  • A young girl of approximately 9 years of age plays with her father. With window light falling across the dad and girl, the two are both dressed in shades of blue - the father with darker skin than his daughter. They are both Tamil refugees from the Indian Ocean Island of Sri Lanka and have escaped the civil war there where their ethnic group is being dangerously persecuted by the Singhalese majority. The family have recently arrived in Britain seeking political asylum and are temporarily housed in a bare council flat in Chalk Farm in North London. The girl reaches up to touch the man's moustache and he lets her grab his mouth in a playful respite from their life-changing circumstances.

  • "More than you can chew." A ten month-old infant uses new teeth to bite her mother's nose in the back garden of their Victorian south London terrace home. The mum winces in pain as the child sinks her new milk teeth into her skin but they enjoy a warm summer afternoon, playfully interacting with each other in a moment of parental love and harmony. The girl wears a short-sleeved t-shirt and has plump arms of baby fat, a healthy sign of a contented infant. This is from a documentary series of pictures about the first year of the photographer's first child Ella. Accompanied by personal reflections and references from various nursery rhymes, this work describes his wife Lynda's journey from expectant to actual motherhood and for Ella - from new-born to one year-old.

  • A boy stands leaning on a hand rail near the top steps at Paignton sea front. At the bottom of the steps and floating face down in the clear, unpolluted water, his arms outstretched, is a diver wearing a wet suit who appears lifeless. It is a scene of ambiguity and the viewer might be confused over whether the diver is in fact dead. It looks as if the diver has drowned but he is only enjoying the buoyancy of the salt sea water. It is a sunny afternoon and the shadows of the steps' rail which zigzags down the concrete steps.

  • A rather rotund man wearing a flat cap, a checked shirt under braces that keep his ample trousers up above his fat tummy, affectionately tickled his pet dog, a Whippet ,who stands still with two paws on his master's large leg. It is a bright day on the beach at Great Yarmouth in Norfolk, England. Bathers are running on the sand in the background and the man and his dog are content to watch the world go by from their promenade bench. Their is a great deal of trust and love these two have for each other - the gentleman having brought his dog on holiday to the seaside with him, rather than leave him with friends or in kennels. The dog is healthy, lithe and obviously has great speed in those muscular legs, vastly different to the man, whose frame is heavy and slow.

  • Children play in a desolate street in the town of Nova Huta. Amid the filthy walls of their tenement building home and of the grim, car less street beyond, two older children play in their doorway while younger friends peer from around a corner. It is horribly depressing and unhealthy place to grow up and these children are pale and yet seem happy, with smiles on their faces. The famous steel works can be seen st the end of the street. After the war, Stalin decided to build an ideological communist fantasy just outside Krakow: a model town and immense steelworks of the future. The steelworks was named after Lenin and the town would be called Nova Huta. At its peak, 27,000 people worked at the Lenin Steelworks. But Solidarity grew strong forcing strikes over pay and recognition over their union. Today, it is an economic and ecological disaster area. .

  • Usually played in pairs for morning and evenings calls to prayer, preludes, and processions, two western nuns following Tibetan-Buddhism play their Rag-Dung (brass trumpets) in a garden at the Kagyu Samye Ling Monastery and Tibetan Centre in Eskdalemuir, Scotland. One nun looks across to check finger positions of her fellow-player and they are sat cross-legged on the lush grass surrounded with flowers and tall plants. The Rag-Dung is the most spectacular of Tibetan ritual copper horns and some are up to twenty feet long. With a deeply resonant sound it is relatively easy to play. Those following this branch of Buddhism arrive in the Scottish wilderness for isolated Retreat periods, for short-term spiritual relaxation or to follow Tibetan teaching methods for discovering inner-peace, through prayer and meditation.

  • Children play on a UN armoured vehicle exhibited during 1995 VE Day 50th anniversary celebrations in London. Climbing on the top of the tank, the kids risk injury on the surface, with many sharp corners and places to fall from. In the week near the anniversary date of May 8, 1945, when the World War II Allies formally accepted the unconditional surrender of the armed forces of Germany and peace was announced to tumultuous crowds across European cities, the British still go out of their way to honour those sacrificed and the realisation that peace was once again achieved. Street parties now – as they did in 1945 – played a large part in the country’s patriotic well-being.

  • In a Brussels Flea Market, two curly-haired twin sisters wander about the cobbled square to play with a an empty push-chair at the Marché du Jeu de Balle, in the Marolles district of Belgium's capital city. In harsh sunlight the girls role-play at mothering, a gender conditioning that all children discover and these females are finding it natural to act as parents at such a young age. An antique doll sits looking in our direction, dressed in frilly clothes and all around is Chinese laquered furniture and other kids' toys like a hobby horse and a trike. At Place du Jeu de Balle Flea Market, you can find an extraordinary mix of household items, vintage clothes, crockery and furniture. This market is open daily from 6am to 2pm and is in the heart of the "Marolles" district, a working-class neighbourhood that was built in the 17th century...

  • A four year-old girl plays some sort of religious role-play game - perhaps an angel or the Virgin Mary - but what do see is her age of innocence as she wears an NHS blanket like a shawl over her head and draped over her arms like a Christian icon. Next to her is her 18 month-old baby brother who has learned to drink his warm milk from a plastic bottle, recently coming to like both breast and formula milk. Together they look at something that is interesting out of frame. The viewer looks up at the two siblings from a low angle to see them tall against the corniced ceiling of their South London home. From a personal documentary project entitled "Next of Kin" about the photographer's two children's early years spent in parallel universes. Model released.

  • A boy plays snowballs at night during heavy snow showers in central London - a rare event for an inner-city. Snowflakes are falling in large amounts settling on this street in Herne Hill, South London. The lad is in his element by going outdoors at night as the showers are falling everywhere about him. He hides behind a parked car at the kerbside, crouching low to avoid detection by his elder sister. Relishing the hide and seek game they're playing and the prospect of landing the snow as a direct hit makes him look mischievous and excited.

  • As the effects of Coronavirus continues to close down businesses and places of entertainment, and because of the governments's urge for home-working and avoidence of social gatherings, the West End of the UK's capital is unusually quieter than normal on a mid-week evening. On the day that the death toll reached 104 and that British schools would close indefinitely from the end of the week, Londoners walk past Wyndham's Theatre where Tom Stoppard's play, Leopoldstadt was playing, on 18th March 2020, in London, England.
