  • Displayed in the window of a traditional Chinese medicine shop in Tsim Sha Tsui, Hong Kong, are the labels and plastic bags containing some of the 500 Chinese herbs that are in use today in Eastern herbal remedies, of which 250 or so are very commonly used in the treatment of ailments and diseases. Rather than being prescribed individually, single herbs are combined into formulas designed to adapt to specific needs of individual patients. Herbal formulas contain from 3 to 25 herbs or animal parts, some sourced from endangered species. As with diet therapy, each herb has one or more of the five flavours/functions and one of five "temperatures" ("Qi") (hot, warm, neutral, cool, cold). After the herbalist determines the energetic temperature and functional state of the patient's body, they prescribe a mixture of herbs tailored to balance disharmony.

  • A woman throws a drinks bottle on to a pile of assorted plastic materials awaiting removal from the coastal landscape, having been collected by volunteers from a beach on Holy Island, on 27th September 2017, on Lindisfarne Island, Northumberland, England. The amount of rubbish found dumped on UK beaches rose by a third last year, according to a new report. More than 8,000 plastic bottles were collected by the Marine Conservation Society’s annual beach clean-up at seaside locations from Orkney to the Channel Islands on one weekend in September 2016. The Holy Island of Lindisfarne, also known simply as Holy Island, is an island off the northeast coast of England. Holy Island has a recorded history from the 6th century AD; it was an important centre of Celtic and Anglo-saxon Christianity. After the Viking invasions and the Norman conquest of England, a priory was reestablished.

  • During the Liverpool binmens' strike of 1991, litter and refuse bags collect in the back alleyway of back-to-back terraced houses, on 14th June 1991, in Liverpool, England. Surrounded by black bin-bags during the Merseyside dustmans' strike of 1991, two young "Scouse' girls lean against a brick wall in a rear alleyway between poor terraced housing in Liverpool, England. The industrial action against the local authority was a health problem for Liverpool over that summer when streets filled with rubbish. Vermin like rats ran around and public city parks filled with every kind of refuse and garbage. Few of these back-to-backs existed in the 1990s after being cleared to allow construction of high-rise tower-blocks and flats. (Photo by Richard Baker / In Pictures via Getty Images)

  • A hunched, homeless elderly man walks along Fenchurch Street in the City of London while younger and affluent office workers saunter past, smiling and with a care in the world. It is a scene of social class division, the contrasts between wealth and poverty, have and have nots, prospects and no hope for the future and of old age and youth. The old man carries a plastic bag with all his belongings and the workers carry their lunch in a paper bag. They are not only smart and he dishevelled but they stand tall and he is stooped, further proof of the hard, demanding life he leads on the capital's streets.

  • Reading his newspaper to pass the time, a businessman in traditional Gulf state thawb and agal headdress awaits his flight from Bahrain in the Persian Gulf. With a plastic bag alongside containing Duty Free purchases and with the cheeky face for the Adams kids clothing brand for his young family, the man studies the latest news from the Gulf states and further Middle-East region before boarding his airline departure, seen here months before the terrorist attacks on America that changed the public's attitude to flying on commercial airliners.

  • A resident of Liverpool takes his refuse to Allerton Park during the Liverpool binmens' strike of 1991, on 14th June 1991, in Liverpool, Merseyside, England.
