  • Moving steadily 100 feet (8 metres) along a live-line electricity cable, a National Grid maintenance worker protected in a conductive cage, proceeds to the next 'separator' that holds the high-voltage cables from touching each other. From the ground we see the sagging cables stretching to a distant electricity pylon and two yellow cages, one large in the foreground where we see the human figure standing like an astonaut, and the other cage out of focus, a greater distance away but all dwarfed by the huge structure of girders and relays. Wearing clothing bonded to the conductor, the lineman can work comfortably inside the electrical field at close range with gloved hands. National Grid Electricity Transmission plc owns and operates the National Grid high-voltage electricity transmission network in England and Wales.National Grid plc is a United Kingdom based utilities company which also operates in other countries, principally in the United States. The company adopted its current name in July 2005 when shareholders agreed the change from National Grid Transco plc.

  • Spinning turbine blades of the Wind farm near the Cornish town of Delabole in England are blurred against fast-fading light. We barely see the three blades as they revolve to produce electricity for the national grid. First operational in mid December 1991 they were a very controversial project with locals who saw them as a blot on their familiar c though it’s permission went ahead nonetheless. The 10 turbines operated by Windelectric are carefully positioned in existing hedge lines about 270 m apart and have an annual output of about 12 million Kw hours, which equals 1 years consumption by 2700 average homes (a small town). To produce the same amount of electricity by conventional means, about 2000 tonnes of oil or 5000 tonnes of coal would have to be burnt each year, this has a Co2 offset of 4,475 tonnes.

  • As evening light fades, bright light from the electricity-hungry Canary Wharf docklands development is supplied by the voltage from electricity cables and supporting struts at an east London sub-station, England. A network of 110 miles of cables have stretched across 542 'L6' pylons across England's Kent countryside, from the coal-fired power station at Dungeness to this location, carrying 40,000 Volts along this network of aluminium cables to power some of London's high supply demands. Insatiable appetites for energy means electricity is now an expensive commodity after climbing oil prices doubled electricity utility bills for some domestic users.

  • As winter fog lifts, the waters of the River Thames clear to reveal an eerie landscape of industrial river life and architecture at Gravesend, Kent England. It is late-morning and in the hazy distance on the northern river bank, steam clouds near the double twin chimneys of npower's 1400MW coal fired Tilbury power station (powering 1.4 million homes using ?biomass? fuels and low-sulphur coal) which rise above the passing ghostly bulk of a cargo freighter on its last miles of its voyage from open sea into the Thames Estuary and on to Tilbury Docks. Historically, the Thames has long been a route for shipping that kept the capital supplied and although the docks have seen huge decreases in traffic and volume since the second world war, Tilbury remains a busy hub for containerized vessels arrivng from all over the world.

  • Just after heavy rain when the streets of London's West End are wet but brightening after the clouds have passed we look into the windows of a black taxi cab on the busy Charing Cross Road. It is a scene of urban transport and inclement weather. We can see the rough form of the taxi driver at the front of his vehicle but it appears that he is stationary, possibly awaiting for the return of his fare-paying passenger from nearby bookshops such as Foyles in the background. A No-Smoking sticker is on the window and advertising on the side panel shows the arms of an airline passenger sitting in an airliner seat but once the taxi passenger returns, their head will be directly above this. The car's roof is still wet from rain, glistening in the artificial street lights that have turned on during the dark rain storm.

  • Seen from slightly behind, a young woman stands taking shelter from early evening rain in Goodge Street, London England. Holding a lit cigarette in her left hand and with an unused ashtray to her right, she is chatting with friends who are also enjoying a relaxing hour after work. Under the UK Government's recent laws on smoking in public places, the work mates are forced outside the pub to smoke on the street in a special area away from the anti-smoking people indoors. Lit by glowing red lights that also provide warmth on this chilly January night, the friends are comfortable in their own company.

In the window are rows of Peking Duck with their skins cooked a crispy dark brown. Meanwhile, surrounded by cooking utensils and implements, the tools of their trade, two chefs busy themselves in the kitchen area, one's face shows him to be ethnic Chinese who is rubbing his hands in a cloth before continuing his chores. Two European girls are waiting expectantly for their dishes to arrive. Obscured by the steam and heat, a waiter in green bustles about this small eaterie.
