  • Surrounded by black bin-bags during the Merseyside dustmans' strike of 1991, two young "Scouse' girls lean against a brick wall in a rear alleyway between poor terraced housing in Liverpool, England. There is an older, taller white teenage girl with blonde hair dressed in a blue shell-suit and a shorter and younger friend of Asian-descent. Looking suspicious and amused at something across the cobbled alley of these 'back to back' houses in a poor area, South of the city centre, home to deprived families. The industrial action aginst the local authority was a health problem for Liverpool during the summer of '91 when streets filled with rubbish. Vermin like rats ran around and public city parks filled with every kind of refuse and garbage. Few of these back-to-backs exist after being cleared to allow construction of high-rise tower-blocks and flats.

  • In a rear alleyway between poor terraced housing in Liverpool, England, we see many black bin-bags are left against industrial brick walls awaiting collection during the Merseyside dustmans' strike of 1991. The industrial action against the local authority was a health problem for Liverpool during the summer of '91 when streets filled with rubbish. • Standing on the back of his utility vehicle, a man empties the contents of his dustbin onto a growing pile of rubbish in a recreation park in the otherwise affluent Allerton area of Liverpool, Merseyside, England, during the Merseyside dustmans' strike of 1991. Adding to this mountain of refuse, the 'Scouse' man (someone from Liverpool) is seen surrounded by black binliners and items from domestic homes which have been allocated this public space to become a temporary landfill. The industrial action aginst the local authority - over pay and working conditions - was a health problem for Liverpool's population during the summer of 1991 when streets filled with rubbish. Vermin like rats ran around and public city parks such as this were filled with every kind of refuse and garbage.

  • An employee of an unidentified recycling company used by BAA (British Airports Authority) rakes through a mountain of glass bottles, piled high in a depsitory near Gatwick Airport, Sussex England. The drinks from these branded bottles have been consumed at airport terminal buildings and other BAA property and the man dressed in a fluorescent safety jacket scrapes the containers in readiness for transportation to another facility. The picture is an upright and with such a wide-angle view, we see the bottles stretching from the closest to the lens to the far end of the compartment in a mound of materials destined for a machine that will crush and transform them into new glass.

  • In the heart of the City of London, a caterpillar tracked crane tears down the walls of an old 70s office block close to St Paul's Cathedral, England. As a pedestrian walks past the blue hoardings that protect passers-by like him, the rubble is piled high before being removed as spoil to make way for an brand new construction that appears in an artist's impression picture on the right, above two site engineers wearing fluorescent jackets and hard hats. This is a scene of renewal in London's financial district. Of optimism and regeneration as businesses invest in new workplaces and replacing the tired, old offices that cannot accommodate new computer and server cabling technology. ..
