  • A boy stands leaning on a hand rail near the top steps at Paignton sea front. At the bottom of the steps and floating face down in the clear, unpolluted water, his arms outstretched, is a diver wearing a wet suit who appears lifeless. It is a scene of ambiguity and the viewer might be confused over whether the diver is in fact dead. It looks as if the diver has drowned but he is only enjoying the buoyancy of the salt sea water. It is a sunny afternoon and the shadows of the steps' rail which zigzags down the concrete steps.

  • A lone bather wallows lazily in the calm pool waters at the Grand-Hôtel du Cap-Ferrat (formerly the Bel Air Hotel), Alpes Maritimes, France. Basking on his back, the man lies with arms outstretched, the warm buoyant water making him weightless. he has found inner-peace and there is restful tranquility here, where surface-tension allows the bather to unwind completely in this idyllic place on the French Cote d'Azur riviera. Behind his head unoccupied sun loungers are facing the Mediterranean Sea, its clear horizon empty except for a lone yacht that sails along the ocean coast. The colour of both sea and pool are the same on this overcast day that allows us to experience a more muted tone to the scene, also allowing us to see the contiunation of natural waters, as if they run from one to the other.

  • "Crooked Lady." A twelve month-old girl who has recently learned to walk proudly strides past an elderly lady with balancing arms outstretched while at the Dulwich Show in South London. There is a marked difference between the youthful, upright posture of the young girl to the hunched and bent stance of the old woman who stands supporting herself on a brolley. It is a picture that compares youth with old age, the delight that a person of later years shows to a child whose life reaches far ahead. This is from a documentary series of pictures about the first year of the photographer's first child Ella. Accompanied by personal reflections and references from various nursery rhymes, this work describes his wife Lynda's journey from expectant to actual motherhood and for Ella - from new-born to one year-old.

  • "Garden ballet." With hands outstretched, a ten month-old infant supports her weight on some garden chairs as she learns to stand on her own two feet. Without the strength in her legs, she loses her balance and her mother stands behind holding her daughter by the waist preventing her from falling over. It is a warm summer afternoon with both mother and child barefoot on the back garden patio and we see the experience of an adult encouraging a developing human being with the confidence to stand erect with back straight. This is from a documentary series of pictures about the first year of the photographer's first child Ella. He stands on one leg in a typically eccentric aviation-owner balancing trick. Behind him near the aircraft's nose a Virgin 'babe' echoes his outstretched arms while flying the British Union Jack flag. Farnborough centres its presence on big aerospace business to the tune of $40bn in orders and industry leaders like Branson, Boeing and Airbus parade their brands and announce new orders throughout the week-long display. Spinning his partner on the specially-laid flooring, the gentleman is dressed in a double-breasted suit in keeping with the 1950s theme of this fair's celebration of a newly-refurbished park. The lady wears a red dress and holds her arm out to regain balance as she is pulled back towards her dance partner. The seated crowd watch attentively beneath London Plain trees whose foliage gives welcome shade on a warm summer afternoon.

  • Seen from a hillside opposite, with the clear blue backdrop of the snow-covered Himalayan mountain peaks, a Nepalese family crouch on the hilltop to rest during a family walk from their community village near Gorkha, Central Nepal. In the middle of the picture, a young girl twirls and dances across the clearing as her parents and siblings watch, drawfed by the powerfully- dominant range of natural features that form part of the highest altitudes on earth although Gorkha is only 3281 feet (about 1000 meters) above sea level. These peoples' homes cling to the sides of impressive mountains that draw tens of thousands of travellers to this region to trek the paths and conservation sanctuaries of this fast-developing Buddhist and Hindu Kingdom.

