  • Reaching out to a tower of scaffolding, high above the skyline of North London, a member of a company of abseiling construction scaffold workers make use of circus skills. Suspended with ropes, carabinas and a seat harness normally used by mountaineers, this man is wearing a safety helmet and blue overalls and his dirty gloved hand is about to make contact with yellow iron work as his colleague looks skyward, already tethered to the reinforced structure. A 60s tower block is immediately behind and suburban houses and streets are below. We see a man about to make contact with a place of safety, reaching out to his destination while spread across London's skies. Lit by flash, this picture is confusing because the viewer sees a false sense of size and scale between the iron work and the flats behind.

  • Flight Lieutenant Simon Stevens, a pilot in the elite 'Red Arrows', Britain's prestigious Royal Air Force aerobatic team, makes a pre-flight check of his Hawk jet aircraft before a practice flight at RAF Scampton. Stevens and his fellow-aviators fly up to 6 times in winter training, learning new manoeuvres. The dangers of high-speed close formation flight makes health and safety precuations vital; the Ministry of Defence (MoD) and the Royal Air Force take working environments of their personnel seriously so pre-flight examination of aircraft happens before every sortie (flight). Performing the brief safety walk-around, Stevens bends at the waste to avoid the aeroplane's low aileron despite wearing a helmet, full flying suit, boots, life-vest and anti-g-pants. Flying still continues despite rainclouds in the gloomy Lincolnshire sky.

  • Standing in their cradles are three members of a National Grid Live-line electricity cable crew, protected in a conductive cage beneath the electricy cables that they maintaining. We see the sagging cables stretching to distant electricity pylons and the three human figures standing like astonauts in their protective cradles. Huge structure of girders and relays are behind them and they wear safety clothing allowing them to work comfortably inside the electrical field at close range with gloved hands. National Grid Electricity Transmission plc owns and operates the National Grid high-voltage electricity transmission network in England and Wales.National Grid plc is a United Kingdom based utilities company which also operates in other countries, principally in the United States.

  • A detail of constrution safety netting the covers the stonework and masonry in the former Smithfield meat market that is awaiting future redevelopment, on 20th November 2019, at Smithfield in the City of London, England. In March 2015, the Museum of London revealed plans to vacate its Barbican site and move into the General Market Building. The cost of the move is estimated to be in the region of £70 million and, if funding can be achieved, would be complete by 2021. There has been a market on this location since the Bartholomew Fair was established in 1133 by Augustinian friars.

  • Safety and rescue equipment belonging to the London Fire Brigade's 'extrication' team who gave a demonstration on how firefighters rescue passengers by cutting open with dedicated cutting equipment a stretch limousine in London's Covent Garden Piazza. Highlighting the dangers of hiring illegal luxury or novelty cars, this vehicle was seized last year with many mechanical defects rendering it unsafe for those inside with limited exit doors. Of 358 cars stopped in March 2012, 27 were seized and 232 given prohibitions. This scenario is a simulation and therefore reproduces the reality of an emergency, using real emergency services personnel and equipment. Casualties are volunteers and none were injured in the making of this photograph.

Oxy-fuel welding (commonly called oxyacetylene welding, oxy welding, or gas welding in the U.S.) and oxy-fuel cutting are processes that use fuel gases and oxygen to weld and cut metals, respectively.

  • An urban tree is protected from a construction site by blue hoarding panels in the City of London. The landscape looks both incongruous and disturbing to the eye with the blue hoarding and its red safety light that glows in the daylight. The carefully planted tree continues to grow in situ on a pavement split between paving stones and a worn grass verge in the heart of the capital's financial district otherwise known as the Square Mile, after its circling Roman wall..

  • There is golden light across this narrow stretch of river, yellow flowers are on the bank and in late golden sunlight, two boys paddle upstream in their Indian canoe on the River Thames near the village of Shillingford, England. Lazily they plunge their paddles into the calm, clear blue waters of this majestic river whose source rises in deepest Gloucestershire to its industrial estuary in the English Channel 215 miles (346 km) away. But here in Oxfordshire, it is an idyllic scene of innocent childhood on calm rural waters in a beautiful and tranquil setting, on an English summer afternoon. The boys don't appear to be wearing life vests nor safety equipment but propel their craft forwards against the current with confidence.

