  • Five elderly women on-lookers are lined against a wall outside the famous Ascot race course on Ladies' Day, the annual event on the English sporting and social calendar in June. Each are standing in order of size, from tallest (who holds a Tesco supermarket bag) to smallest and watch as two posh couples arrive for the day's racing dressed in showy dresses for the ladies and the men in formal top hat and tails. The posh lady in the front is in yellow and holds on to her straw hat on this windy summer day. Each wears their red Ascot badges allowing them entry to this exclusive royal event attended by the Royal Family and the hoi polloi of English society. We see the two sides of the class system but it is a humerous scene. There is good nature between the two groups with smiles exchanged with one couple but discomfort from those behind.

  • Two days after the Irish Republican Army (IRA) exploded a truck bomb on Bishopsgate, a main arterial road that travels north-south through London's financial area, City of London two on-lookers stop to crane their necks upwards to view the damage to the tall HSBC building. With both their hands up to shield the sun from their faces, the men stand aghast at the amount of devastation to their working landscape. It was said that Roman remains could be viewed at the bottom of the pit the bomb created. One person was killed when the one ton fertiliser bomb detonated directly outside the medieval St Ethelburga's church. Buildings up to 500 metres away were damaged, with one and a half million square feet (140,000 m) of office space being affected and over 500 tonnes of glass broken. repair costs reached approx £350 million.

  • A holy Sadhu man attracts a crowd on the Maidan in central Calcutta, India. Near some ballustrades built by the British during the last years of the Raj, the man is leaning forward on his knees and his head is buried in gravel. Practicing Tapas or Niyamas, is one form of Austerity that holy men like this perform to cleanse themselves of bad thoughts. It is a conservation of energy; an increase of power in the system by sense control; a process of positive-thought, self-imposed hardships and inner-strength - all to gain a higher being for oneself. They might stand in cold water in winter, stand on or bury their heads in earth. Niyamas also breeds non-violence, truthfullness, non-stealing, moderation, non-possessiveness, purity, contentment, discipline, study and surrender.

  • Pedestrians walk in spring sunshine over the newly re-opened Millennium Bridge over London's River Thames, England. The £18.2m bridge, central London's first new river crossing (from tate Modern to St Paul's Cathedral) for more than a century, was opened on 10 June 2000 but was shut three days later because of what engineers called the "synchronised footfall" - the swaying effect of hundreds of people stepping in unison. 91 dampers similar to shock absorbers were fitted allowing its re-opening in early 2002. We see here hundreds of visitors to the Bankside walking north and south across this convenient piece of engineering. Coincidentally, they walk on the same right side as drivers in the UK. Two businessmen walk closest to the viewer but elsewhere people look like tourists and pleasure-seekers.

  • Visitors to the ancient site of Stonehenge celebrate the Summer Solstice on the morning of June 21st - the longest day - by dancing in circles while holding hands. The Stonehenge site is a place of pilgrimage for neo-druids and those following pagan or neo-pagan beliefs. The midsummer sunrise began attracting modern visitors in 1870s. Today the stones are owned by English Heritage, the guardians of ancient and historical structures. Most years, substantial police and barriers prevent on-lookers from approaching the stones but on this occasion, revellers were allowed to party long after the early 4.15am sunrise. Stonehenge is a Neolithic and Bronze Age megalithic monument located near Amesbury in the English county of Wiltshire. Composed of earthworks surrounding a circular setting of large standing stones it is one of the most famous prehistoric sites in the world. Archaeologists think that the standing stones were erected between 2500 BC and 2000 BC and served as an outdoor observatory from where to watch the constellations. The site and its surroundings were added to the UNESCO's list of World Heritage Sites in 1986.

With other bathers also lying in sun on the warm poolside pavement, some white and another Rastafarian with dreadlocks, it's a largely mixed crowd ethnically. Brockwell Lido in Herne Hill SE24 was originally built in 1937 at a time of coastal and city pool-building but went into decline when bathers preferred to holiday in warmer Spain. Its revival happened when local entrepreneurs re-opened the business and it now enjoys a reputation for some of the best urban swims in the UK.

  • A new model of Routemaster bus has broken down and disrupts traffic in a City of London street. The New Bus for London, sometimes referred to as NB4L, and colloquially as the New Routemaster or Borismaster (after the Mayor of London who drove their introduction) is a 21st-century replacement of the iconic AEC Routemaster as a bus built specifically for use in London. Designed by Heatherwick Studio, it is built by Wrightbus, and features the 'hop-on hop-off' rear open platform of the original Routemaster, but meets the requirements for modern buses to be fully accessible. The first bus entered service on 27 February 2012. The cost of each bus is £354,500.

The first modern chess tournament was organized by Howard Staunton, a leading English chess player, and was held in London in 1851. It was won by the relatively unknown German Adolf Anderssen, who was hailed as the leading chess master, and his brilliant, energetic attacking style became typical for the time, although it was later regarded as strategically shallow.
