  • Young travellers try out a Shetland pony at the ancient annual Priddy Sheep (and horse) fair in Somerset, England. Leading round the horse on a rope, the traveller boys parade around a field on the outskirts of the village. Set in the Mendip Hills, in the south-western English county of Somerset, the Priddy Sheep fair is host to an odd mix of farmers and travellers (commonly and incorrectly known as gypsies). In this field set aside purely for travellers, many with West Country accents but also with nearby Welsh and Irish too, deals are done with a traditional spit on the hand and a smacking of palms, selling a pony to another family. The Priddy Sheep Fair moved from the city of Wells in 1348 because of the Black Death.

  • Soon after setting sail from Miami, en-route to Cancun in Mexico, passengers of Carnival Cruise's Fun Ship Ecstasy liner are told to report on the top sun deck for the obligatory safety drill. Told to fetch their life vests from their respective cabins and suites, they have gathered at various muster points around the vessel to hear the crews' instructions about abandoning ship or the precuations needed to enter the water. We look down from a higher deck to see several dozen tourists on red vests, milling around awaiting the signal to return to their previous activities and entertainment. Operators like US-owned Carnival take these drills very seriously. Carnival was a pioneer in the concept of cheaper and shorter cruises. Its ships are known for their Las Vegas decor and entertainment. The cruise line calls its ships The Fun Ships and the MS Ecstasy is a Fantasy class cruise ship featuring two pools, whirlpools, a variety of dining options, nightclubs, a casino, and duty-free shopping. After Hurricane Katrina, she spent six months in New Orleans serving as quarters for refugees and relief workers. She suffered heavy damage in 1998 after the laundry room in the ship's stern caught fire damaging much of her stern and aft section.

Weary Londoners sit waiting for the doors to close and the hot air to seal them inside the small space, men and women press against each other in a claustrophobic journey along the Central Line. The Central line is a London Underground line, coloured red on the tube map. It is a deep-level "tube" line, running east-west across London, and, at 76 km (47 mi). Incorporated in 1891 it is today the longest Underground line and also the busiest with around 260 million passengers a year.

  • An ad poster with the actor Andile Gumbi as Simba in the Lion King is on the door of a central London telephone kiosk for the Disney production. The man in blue walking past is wearing his taxi driver's license badge around his neck and has perhaps taken a break from his job driving around the capital to pick up an Evening Standard newspaper and some sandwiches from the Pret a Manger food chain. The Lion King, the musical of the Disney cartoon has been running in London's West End since October 1999, breaking its own box office record, taking more than £34m during 2010 - £2m more than the previous year - and ending the year with its best ever week of ticket sales. Big musicals are so far defying the economic gloom, and theatre in general is proving surprisingly resilient. More than 800,000 saw this Disney musical cartoon in its 11th year in West End

After a long campaign by locals, Lambeth have gone ahead closed the library's doors for the last time the day before, because they say, cuts to their budget mean millions must be saved. A gym will replace the working library and while some of the 20,000 books on shelves will remain, no librarians will be present to administer it.