  • Four energetic party goers are dressed up as eccentric 70s punks at a Halloween event in Adrenaline Village, Battersea, London UK. Taken from below them with flash the group is in a dark club environment, their make-up is authentic-looking complete with hair gel and mascara. They wear tights and a girl on the left has safety pins while being licked on the neck by a man. Another is wearing a Union Jack sleeveless T-shirt while one person is looking directly at the camera. They might look authentic but it has been 20 years since Punk was the huge youth culture of the day.

  • A theatrical joke about bureaucracy between French and British comedians at an event to mark the opening of the Channel Tunnel produces this quirky scene where each country's officials are seated at a long table, dressed in British flags, to symbolise the controls on human traffic that will soon pass through the tunnel beneath the sea between England and France, the first physical link between these two land masses since the Ice Age. Wearing smart uniforms, French immigration police and Gendarmes sit among British customs and immigration officials who, rather comically wear yellow hard hats because Health and Safety laws make the wearing of protective headgear compulsory on construction sites. A frontier control point notice stands for the benefit of viewers who might otherwise be guessing what is going on.

  • A life belt hangs on a cross-shaped post, all painted a vivid red as the sun sinks down below the horizon and beyond the historic Bamburgh Castle, in Northumberland, northern England. Lit with a strong off-camera flash we see the slightly blurred device, invented for saving lives at sea, with a ghostly corona around its form, against a fading blue sky. The rope dangles near the ground, around which the grasses of the dunes blow in a faint breeze. Only the foreground is lit by the flash and the distant castle building and shoreline. We see such equipment and imagine safety and rescue and also jeopardy and hazards at sea. Supplied for those taking risks and making stupid decisions makes these items essential on coastal areas.

  • In the privacy of her own country home, an elderly French lady is about to have eye-drops administered by her local doctor in the Vosges town of Ban de Laveline. Holding her eyelids up with a thumb in preparation of giving the woman the necessary medicine, the young health professional reaches for his equipment and the lady is left looking rather startled and uncomfortable for a few moments as her eye stares wildly. We are in her small cottage on the outskirts of town and the doctor is making his rounds to various patients unable to attend his daily surgery. The lady wears a colourful apron, typical of French working people, and is possibly in her seventies, living alone with only kind neighbours to ensure her safety. ....http://www.france-voyage.com/en/

  • Gathered on the Docklands Light Railway track, a group of police investigators and health and safety experts stand beneath the devastation and wreckage caused by the IRA's docklands bomb on 10th February 1996. Office windows have been blown out and shattered glass lies everywhere making these workplaces unusable for many months afterwards. We see the men under the tall buildings looking tiny in comparison to the chaotic aftermath of this enormous explosion the day before. The bombing marked the end of a 17-month IRA ceasefire during which Irish, British and American leaders worked for a political solution to the troubles in Northern Ireland. 2 people were killed in the half-tonne lorry bomb blast which caused an estimated £85 million damage.

  • A makeshift warning sign made from plywood is roughly painted with letters declaring 'oil on beach.' It hangs on some silver railings on an unknown beach in England. The sand is strewn with sharp stones and litter and coloured (colored) a dirty brown stain high up on the shore line and more worrying, a little more distant, a father cuddles his baby child on a towel surrounded by possessions such as a cool box and the seaside toys of a happy family holiday (vacation). We look down on to this scene in disbelief that a parent lies down on such polluted terrain when health and safety considerations might have closed the entire esplanade.

  • During the turnround of the British Airways jet aircraft, a refueller checks the safety of heavy fuel nozzles that connect from his bowser truck on the apron at Heathrow Airport's Terminal 5. He is ensuring the correct plugging of the connections as some 109 tons of Jet A1 aviation fuel flow at a rate of 3,000 litres a minute which is being uplifted into the wing tanks of this Boeing 747-300, a typical quantity of extra fuel for this aeroplane bound for Los Angeles. From writer Alain de Botton's book project "A Week at the Airport: A Heathrow Diary" (2009). .
