  • The Arch of Germanicus, an ancient Roman arch in Saintes, Charente-Maritime in France. It was built in 18 or 19AD by a rich citizen of the town (then known as Mediolanum Santonum), C. Julius Rufus, and dedicated to the emperor Tiberius, his son Drusus Julius Caesar, and his adoptive son Germanicus. It has two bays and was originally sited over the terminus of the Roman road from Lyon to Saintes. On the proposal of Prosper Mérimée in 1843 it was moved fifteen metres during works on quays along the river, and it was restored in 1851.

  • High up on the buttresses of Westminster Abbey in central London during the mid-90s, new white Portland and Caen stone replaces the blackened materials of old - discoloured after a hundred years of pollution from the capital's industrial revolution and traffic fumes. Portland stone is a limestone from the Tithonian stage of the Jurassic period quarried on the Isle of Portland, Dorset. Westminster Abbey, is a large, mainly Gothic church, in the City of Westminster, London, United Kingdom, located just to the west of the Palace of Westminster. It is the traditional place of coronation and burial site for English, later British and later still (and currently) monarchs of the Commonwealth realms. The abbey is a Royal Peculiar and briefly held the status of a cathedral from 1540 to 1550.

In afternoon light, a lady in a stars and stripes shirt stands arms behind her back admiring the lovingly restored polished twin-engine bomber, the most heavily armed airplane of the second world war used for high and low-level bombing, strafing, photoreconnaissance, submarine patrol and fighter. Close to a million populate the mass fly-in over the week, a pilgrimage worshipping all aspects of flight. The event annually generates $85 million in revenue over a 25 mile radius from Oshkosh. King Charles I amassed one of the most extraordinary art collections of his age, acquiring works by some of the finest artists of the past – Titian, Mantegna, Holbein, Dürer – and commissioning leading contemporary artists such as Van Dyck and Rubens. Following the his execution in 1649, the king's collection was sold off and scattered across Europe. Many works were retrieved during the Restoration, others now form the core of museums such as the Louvre and the Prado. This show reunites the greatest masterpieces of this magnificent collection for the first time.

  • Queen Elizabeth's Royal Yacht Britannia is moored at the quayside at Portsmouth, England. With pendants blowing in the breeze, its pristine paintwork shining in sunlight, the boat awaits its royal passengers for another official tour or voyage abroad. In the background is Lord Nelson's flagship museum, HMS Victory. Her Majesty's Yacht Britannia was the former Royal Yacht of the British monarch, Queen Elizabeth II. She was the 83rd such vessel since the restoration of King Charles II in 1660. She is the second Royal yacht to bear the name, the first being the famous racing cutter built for The Prince of Wales in 1893. Following Labour's victory on 1 May 1997 it was announced that the vessel would be retired and no replacement would be built. She is now permanently moored as an exhibition ship at Ocean Terminal, Leith, Edinburgh, Scotland.

  • The day after its catastrophic blaze, firefighters continue to assess fire damage from their ladders, to the Queen's official residence at Windsor Castle, on 20th November 1992, in London, England. The most northerly corner of this old building that caught fire in a private chapel on the first floor of the north-east wing. Spreading quickly, damaging St George's Hall, which is often used for banquets. In all, one hundred rooms were damaged in the fire and intense public debate was sparked about whether the taxpayer should foot the repair bill, as the castle is owned by the British Government and not the Royal Family. But the Queen agreed to meet 70% of the costs, and opened Buckingham Palace to the public to generate extra funds. The £40m restoration took five years. Windsor is the largest inhabited castle in the world and partly dates to the time of the Norman King William the Conquerer.

  • High above the streets of London's Holborn, we see the sign for the Olde Cock Tavern, one of the city's old inns from the 16th century. Ye Olde Cock Tavern is a public house on London's Fleet Street. Originally built before the 17th century, it was rebuilt, including the interior (which is thought to include work by carver Grinling Gibbons) on the other side of the road in the 1880s when a branch of the Bank of England was built where it stood. However, in the 1990s a fire broke out and destroyed many of the original ornaments, and the building has since gone through a restoration using photographs. It has been frequented by Samuel Pepys, Alfred Tennyson and Charles Dickens

  • A portrait of an executive from the Baltic Exchange holding a framed photo of what the trading institution before it was wrecked by the IRA terrorist bomb nearby in St Mary Axe in the City of London. On 10 April 1992 at 9:20 pm, the façade of the Exchange's offices at 30 St Mary Axe was partially demolished and the rest of the building was extensively damaged in the Provisional Irish Republican Army bomb attack. The one-ton bomb was contained in a large white truck and consisted killed three people. Too heavily damaged, a full restoration of the premises was ruled out and the hall was completely razed in 1998. The Baltic Exchange is the world's only independent source of maritime market information for the trading and settlement of physical and derivative contracts.
