strong presence against the wall shadow. Three years after the so-called Big Bang in 1986, this location at the old Stock Exchange Tower became redundant with the advent of the Big Bang, which deregulated many of the Stock Exchange's activities as it enabled an increased use of computerised systems that allowed dealing rooms to take precedence over face to face trading. Thus, in 2004, the House moved to a brand new headquarters in Paternoster Square, close to St Paul's Cathedral.

  • Having just unearthed more bodies from layers of volcanic ash and pumice, an archaeologist's assistant pauses for a cigarette, kneeling beside a victim of the AD79 eruption of Mount Versuvius over the ancient Roman town of Pompeii. Buried beneath huge amounts of toxic material this person was suffocated and crushed from falling debris. Preserved in a shell of volcanic material it is to be removed from this site on top of a villa roof where, it is calculated, this citizen was one of the last to die, having climbed 4 metres above ground level to await its fate. The Italian man ears a red t-shirt and holds a pick that has scraped and brushed away the soil to reveal the human form which also shows another body beneath. Others litter the rooftop too proving that many survivors of the first eruption perished after the second many hours later.

  • Airline passengers recently arrived from India wait in line at Heathrow Airport's Terminal 5 transit concourse. The middle-aged travellers queue patiently after their long-haul flight and two believe that masks will protect themselves from airborne diseases and infections, not wishing to be exposed to Swine Flu or perhaps SARS, in a hectic public place where such bacteria can be transmitted from one human being to another. But a lady at the front of the queue has lowered her mask while the man at the back keeps his covering the mouth and nose.