  • Wearing a peaked cap and small rucksack, a young adventurer, clambers over rocks in the ancient forest of Monbachtal Bach in Germany's Black Forest. Stretching to climb the rock, the lad of 10 uses his hand and walking stick to balance as he puts a boot higher to gain a sure footing. There is ample covering of moss and lichen on the primeval landscape making it hazardous to conquer but the boy stumbles over the terrain and continues his walk through this beautiful wilderness. The boy is alone in the picture though accompanied by his family but he seems to mange on his own, capable of finding his own limits of endurance and confidence. Geologically, the Black Forest consists of a cover of sandstone on top of a core of gneiss. During the last glacial period, the Würm glaciation, the Black Forest was covered by glaciers.

  • An eleven year-old girl swings with head thrown backwards in a field in Herefordshire, England. It is an image of care-free youth, of a free-spirit and without a care in the world. The young lady gazes skyward as the swing takes her on an upward trajectory, the sun sinking behind distant trees, a scene of splendid inner-peace and tranquillity, disturbed only by the creaking of the rope on the tree above that supports her as she rides. She is staying at this small camp site where tipis and yurts is the theme of this eco-friendly and carbon-neutral holiday.

  • A Christian crucifix stands encased in a wooden box that has been attached to a panelled wall in Quebec, Canada. The image is white except for the Jesus icon itself and coloured lights which glow on this dark afternoon in the depths of Winter. The religious shrine consists of the human effigy standing a plinth next to faded dried flowers. On the left side are six wheel hubs also fixed to a wire fence that borders this person's property. Their decorative design suggests the Canadian owner likes driving sports or utility vehicles but who is also a worshipper of the Christian faith and believer in idols. Canada's 2001 Census showed, 72% of the Canadian population listed Roman Catholicism or Protestantism as their religion. The Roman Catholic Church in Canada is by far the country's largest single denomination.

  • Lying on her back with eyes closed, a young girl stretches her arms out allowing her father to support her weight in an empty swimming pool in Miami Florida. With complete trust, she lets herself go and yields to her own natural buoyancy as she floats amid this seemingly wide ocean of chlorinated water belonging to a hotel on Ocean Drive. We see her bright red costume clearly against the complimentary prime colour green in a vibrant display from the spectrum. It is a scene of love and confidence, of youth and health.

  • Wearing a safety helmet and t-shirt , a nine year-old girl cyclist pretends to be asleep, having has collapsed on the grass at Peckham Rye Park in South London after a marathon ride into the centre of London. 'Freewheel' was a Hovis-sponsored event for riders and families to enjoy a day of traffic-free cycling through the capital's streets and this girl has ridden 18 miles on this late-summer Sunday - starting and finishing in this park. The shadow of a rear bicycle wheel can be seen to her right and she feigns death by spreading out on the grass, pretending to sleep before reviving herself with a drink and pedalling on home, yet another mile away.

  • "Homo erectus." At the exact moment that a young human being walks for the first time, an eleven month-old girl infant conquers her fear and takes her first tentative upright unaided steps. After months of building lower leg strength by pushing and leaning against household objects, she now leaves the protective hands of a delighted but nervous mother who relishes the joyous moment of her offspring's great achievement. The girl's legs and hips help propel her forward motion, naturally making her an upright bi-pedal species. This is from a documentary series of pictures about the first year of the photographer's first child Ella. Accompanied by personal reflections and references from various nursery rhymes, this work describes his wife Lynda's journey from expectant to actual motherhood and for Ella - from new-born to one year-old.

  • Whilst one spectator cranes her neck skyward, another is oblivious to an air show spectacle above their heads. One looks up into the sun, shielding her eyes with a hand and outstretched fingers but the other concentrates on lighting her cigarette with a match. Unseen in this picture, the elite 'Red Arrows', Britain's prestigious Royal Air Force aerobatic team, are performing high in the blue skies above the public on West Greensward, Clacton-on-Sea, Essex. In front of the seaside town's brightly coloured red and yellow Lifeguard Station, the two ladies have different interests in the aerobatic manoeuvres. The Red Arrows' 25-minute display either captivates some or bores others although they can be seen upwards of 90-plus shows and fly-pasts each year in front of several millions live or on TV. They have flown over 4,000 shows in 52 countries.
