  • Squadron Leader John Green the executive officer of the elite 'Red Arrows', Britain's prestigious Royal Air Force aerobatic team, instructs a group of RAF fighter pilots in the art of manual close-formation aerobatic flying. Explaining how to line up their aircraft with their nearest neighbour using a system called 'referencing', he shows them with his fingers the margin of error that is tolerated when only 12ft (3-4m) apart and flying at 400mph (650kph).  The recruits all hope to be selected for next year's team and have travelled to RAF Akrotiri in Cyprus where the Red Arrows complete their pre-season training. Seen from beneath the Hawk jet aircraft's nose on the 'line' Squadron Leader Green kneels by the trailing wing edge to demonstrate what he will expect from their upcoming flying test.

  • The £18.2m Millennium Bridge (a Thames crossing linking the City of London at St. Paul's Cathedral with the Tate Modern Gallery at Bankside) was London's newest river crossing for 100-plus years and coincided with the Millennium, it was hurriedly finished and opened to the public on 10 June 2000 when an estimated 100,000 people crossed it to discover the structure oscillated so much that it was forced to close 2 days later. Over the next 18 months designers added dampeners to stop its wobble but it already symbolised what was embarrassing and failing in British pride. Now the British Standard code of bridge loading has been updated to cover the swaying phenomenon, referred to as Synchronous Lateral Excitation. Here a surveyor stands with legs spread peering into a tripod-mounted theodolite to measure its 370 metres (1,214 ft) steel length.

  • In a sterile clean room, one module section of the European Space Agency's Automated Transfer Vehicle (ATV) called Jules Verne, is under construction by technicians of an integration team at Europe's Spaceport in Kourou, French Guiana. The ATV cargo carrier is the world's largest and most complex orbiting spacecraft and is a new series of autonomous spaceships designed to re-supply the International Space Station with replacement cargo, propellant, water and oxygen to the orbital outpost. Launched in March 2008 and self-destructed with waste during its return to earth's atmosphere that September, it delivered 4.6 tonnes of payload to the ISS, including 1,150 kg of dry cargo, 856 kg of propellant for the Russian Zvezda module, 270 kg of drinking water and 21 kg of oxygen.
