  • A young deer lies dead beside a busy highway on a road near Fairchild Air Force Base, Spokane, Washington State. Very recently run-over but seemingly unharmed, this animal has head injuries and died immediately from a collision with a passing vehicle, such as this heavy articulated lorry which blurrs past this location. This is forested area and the deer's natural habitat but too often wildlife in its natural surroundings violently meets the modern human environment and the animal comes of worst. As a result of the death, the roadkill was taken by members of a US Air Force survival course at their nearby facility and so it formed an unscheduled extra lesson in preparing venison for the pot that night (see Corbis image entitled 'US Air Force survival instructors with recent roadkill').

  • A young boy edges through a gap between some railings and the end of a fallen tree trunk that has fallen across a footpath. The child is on his way to nursery school and the night before strong winds brought down trees in the south London area and cause disruption to transport infrastructure. It is an adventure for this child who isn't bothered in the slightest at this minor inconvenience to his journey, a route he takes with his mother or father every morning. Pushing his bike first, he takes care not to hurt himself on the jagged timber

  • Standing with a recently-killed deer run-over on a nearby highway, members of a special US Air Force (USAF) survival course (see Corbis image 42-18212808) pose by the gutted carcass of their animal in a forest near their facility at Fairchild AFB, Spokane, Washington State. These tough-looking men host visiting air crew whose flying careers depend on passing this rigorous week of escape and evasion instruction. Should they land in enemy territory for example, they will need all the skills learned here to survive possibly weeks in the wilderness so trapping and preparing fresh meat for human consumption is of paramount importance. Here the teachers stand around the venison which is strung up on a branch, its intestines and organs already removed by a hunting knife. They wear camouflage uniforms, face paint to look vicious, threatening and heartless. .

  • Tourists lunge over the original 4th century start/finish line in the stadium at Olympia. Hercules is said to have paced out the 600 Greek feet - or Stadion - from which we get the word 'stadium. On the grassy bank in the background is where the seating once accommodated the many sporting pilgrims who travelled to this place from all over Greece during agreed warfare truces in the weeks of the Olympic festival. The 29th Olympics came home to Greece in 2004 and the birthplace of athletics, amid the woodland of ancient Olympia where for 1,100 continuous years, the ancients held their pagan festival of sport and debauchery. The modern games share many characteristics with its ancient counterpart. Corruption, politics and cheating interfered then as it does now and the 2004 Athens Olympiad echoed both what was great and horrid about the past..

From the top we see prizes for Reserve Champions then those for 1st prize, then second, third and runners-up at the very bottom. Such accolades are won and lost by fractions of a second but their importance is remembered for years afterwards as young girls desperately practice to improve their equestrian skills. A huge commitment is needed by the girls and their parents who spend great deals of money and time for these treasured prizes which can be won or lost by fractions of seconds or single points. Those that fail to win go home feeling empty-handed or perhaps cheated out of victory and glory. Those who win hang them on bedroom walls for years to come.

  • A Polish hiking route sign on a spruce tree where others have been badly affected by the European spruce beetle, in Dolina Mietusia, a hiking route in the Polish Tatra National Park, on 18th September 2019, in Dolina Mietusia, near Zakopane, Malopolska, Poland. The European spruce beetle (Ips typographus) is one of 116 bark beetles species in Poland which is killing thousands of spruces. The insect's population can grow rapidly via wind and snow etc. which eventually leaves a gap in the landscape, thereby changing the forest floor's ecology.

  • A Weightwatchers club of ladies all hoping to lose a few Pounds line up at the scales during one of their weekly sessions in London. With her hands on generous hips, a woman wearing a red dress stands as a leader of the evening makes her calculations. Much depends on the womens' success to reach their individual targets - the ethos in Weightwatchers being to reward the good. As they say of their ProPoints plan: ".. it is a fantastic counting system that allows you to eat what you like, when you like, until you reach your daily total. It guides you to make healthier food choices, eating more of the things that are good for you and for weight loss, and less of the things that aren't."
