  • Stripped of their feathers, plucked ducks await the next stage during a family Foie Gras business in French Alsace. The Kessler family live on a farm in the quiet village of Boofzheim in Alsace, France. Their business is producing Foie Gras and they raise force-fed ducks near the German border region. The youngest member is daughter Mireille wearing a blood-stained apron. She has cut the throat of a duck, draining the body and especially the liver of blood. After tapping the head with a knife to render the animal unconscious, she stands in a pool of blood from other birds which stains the courtyard floor. On the left, her parents and grandmother are plucking the feathers from newly-killed carcasses which are strung up on a special rack for this purpose. France produces and consumes the most Foie Gras in Europe using the French Gavage method of forcing ducks or geese to consume vast quatities of corn mash down the esophagus two weeks before slaughter.

  • Graffiti sprayed on a rendered brick wall proclaims that a higher authority 'Can't evict our ideas'. This message of resistance by the underdogs of a moral majority appears on a part of wasteland in the Yorkshire city of Bradford, where the residents of an estate near the city centre have been forcibly removed to make space for a new development. Before their migration, the anonymous, downtrodden people were desperate enough to write this piece of anarchical philosophy that might be seen as a metaphor for a class war against the establishment by The People; the working classes otherwise known in Marxist ideology, as the Proletariat - a kind of thought from the (Orwellian) novel Nineteen Eighty-Four, by George Orwell.

  • Decorator and part-time chimney sweep Alan Squires prepares to apply another coat of emulsion paint to the exterior walls of a cottage called Burnside in the tiny hamlet of Hallin, Waternish, on the Isle of Skye, Scottish Highlands. With his shadow looming large on the newly-painted off-white pebbledash that is rendered a warm orange in the low sunlight, Alan walks with his long roller after a day's decorating in this beautiful place near Dunvegan. Alan is an Englishman who came to Skye in 1987 for the community spirit. "everybody knows everybody' he says though admits that southerners come from the south in search of an idyllic lifestyle but harsh winters often send them back to warmer climates. Alain's fresh paint therefore needs to dry before winter weather blows in from the Atlantic. Image taken for the 'UK at Home' book project published 2008.

  • Beneath the Swiss Re building (aka the Gherkin) is the sculpture artwork entitled 'Site Of The Fall: Study of the renaissance garden: Action 180: At 9:15 am Sunday 28th May 1967' by Reza Aramesh, on 29th July 2020, in the City of London, England. This piece of art is one of a series of 12 sculptures that form the body of work titled ‘Site of the Fall – Study of a Renaissance Garden’. From research on reportage images of the Vietnam war, a single composition was selected, the image of which has been reconstructed through a process of rendering based on live subjects. Hand carved Carrara marble depicts the subject as larger than life. The plinth is a site-specific design to communicate with the environment of where it’s situated.

  • A volunteer casualty is rescued by medics and firefighters during a London Fire Brigade's 'extrication' team's demonstration with the Vehicle and Operator Services Agency (VOSA) on how firefighters rescue passengers by cutting open with dedicated cutting equipment a stretch limousine in London's Covent Garden Piazza. Highlighting the dangers of hiring illegal luxury or novelty cars, this vehicle was seized last year with many mechanical defects rendering it unsafe for those inside with limited exit doors. Of 358 cars stopped in March 2012, 27 were seized and 232 given prohibitions. This scenario is a simulation and therefore reproduces the reality of an emergency, using real emergency services personnel and equipment. Casualties are volunteers and none were injured in the making of this photograph.

  • Fishermen from the Maldives haul aboard a yellow fin tuna to the deck of a dhoni boat in the Indian Ocean. The tuna has been swimming across the Indian Ocean non-stop since birth but after being dragged up with hooks, the 50kg fish will be clubbed to death by smashing its skull with repeated blows. Next it will be gutted efficiently with sharp knives and immediately plunged into ice containers to cool the flesh, reducing the risk of self-deteriorating flushed blood which renders it unfit for consumption under EU law (its live internal core temperature is 40 degrees centigrade). When as many fish have been caught before dark using hand and line method, rather than nets, the boat presses on to the processing factory at Himmafushi where they're filleted and boxed for export to Europe and in particular, for UK supermarkets like Sainsbury's.

  • Firefighter from the London Fire Brigade's 'extrication' team using a using a Holmatro dedicated cutter to give a demonstration on how firefighters rescue passengers by cutting open a stretch limousine in London's Covent Garden Piazza.

  • The ever-turning London Eye is seen over the River Thames with the Palace of Westminster and Parliament beyond. The wheel is blurred after a minute's exposure and the blue sky behind renders evening as a romantic cityscape backdrop. We see Big Ben in the Tower of Westminster and Parliament just as they have become floodlit and the stand out set against the other buildings, very easily recognised as the iconic London landmarks known around the world. The Eye, or as it was known in 2000, the Millennium Wheel, was designed by architects David Blian, Julia Barfield, Malcolm Cook, Mark Sparrowhawk, Steven Chilton and Nic Bailey, and carries 32 sealed, air-conditioned passenger capsules which rotate at 0.26 metres (0.85 feet) per second (about 0.9 km/h or 0.5 mph) so that one revolution takes about 30 minutes.

  • A fisherman from the Maldives clubs to death a yellow fin tuna on the deck of a dhoni boat in the Indian Ocean. Using a handmade instrument of death, carved from beach flotsam, the man raises his hands to again bring the club down on the dying fish whose skull has already been smashed by repeated blows.
