  • A lady protects herself from a mid-day summer summer sun with a brightly coloured parasol brolley. Oblivious to the viewer, she balances her lunch snack on her lap with toes pointing inwards, exposed to the hot solar rays. Meanwhile, she holds on tight to her eager pet poodle dog who is straining on its leash, wanting to go for a walk along the largely unpopulated promenade in this Devon resort, otherwise known as the English Riviera. But splashes of white paint (from the painted beach huts) have been left on the pavement. It is a horrible place to sit in the sun and her partner has left her alone to sit on her sun lounger, leaving the second chair vacant.

  • A holiday couple sit in deck-chairs to enjoy their chips wrapped in paper, the traditional way for eating fish and chips while at the seaside. The people scoff their food as a seagull stands patiently on the promenade wall waiting to scavenge from anything dropped or left behind. The bird's razor-sharp beak will cause injury and distress so the couple eat quickly before moving on.

Reflected on the puddles in beach sand, we see the colours of this iron structure on England's north west coast. Work began to build the pier in 1892. • A rather rotund man wearing a flat cap, a checked shirt under braces that keep his ample trousers up above his fat tummy, affectionately tickled his pet dog, a Whippet ,who stands still with two paws on his master's large leg. It is a bright day on the beach at Great Yarmouth in Norfolk, England. Bathers are running on the sand in the background and the man and his dog are content to watch the world go by from their promenade bench. Their is a great deal of trust and love these two have for each other - the gentleman having brought his dog on holiday to the seaside with him, rather than leave him with friends or in kennels. The dog is healthy, lithe and obviously has great speed in those muscular legs, vastly different to the man, whose frame is heavy and slow.

  • On a bright summer afternoon, a young spoiled girl shows-off by riding her favourite motorized Barbie trike along The Parade, the main promenade in the north Welsh seaside town of Llandudno, Wales. Wearing a bright pink helmet and travelling on the matching pink toy bike, she trundles along with the low-tide coast over her left shoulder. Barbie is a best-selling fashion doll launched in 1959 and produced by Mattel, Inc. The brand's merchandising reaches far and wide to countries and cultures around the world and this little girl seems to be the happiest on the beach, enjoying a generous present perhaps from a parent. She is the exact age that Mattel are targeting when they market these toys to accompany their dolls and accessories though the industry has come under fire for its controversial stereotyping of gender and subtle sexuality.

  • Holidaymakers are seated in deckchairs on the North Pier at Blackpool, England. As a man in the back row drinks deeply from a can and a lady next to him looks intently at life to the right, a more eccentric woman sleeps with a lacy handkerchief stretched across her face, pinned inside her sunglasses. Looking very English with embroidered or printed pattern of flowers. This northern seaside resort in the north-west of England is diverse in its transient holiday population whose behaviour can be routinely odd. Blackpool is the largest resort in the north of England and visited traditionally by working people from industrial towns and cities during the industrial revolution.

  • Four water-logged deckchairs have been abandoned on a wet Brighton's East Pier in East Sussex. It is Spring but the rain has driven away holidaymakers from this desolate and depressing spot from England's South coast seaside resort. We see a gloomy, grey sky and empty horizon with neither people, nor water activity but the stripes of the railings are echoed in the reflective wooden planks on this Victorian-era pier and of the fabric on the deckchairs. We wonder who might have sat on these chairs and where they might be now? This landscape might be the antithesis of a holiday poster that repels rather than attracts tourists to this location.

In the foreground a father reads his tabloid newspaper as his toddler sleeps contentedly in its pushchair, a dummy in the mouth and a blanket scross its body to keep out a chilly breeze. Further back another man stands waiting for his partner with a baby, also asleep in the buggy. And thirdly, a male pushes his daughter in pink up a small slope on a bicycle that uses stablizers. It is a busy scene on Paignton seafront on the Devon coast. Elsewhere children and adults of all ages walk along the esplanade enjoying an overcast and windy day on holiday. This theatrical scene is about the ideal father and the family unit.

Wearing bikinis one is not asleep but eyeing-up some of the alpha-male specimens on show wearing only red shorts. Meanwhile, holidaymakers walk past with ice-creams. It is a bright scene and obviously a busy time for these safety experts when tourists forever get themselves into danger in the sea and surf. • Sea view telescope on West Cliff Promenade that overlooks the Port of Ramsgate, on 8th January 2019, in Ramsgate, Kent, England. The Port of Ramsgate has been identified as a 'Brexit Port' by the government of Prime Minister Theresa May, currently negotiating the UK's exit from the EU. Britain's Department of Transport has awarded to an unproven shipping company, Seaborne Freight, to provide run roll-on roll-off ferry services to the road haulage industry between Ostend and the Kent port - in the event of more likely No Deal Brexit. In the EU referendum of 2016, people in Kent voted strongly in favour of leaving the European Union with 59% voting to leave and 41% to remain.

  • Ducking under the falling spray from a giant wave, a passer-by experience the force of nature from a storm off the coasts of southern England - here at the Port of Dover, Kent. As the water hits the sea defence wall, the seaside town is battered by southerly winds that bring with them huge breakers across the promenade. Adventurous and foolhardy people brave these conditions and stay for as long as possible at the railings then jump out at the last moment before getting doused in salt spray. This man carries on walking and thinks that by bending down, the sea will pass overhead.

  • The WW1 war memorial with the Latin Pro Patria inscription on the main Le Promenade street, on 22nd May, 2017, in Lagrasse, Languedoc-Rousillon, south of France. Pro Patria is a line from the Roman lyrical poet Horace's Odes, translated as: "It is sweet and proper to die for the fatherland." Lagrasse is listed as one of France's most beautiful villages and lies on the famous Route 20 wine route in the Basses-Corbieres region dating to the 13th century.

  • A memorial has been placed where murdered school boy Damilola Taylor died at Hordle Promenade, North Peckham Estate, London, UK. Were we to ignore this place where someone's life ended, the victim would just be an anonymous statistic but flowers are left to die too and touching poems and dedications are written by family and loved-ones. One reads: ?May your sweet little soul rest in perfect Peace/?Evil kids has took your life away (but your spirit is always with us).? From a project about makeshift shrines: Britons have long installed memorials in the landscape: Statues and monuments to war heroes, Princesses and the socially privileged. But nowadays we lay wreaths to those who die suddenly - ordinary folk killed as pedestrians, as drivers or by alcohol, all celebrated on our roadsides and in cities with simple, haunting roadside remberences..
