  • Smoke has been discovered in the basement of a shop in Market Street, Newport town centre, south Wales. We look down into a dark hole where two fire fighters - one of which is a senior officer, with two stripes on his helmet - have gone down a ladder to find the source of the smoke while wearing breathing apparatus (BA) as a precaution. While looking up they discuss the possibilities of a seat of fire elsewhere so they talk to their colleagues who crouch over the open floor of the business who dialled 999 for the fire brigade to attend this incident. It is 1984 and the firemens' equipment looks dated, during an era when uniform material was not of a high fire-retardant specification and nor were their helmets which went through important design changes.

  • Flight Lieutenant Dan Simmons of the elite 'Red Arrows', Britain's prestigious Royal Air Force aerobatic team, zips up his g-pants before climbing into his Hawk jet. G-pants counterac the effects of high gravity stresses that jet-fighters impose on the human body, automatically inflating and squeezing blood back to the thorax and head when blood drains towards the legs. As he attaches the zipper, he rests his straight right leg on a retractable step which helps him and his ground crew engineers to gain access to the cockpit, high above the ground. Hanging from another part of his airplane is his life-vest which he will wear around his neck, whilst in flight. Flight Lieutenant Simmons wears heavy-duty black boots which are regulation footwear for flying personnel and dressed in his red flying suit that is famous around the world.

  • Soon after setting sail from Miami, en-route to Cancun in Mexico, passengers of Carnival Cruise's Fun Ship Ecstasy liner are told to report on the top sun deck for the obligatory safety drill. Told to fetch their life vests from their respective cabins and suites, they have gathered at various muster points around the vessel to hear the crews' instructions about abandoning ship or the precuations needed to enter the water. We look down from a higher deck to see several dozen tourists on red vests, milling around awaiting the signal to return to their previous activities and entertainment. Operators like US-owned Carnival take these drills very seriously. Carnival was a pioneer in the concept of cheaper and shorter cruises. Its ships are known for their Las Vegas decor and entertainment. The cruise line calls its ships The Fun Ships and the MS Ecstasy is a Fantasy class cruise ship featuring two pools, whirlpools, a variety of dining options, nightclubs, a casino, and duty-free shopping. After Hurricane Katrina, she spent six months in New Orleans serving as quarters for refugees and relief workers. She suffered heavy damage in 1998 after the laundry room in the ship's stern caught fire damaging much of her stern and aft section.

  • Flight Lieutenant Simon Stevens, a pilot in the elite 'Red Arrows', Britain's prestigious Royal Air Force aerobatic team, makes a pre-flight check of his Hawk jet aircraft before a practice flight at RAF Scampton. Stevens and his fellow-aviators fly up to 6 times in winter training, learning new manoeuvres. The dangers of high-speed close formation flight makes health and safety precuations vital; the Ministry of Defence (MoD) and the Royal Air Force take working environments of their personnel seriously so pre-flight examination of aircraft happens before every sortie (flight). Performing the brief safety walk-around, Stevens bends at the waste to avoid the aeroplane's low aileron despite wearing a helmet, full flying suit, boots, life-vest and anti-g-pants. Flying still continues despite rainclouds in the gloomy Lincolnshire sky.

  • A few miles from the finish line, this long-distance runner has stopped in agony to lean against the walls beneath Tower Bridge during th London Marathon, England. Pushing against the solid wall and stretching his cramped leg muscles, he grimaces in pain as other runners speed past on their way completing their personal race. Pushed to his limits, this man needs to continue a few more Kilometres to claim his medal and to claim victory. But he still has to overcome the pain of an overworked body. When glycogen runs low, the body must then burn stored fat for energy, which does not burn as readily. When this happens, the runner will experience dramatic fatigue. This is called "hitting the wall".
