  • Household refuse pollutes a coral beach on Meedu Island, an indigenous community in the Republic of the Maldives in the Indian Ocean. Packaging, foodstuffs and general waste has been tossed away on this otherwise beautiful place, north of the capital Male. Unfortunately, the practice of tossing away one's rubbish is a normal practice in this culture, the local people selfishly unconcerned about the future of their habitat and the health of their community. Only a few miles from Meedu are islands that serve as holiday resorts where families from Europe travel by air for the perffect vacation - unaware that fly-tipping is so widespread that it threatens this nation's worldwide status as a paradise on earth..

Fellow-travellers in the background appear unworried, waiting for their respective flights in a calm manner. The lady in the foreground's body language however, suggests fatigue and distress and perhaps a fear of flying. • Nurses dispense medicine in the mens' surgical ward at St Bartholomews (Barts) Hospita n the City of London. Two gentlemen patients rest either before or after their operations for which their care is ensured by the nursing staff seen in the blue uniforms. St Bartholomew's Hospital, also known simply as Barts, is a hospital in Smithfield in the City of London. Barts is the oldest hospital in London, having been founded in 1123, and the oldest in the United Kingdom that still occupies its original site. Barts was founded in 1123 by Rahere (died 1144, and entombed in the nearby priory church of St Bartholomew-the-Great), a favourite courtier of King Henry I. London's only statue of King Henry VIII is located above a gate at the hospital. Barts is part of Barts Health NHS Trust.

  • We are looking into the face of a young unidentified male patient before his wisdom tooth extraction procedure at the famous St. Bartholomews (Barts) Hospital in London, England. His eyelids have been taped shut, lying unconscious on his back with his head supported, prepped for this brief operation. Surrounding him is various medical equipment including anaesthetic gas that is fed through his nose by plastic tubes. it is spotlessly clean in this operating room, carefully, avoiding infection or bacterial problems like MRSA. Barts is Britain's oldest hospital - founded in 1123 - and boasts a progressive policy of encouraging day-surgery for out-patients allowing patients to return home soon after their minor operations.

  • We are looking upwards into the faces of two surgeons wearing medical masks and surgical gowns as they carry out a wisdom tooth extraction procedure at the famous St. Bartholomews (Barts) Hospital in London, England. With eyes focussed on their work, the two health professionals are intently looking into the mouth of their patient who is covered in clean green sheets but remains unseen to the viewer. Strong operating theatre lights shine down on to the patient and we see the men's gloved hands reaching carefully, avoiding infection or bacterial problems like MRSA. Barts is Britain's oldest hospital - founded in 1123 - and boasts a progressive policy of encouraging day-surgery for out-patients allowing patients to return home soon after their minor operations.

  • An elderly patient undergoes Hemodialysis (a blood purifying treatment.) in the Renal unit at St Bartholomews (Barts) Hospital in Smithfield, The City of London, England. The woman is laying back in a comfortable armchair with her right arm flat on a cushion and the tubes that feeds her blood by vascular access from her body into the the dialyzer, a machine that filters the unpurified blood due to the patient's renal (kidney) failure. It is a bright room and many other machines are operating in this manner. Three quarters of the UK's 19,000 dialysis patients receive haemodialysis rather than Peritoneal dialysis, where a sterile solution containing minerals and glucose is run through a tube straight into the intestine.

  • We see a male passenger from the waste down with a laptop computer in one hand and a Retriever puppy peering out from his owner's bag in the other, both human and pet are about to board a domestic flight from Chicago O'Hare airport. According to the American Transport Security Administration, taking pets into the aircraft cabin is permissable but the animal is required to be presented to the Security Officers at the checkpoint. it may also walk with its owner through the metal detector but not through the x-ray scanner. • Air passengers exit and enter a transit train at Chicago O'Hare airport, Illinois USA. They pull suitcases behind them as they negotiate the airport terminal transport system that takes them across the sprawling complex of terminals and tunnels. A large central yellow traffic arrow saying OUT is most prominent telling arriving people to keep in the middle, allowing those departing to enter the carriage from the sides. There is a slight blur to the picture showing the hurrying nature of modern air travel, vastly different from the pioneering days of flight for only the socially elite. • Looking down from above, we see one lone queuing traveller at Charles de Gaulle, gazes up towards the large Departures board. Fellow-passengers wait by baggage trolleys in a civilised line beneath the information. Charles de Gaulle/Roissy is a hub airport for Air France north of the French capital. The departures information has schedule times, destinations, flight, satellite and gate numbers plus remarks. Air travellers experience such misery every day and shows of how global air travel has become a routine, mundane and stressful for the everyday airline passenger - a far cry from when commercial flight was purely for the elite. • An NHS surgeon performs an operation in a London hospital using endoscopy. Endoscopy (pronounced means looking inside and typically refers to looking inside the body for medical reasons using an endoscope, an instrument used to examine the interior of a hollow organ or cavity of the body. Unlike most other medical imaging devices, endoscopes are inserted directly into the organ. Endoscopy can also refer to using a borescope in technical situations where direct line-of-sight observation is not feasible.
