  • The British Union Jack Flag flies in a stiff breeze, its colours of red-white and blue almost wholly horizontal as the wind tears through the blue skies and beneath wispy cirrus clouds, in Eastbourne, West Sussex, England UK. Tied to its flag-pole, this symbol of patriotic nationalism, evokes a sense of pride and spirit the British are known for - having encouraged them through two world wars and more recently, other military campaigns. The colours (colors) of Scotland's blue and white crosses and the English cross of St. George are merged to make this well-known symbol of the British Isles.

  • A rather rotund man wearing a flat cap, a checked shirt under braces that keep his ample trousers up above his fat tummy, affectionately tickled his pet dog, a Whippet ,who stands still with two paws on his master's large leg. It is a bright day on the beach at Great Yarmouth in Norfolk, England. Bathers are running on the sand in the background and the man and his dog are content to watch the world go by from their promenade bench. Their is a great deal of trust and love these two have for each other - the gentleman having brought his dog on holiday to the seaside with him, rather than leave him with friends or in kennels. The dog is healthy, lithe and obviously has great speed in those muscular legs, vastly different to the man, whose frame is heavy and slow.

  • A portrait of a local butcher in the Essex seaside town of Frinton-on-Sea. A butcher is an ancient trade, whose duties may date back to the domestication of livestock, butchers formed guilds in England as far back as 1272. • A middle-aged man, possibly in his late-fifties, holds the lead of his pet dog on a park bench in London England. Afternoon sun filters through nearby trees and the man is wearing a simple, plain white shirt. He sits crossed-legs on this warm afternoon gazing to a point in the distance looking lonely and hopeful of meeting someone else, or maybe of events in a long life. His dog is the man's best friend and companion and he guards him with a strong hand as a master should.

  • Sitting among others in long grass a middle-class lady reads the high-circulation Daily Mail newspaper during a lunchtime break at the Chelsea Flower Show, in London England. The front page headline reads 'Icy Blast from the Kremlin' in an echo from the darkest days of the Cold War, when western media fuelled the insatiable appetite for propaganda. But this scene is from May 1989 before the fall of the Berlin Wall and when the eastern states of the Warsaw Pact were still ruled by their Communist masters. Visitors to this annual horticultural event either sit in the cool shade or like this woman who appears comfortable cross-legged in sandals and a summer dress, stays under the hot mid-day sun with her tabloid format paper spread and with her possessions kept in a shoulder bag.

Buffing up their bearskin hats and brushing away any specks of dust from shoulders, they each help the other appear as near-perfect as they can before parading in front of thousands during the Changing of the Guard or at other times, during tropping of the Colour on the Queen's birthday occasion. Formed in 1915 by order of King George V, have fought in every war since but are housed at the Wellington Barracks purely for ceremonial reasons, also serving on active duty in the world's trouble spots, where their professionalism is demanded by their British Ministry of Defence masters.

  • The pieces of two games of chess await players as a crowd on onlookers crowd above to see the lunchtime tournament at the Broadgate office plaza in the City of London. The first modern chess tournament was organized by Howard Staunton, a leading English chess player, and was held in London in 1851. It was won by the relatively unknown German Adolf Anderssen, who was hailed as the leading chess master, and his brilliant, energetic attacking style became typical for the time, although it was later regarded as strategically shallow. Broadgate is a large, 32-acre (13 ha) office and retail estate in the City of London, owned by British Land and the Blackstone Group and managed by Broadgate Estates.
