  • Commuters walk about in all directions in the heat of summer in the city during a 3-day underground tube strike in September 2007. As a result of the industrial action, the buses are full so the quickest way of reaching one's destination is to walk. People near Victoria Station, a transport hub for tube lines, buses and overground train routes so we see businessmen in dark suits during the heatwave, women striding along towards their transport home and we look up at them from a low-angle in the street. One man seems to pause from indecision while others are more confident about their fate and direction in life.

  • Two pedestrians cross the cobbled Rua Sa da Bandeira, followed closely by a pair of Segway riding tourists, on 21st July, in Porto, Portugal. Segway tours have become controversial additions to the European city sightseeing scene, already being banned in Barcelona and Prague. But in Portuguese cities like Lisbon and Porto, Segway travellers still share narrow and busy streets and often, pavements, with locals on foot. • A pair of trainers attached to the foot plate on boat belonging to the Oxford University rowing team outside a boathouse in Putney, West London before a winter training session. First raced in 1829 the boat race between Oxford and Cambridge unbiversities is one of the oldest sporting events in the world. It is nowadays watched by thousands along the banks of The Thames Tideway, between Putney and Mortlake in London and by millions more on TV around the world. The footplate is a piece of the boat to which the rower's feet are attached, either by tying their actual shoes in, or (more often) by putting their feet into a permanently-attached pair of shoes. (also Foot stretcher and footchock).

  • Seen from ground-level, a pair of feet in white trainers are seen large in the foreground on lush grass, one standing on a foot pump as it inflates a camping lilo air bed on a summer afternoon at the Trewethett Farm Caravan Club Site, Tintagel, Cornwall. Seen through the man's bare legs, the man's wife sits in front of the caravan's awning on a sun chair, cuddling the family pet dog. Caravanning is one the favourite leisure pastimes in Britain, its association, the elite Caravan Club, was founded in 1907 and now represents nearly 1 million members (caravanners, motor caravanners and trailer tenters) and has an annual turnover of £86 million. On the open road, the caravan is as ridiculed and despised for its slowness and the width it occupies on narrow country lanes.

  • A detail of a Welsh Guard's red tunic uniform including a medal for service in Northern Ireland. Polished button and a faultlessly clean surface proves the high standards expected by this famous British army regiment. The Welsh Guards (Gwarchodlu Cymreig) part of the Guards Division, is one of the Foot Guards regiments of the British Army. The Welsh Guards came into existence on 26 February 1915 by Royal Warrant of His Majesty King George V in order to include Wales in the national component to the Foot Guards.

  • Ferry signs foer the Ulva ferry, Isle of Mull, Scotland. Ulva is open from Easter to October; the ferry which takes foot passengers and bicycles runs Monday to Friday 9 - 5. The crossing only takes a couple of minutes and is on demand; summon the ferry by uncovering the red panel on the pier but don't forget to cover it again as the boat approaches. The island is closed on Saturdays but opens on Sundays from June to the end of August. Ulva is a privately owned island with a thriving population of approximately 16 people who are involved variously in traditional sheep and cattle farming, fish farming, oyster farming and tourism. There are no tarmac roads on Ulva, so the main form of transport is quad bikes used by all inhabitants, young and old. Ulva is from the Viking “Ullamhdha”, or ‘Nobody Home’. They named the island ‘Ullfur’, their word for ‘Wolf Island’. .

  • On a street in Macau (also Macao) in the Chinese Special Economic Region (SER), we see the tall stack of cardboard on the back of a bicycle. Its partly-obscured rider and owner has one foot placed on the bike's pedal while his right arm has firm hold of the pile of materials to prevent it from toppling over. In the background we see the signs of many local businesses, their Chinese characters seen clearly on the sides of buildings as pedestrians walk on the pavements. Administered by Portugal until 1999, Macau was the oldest European colony in China, dating back to the 16th century. The administrative power over Macau was transferred to the People's Republic of China (PRC) in 1999, 2 years after Hong Kong's own handover. Macau's name is derived from A-Ma-Gau or Place of A-Ma

  • As blue dawn light becomes another wintry day in south London, the glow of a car's brake lights shines through a covering of fresh snow. The driver has only swept the vehicle's back window with a rear wiper but with her foot on the brake pedal, she is about to set off on a drive to work this morning on roads that have controversially, not been gritted or salted by council highway workers. The surface is therefore still snowy in this residential area of Herne Hill, SE24, London and is a treacherous surface on which to maintain wheel and tyre (tire) traction and many accidents will result, including the heavy lorry (truck) which is about to climb this hill and which will soon prevent him from going much further.

  • Mexican Papantla Flyers perform a pre-Hispanic ritual dedicated to their sun god, a leap from a 90 foot pole, on 15th May 1996, the Tulum ruins, Yucatan, Mexico. Dressed in their native costumes these men lash themselves to this towering pole with a leather bindings and soar off into space backwards and upside down in the ultimate leap of faith. The Papantla Flyers are Totonac Indians performing an ancient fertility ceremony. As they slowly descend to earth, the 13 revolutions made by the four flyers equal the 52-year span of the Aztec century. They represent earth, water, fire and air and the interweaving of these four elements symbolizes the creation of new life. A fifth man is left on top, dancing on this tiny nine-inch platform while simultaneously playing both a pre-Columbian flute and drum.

  • The Priddy Sheep hurdle stack shelter at the Priddy Sheep Fair. Moved from Wells in 1348 because of the Black Death, evidence has been found of a Fair being held at Priddy before that. There is a local legend, which says that as long as the hurdle stack remains in the village, so will the Fair. The Fair is held on the nearest Wednesday to 21st August, although originally it was held on the feast of St Lawrence the Martyr on the10th August. The fair has been continuously held every year since 1348, apart from the recent 2001 and 2007 foot -and-mouth epidemic years.
