During a time-exposure and partially-lit by the headlights and spotlights of an airfield emergency vehicle, we see the giant numbers 27 that landing pilots will see from a mile away as they descend towards the airport's threshold. The numbers relate to the compass bearing that the line of the runway takes: In this case 270 degrees from north and has a parallel southern twin.   • Seen from the cockpit of another Hawk of the elite 'Red Arrows', Britain's Royal Air Force aerobatic team before an In-Season Practice (ISP) training flight near their base at RAF Scampton. Seen through the explosive Plexiglass cockpit of a tenth plane, we see forward into deep blue sky as two sets of aerobatic pilots steer their machines from a crossover manoeuvre, their organic white smoke pouring from their jet pipes to emphasize their paths through the air. In front of a local crowd at the airfield the team work their way through a 25-minute series of display manoeuvres that are loved by thousands at summer air shows. After some time off, spare days like this are used to hone their manual aerobatic and piloting skills before re-joining the air show circuit. Since 1965 they've flown over 4,000 shows in 52 countries.

From this surface, $38 million F/A-18s fighters take off the ship's deck and into the air from a standing position. The angled flight decks of the carriers use a CATOBAR arrangement to operate aircraft, with steam catapults and arrestor wires for launch and recovery. The Truman is the largest and newest of the US Navy's fleet of new generation carriers, a 97,000 ton floating city with a crew of  5,137, 650 are women.

  • The designer and couturier Joe Casely Hayford in his Shoreditch studio in 1997. ..From the early eighties Joe styled and designed the stage clothing for many seminal bands such as The Clash and U2 whilst simultaneously working on his eponymous brand for men and women. His wide and varied career has included being the first designer to collaborate with Top Shop in 1993. from 2005-2008 Joe Casely-Hayford was Creative Director of Gieves & Hawkes, during which time he contributed to the re-positioning of the 200 year old Savile Row house. In January 2006 his new Gieves collection was launched on the runway in Paris for Men's Fashion Week, creating a precedent for a heritage Savile Row brand, and credited as a major step in bringing the illustrious company into the 21st century.  Joe Casely-Hayford was appointed an OBE - Officer of the Order of the British Empire, for services to the fashion industry, in the Queen's Birthday Honours List, published on 16 June 2007.

  • High up in the picture, two employees (one in traditional Arab clothes, the other in western dress) of Bahrain International Airport stand on the edge of a passenger 'air bridge' to oversee the departure of an airliner at Bahrain International Airport as it is pushed back by an unseen airport vehicle. It is night time and the ramp (or aircraft parking tarmac) is illuminated by yellow artificial light with the bridge itself, lit my overhead fluorescent tubes that give a blue-green tint above the mens' heads who watch the nose of a departing airliner. It is slowly taken backwards on its way to the runway take-off  position with its passengers on-board. We see only the fuselage, wings and part of its engine cowlings but not the undercarriage wheels, nor the ground itself. The men look as if they are floating in mid-air, being disembodied from the rest of the airfield's equipment.

  • The Hawk jet aircraft of the elite 'Red Arrows', Britain's prestigious Royal Air Force aerobatic team, are lined up at RAF Akrotiri, Cyprus as members of the team's ground crew step away from the aircraft that they respectively look after. From a low angle we see a wide landscape looking over the taxi-way markings that direct military airplanes. The Red Arrows aircraft are a deep red colour that stand out against the horizon in an identical line. It is a wide expanse of road surface, the yellow centre-lines are for the benefit of pilots who need guidance for parking areas after landing, or leaving towards the departing runway on the southern part of the Cypriot Mediterranean island. With the Red Arrows, the nine taxiing jets all peel off in unison to and from the parking area and these lines are vital for this technique.

  • Near the end of the military runway at RAF Mildenhall in Suffolk England, a road sign warns of low-flying aircraft near the base which is populated by the United States Air Force Refuelling Wing. Beneath the triangular sign is a locally made makeshift advertisement for CJ's, a nearby cafe. It is summer and the shrubs are green with white flowers to the side. The sign itself has become discoloured with green algae after being rained on over successive wet weather days. In the UK, the Highway Code for road-users lists this warning sign (always triangular) as "Low-flying aircraft or sudden aircraft noise."
