  • Chief Technician Kerry Griffiths is a with the 'Red Arrows', Britain's Royal Air Force aerobatic team, the elite 'Red Arrows', Britain's prestigious Royal Air Force aerobatic team. In camouflaged military green jacket, large forearms and rolled-up sleeves, he oversees the loading of spares and personal effects into a C-130 Hercules aircraft before the two-day journey from RAF Scampton to RAF Akrotiri in Cyprus. Surrounded by heavy-duty flight-spares, survival equipment boxes and a tyre for a Hawk jet aircraft, the Hercules looms large in the overcast sky. The team complete their winter training schedule in Cyprus. The Red Arrows pilots fly their own jet aircraft to air shows but when requiring the support of ground crew they borrow a transporter to fly behind the main airborne squadron. 10 tons of spares and personal effects are shipped for a six-week stay.

  • High up in the picture, two employees (one in traditional Arab clothes, the other in western dress) of Bahrain International Airport stand on the edge of a passenger 'air bridge' to oversee the departure of an airliner at Bahrain International Airport as it is pushed back by an unseen airport vehicle. It is night time and the ramp (or aircraft parking tarmac) is illuminated by yellow artificial light with the bridge itself, lit my overhead fluorescent tubes that give a blue-green tint above the mens' heads who watch the nose of a departing airliner. It is slowly taken backwards on its way to the runway take-off position with its passengers on-board. We see only the fuselage, wings and part of its engine cowlings but not the undercarriage wheels, nor the ground itself. The men look as if they are floating in mid-air, being disembodied from the rest of the airfield's equipment.

  • Looking down from a high vantage point, we see boy pupils seated as they gather in front of the Headmaster during morning assembly at the City of London School for boys in central London. Individual faces in neat rows stretch into the distance as we look past the Headmaster who is addressing, facing his students. Some seem serious, a few are looking bored while one boy can be seen coughing into his hand and another looking away with a smirk. We can see a diverse range of ethnic backgrounds, skin colours and hairstyles. The City of London School (CLS) is a boys' public school on the banks of the River Thames. It traces its origins to a bequest of land by John Carpenter, town clerk of London in 1442. The City of London has a resident population of under 10,000 but a daily working population of 311,000. The City of London is a geographically-small City within Greater London, England. The City as it is known, is the historic core of London from which, along with Westminster, the modern conurbation grew. The City's boundaries have remained constant since the Middle Ages but it is now only a tiny part of Greater London. The City of London is a major financial centre, often referred to as just the City or as the Square Mile, as it is approximately one square mile (2.6 km) in area. London Bridge's history stretches back to the first crossing over Roman Londinium, close to this site and subsequent wooden and stone bridges have helped modern London become a financial success.

  • The flight-deck crew of a Sri Lankan Airlines A340-300 series Airbus - registration number 4R-ADE - perform a series of pre-flight checks before a scheduled departure, while on the apron at Malé international airport in the Republic of the Maldives. Featuring electronic instruments it is known as a 'glass cockpit' and using a printed checklist manual, they methodically work through dozens of complex systems that require accurate input before the aircraft is ready for take off. Flight navigation computers, fuel and engine settings and radio frequencies all need programming by the two pilots, the captain on the left and the First Officer on the right. These modern airliners have only two pilots in a modern flight-deck as technology superceeded the need for a third member, the flight-engineers of a previous era of aviation.

  • Abraham Lincoln, the 16th President of the United States sits on his throne watching over this nation's capital as a tourist is dwarfed in scale beneath. Strong but low orange light pours through the East-facing entrance. The Lincoln Memorial stands at the west end of the National Mall as a neoclassical monument to the 16th President. Designed by Henry Bacon, it stands almost 100 feet high, surrounded by 36 massive fluted columns, each 37 feet (10 m) high. The actual statue of Lincoln is 19 feet high and weighs 175 tons.

  • At the famous Butlins holiday camp in the Somerset town of Minehead, a poolside lifeguard overlooks the main pool from an overhead bridge. Behind him a monorail transports holidaymakers around the resort. Wearing the large letter B for Butlins on his red vest, the young lad sucks on his whistle held between his lips and prominently, the words 'Made in England' have been tattooed on his left shoulder - as if a statement for his patriotic ideals but also for those of Butlins - an institution for the British working classes who after the war had the opportunity to spend their summers at special resorts in seaside towns that provided entertainment and fun. Butlins and other camp businesses went into decline when the masses preferred Spanish vacations but have since been revived as travel costs have again soared and holidays at home are once again popular.

  • In the foreground we see the strong forearm of a British army soldier whose blood group O-Negative has been tattooed in large letters beneath an image of a Japanese Geisha girl. He also wears a watch with aq green strap matching his working army fatigues uniform. Behind him are two part-time territorial army conscripts who are sitting on their army-issued rucksack Bergens awaiting further orders to serve on active duty from Sandhurst military academy to the Balkans during Operation Resolute, the National Support Element to support NATO action. The dominating figure in the foreground stands upright though we don't see his face. His two conscripts sit on the ground looking dejected or perhaps worried about their forthcoming duties. They are still in civillian clothing, jeans and t-shirts but will soon change into uniform.

  • In a sterile clean room, one module section of the European Space Agency's Automated Transfer Vehicle (ATV) called Jules Verne, is under construction by technicians of an integration team at Europe's Spaceport in Kourou, French Guiana. The ATV cargo carrier is the world's largest and most complex orbiting spacecraft and is a new series of autonomous spaceships designed to re-supply the International Space Station with replacement cargo, propellant, water and oxygen to the orbital outpost. Launched in March 2008 and self-destructed with waste during its return to earth's atmosphere that September, it delivered 4.6 tonnes of payload to the ISS, including 1,150 kg of dry cargo, 856 kg of propellant for the Russian Zvezda module, 270 kg of drinking water and 21 kg of oxygen.
