  • On a busy Summer weekend, families enjoy the old Tarr Steps Clapper Bridge over the River Barle in Exmoor National Park, Devon, England. Crossing on the huge stone prehistoric slabs which weigh up to 5 tons apiece, children play with fishing nets, walk dogs and sit enjoying the view below of others who mess about in a small inflatable dinghy on the flowing stream. Located in a National Nature Reserve about 2.5 miles (4 km) south east of Withypool and 4 miles (6 km) north west of Dulverton, this spot is a favourite tourist place in South-West England. This typical clapper bridge construction may date to around 1000 BC. It is 180 feet (55 m) long and has 17 spans and designated by English Heritage as a grade I listed building.

  • In a Brussels Flea Market, two curly-haired twin sisters wander about the cobbled square to play with a an empty push-chair at the Marché du Jeu de Balle, in the Marolles district of Belgium's capital city. In harsh sunlight the girls role-play at mothering, a gender conditioning that all children discover and these females are finding it natural to act as parents at such a young age. An antique doll sits looking in our direction, dressed in frilly clothes and all around is Chinese laquered furniture and other kids' toys like a hobby horse and a trike. At Place du Jeu de Balle Flea Market, you can find an extraordinary mix of household items, vintage clothes, crockery and furniture. This market is open daily from 6am to 2pm and is in the heart of the "Marolles" district, a working-class neighbourhood that was built in the 17th century...

Climbing on the top of the tank, the kids risk injury on the surface, with many sharp corners and places to fall from. In the week near the anniversary date of May 8, 1945, when the World War II Allies formally accepted the unconditional surrender of the armed forces of Germany and peace was announced to tumultuous crowds across European cities, the British still go out of their way to honour those sacrificed and the realisation that peace was once again achieved. Street parties now – as they did in 1945 – played a large part in the country’s patriotic well-being.

Rows of temporary marquee tents, or casetas, host families, corporations and friends into the late hours during the April Fair which begins begins two weeks after the Semana Santa, or Easter Holy Week in the Andalusian capital.

Pulling on socks is a young lad from a nearby school whose uniform is a red blazer and striped tie. With their clothing of their friends still lie on the shngle, their afternoon of play day is coming to an end. In the background is the western Palace Pier, a major landmark on this south coast resort. Ofsted's guidelines are that for children of 9-12, a ratio of one adult to 8 young people is a requirement.

With window light falling across the dad and girl, the two are both dressed in shades of blue - the father with darker skin than his daughter. They are both Tamil refugees from the Indian Ocean Island of Sri Lanka and have escaped the civil war there where their ethnic group is being dangerously persecuted by the Singhalese majority. The family have recently arrived in Britain seeking political asylum and are temporarily housed in a bare council flat in Chalk Farm in North London. The girl reaches up to touch the man's moustache and he lets her grab his mouth in a playful respite from their life-changing circumstances.

  • A teenage boy tries the sights of a WW2 sten gun during 1995 VE Day 50th anniversary celebrations in London. Picking up the replica weapon, the boy takes aim along the barrel of the gun, pretending to shoot an unseen enemy. Wearing military clothing and a hat with union jack colours plus flag in a back pocket, he plays the soldier at a time of remembrance of those killed during wartime. In the week near the anniversary date of May 8, 1945, when the World War II Allies formally accepted the unconditional surrender of the armed forces of Germany and peace was announced to tumultuous crowds across European cities, the British still go out of their way to honour those sacrificed and the realisation that peace was once again achieved. Street parties now – as they did in 1945 – played a large part in the country’s patriotic well-being.

Here the Thames is at its most serene, where visitors enjoy its shallows with the fear of strong currents, tides or large boating activity.
