  • The shadows of tree branches across the boarded-up entrance of All Hallows, an inner-city church on Copperfield Street, on 30th January 2018, in the south London borough of Southwark, England. All Hallows Church Southwark was designed by George Gilbert Scott Junior and built in 1879-80 in Copperfield Street south of the river. The church suffered bomb damage on two occasions in WW2, in addition to being gutted by a landmine where it remained a relative ruin. It was not until 1957 that any attempt was made to salvage the bombed church, but due to the poor state of the surviving remains, the main structure and northern parts of the building had to be demolished.

  • Using the Ball Mat Flooring System, below the flooring of economy class, a cargo handler manhandles a container of air freight into position in the hold of a Sri Lankan Airlines Airbus A340 that is about to depart from Male, the capital of the Republic of the Maldives to Colombo. Inside the aluminium box is fresh tuna fish, freshly caught in the Indian Ocean and bound for the supermarkets of the EU and in particular, the UK whose insatiable appetite for fresh, perishable and sustainable foodstuffs make this fast and efficient form of transport important to speedy delivery. Every square inch is accounted for but as well as passengers' baggage, the cramped spaces beneath this modern airliner store loaded revenue-rich cargo though specially-pressurised and heated compartments accommodate live animals.

  • Possessions and rubbish collects outside a repossessed Victorian terraced house in south London. In the foreground we see a For Sale sign strapped on the brick wall by local estate agents Burnet Ware & Graves in Herne Hill, Lambeth SE24. The front bay window has been sealed up with plyboard to stop squatters gaining entrance and the domestic remnants of evicted owners who have perhaps defaulted on their mortgage is thrown on the path - a scene of domestic poverty. As a result of the 1987 a stock market collapse, the UK economy experienced a downturn resulting in public services suffering a reduction, including the loss of owners' homes. The recession of the early 1990s describes the period of economic downturn affecting much of the world in the late 1980s and early 1990s.

  • A middle-aged woman walks along a gloomy street in Toxteth, Liverpool, England. Passing a boarded-up greengrocer that probably once served the local community, the lady strides past its sealed window and the name of its past owner, obviously proud of her business' quality in an otherwise run-down area. Toxteth saw serious rioting in 1981 and the legacy of social-deprivation ever since meant a breakdown of law and order. Used as the epitome of poor inner-city Britain, it is located to the south of the city and is synonymous with social issues, degradation and poverty with some of the most underprivileged families in the UK. Recently many streets in the worst areas have been demolished including a threat to Beatle Ringo Starr's childhood home.

  • The ever-turning London Eye is seen over the River Thames with the Palace of Westminster and Parliament beyond. The wheel is blurred after a minute's exposure and the blue sky behind renders evening as a romantic cityscape backdrop. We see Big Ben in the Tower of Westminster and Parliament just as they have become floodlit and the stand out set against the other buildings, very easily recognised as the iconic London landmarks known around the world. The Eye, or as it was known in 2000, the Millennium Wheel, was designed by architects David Blian, Julia Barfield, Malcolm Cook, Mark Sparrowhawk, Steven Chilton and Nic Bailey, and carries 32 sealed, air-conditioned passenger capsules which rotate at 0.26 metres (0.85 feet) per second (about 0.9 km/h or 0.5 mph) so that one revolution takes about 30 minutes.

  • Peering through a hole in the huge metal door of an old Victorian tunnel, two children stand on the place where a railway once emerged from this brick entrance - a link between nearby Dulwich and the Crystal Palace. Now the London Wildlife Trust maintains this once-wild wood at Sydenham, South London, England, which has reverted to forest again, 40 years after (one of the first the electrified railways) line fell silent. The brother and sister look through to see if there is light at the end of this tunnel but it has long been bricked up, sealed to deter vandals and danger to all. It is Autumn and the leaves on the beech and oak trees are about to fall, adding to the already organic deep forest floor. From a personal documentary project entitled "Next of Kin" about the photographer's two children's early years spent in parallel universes. Model released

  • The Monument and modern architecture in the City of London. This old pillar commemorates the great Fire of London in 1666, a date sealed in the capital's history because it burned the central parts of the city of London, gutting the medieval area inside the old Roman city wall. It consumed 13,200 houses, 87 parish churches, St Paul's Cathedral and most of the buildings of the City authorities. It is estimated to have destroyed the homes of 70,000 of the City's 80,000 inhabitants.

  • Office lights illuminate the 800 foot tower at 1 Canada Square, Canary Wharf in London Docklands, one of the tallest buildings in Europe. Designed by the Argentine architect César Pelli, construction was completed in 1991. Identifiable from a great distance as an obelisk-shaped tower with its aircraft warning light flashing on top, this building is a monument to 1980s-style capitalism...From the 'Windows' series. ..Since Microsoft brought about the name Windows to brand the PC computing user interface, I have taken it upon myself to collect and henceforth, add to - a group of pictures about the original window, long after the original word was hijacked by a man called Gates. More will be added during 2007...Windows have been around for a long time - the Romans invaders even had a glass substance that sealed the chilly British air - and stench - from their sensitive Roman noses. ..Nowadays, I'm attracted to the labelling and messaging that becomes attached to the inside or outside of panes of glass, as if they are urban, public post-it notes for anything an individual wishes to share or advertise. Sometimes the message can be a warning, a cry for help or just an accidental freak of mis-spelling that somehow creates a different meaning altogether to that intended. ..

  • "7lbs 13oz." On a labour ward at Kings College Hospital, London, a new-born baby girl has been temporarily separated from her mother and placed uncomfortably in a small weighing dish, minutes after taking her first breaths, to record her birth-weight, recording in old imperial pounds and ounces rather than modern metric grams and kilo units. The midwife has clamped a plastic seal on the child's umbilical cord wound which eventually dries and falls off. The crying girl has a mass of black hair but whose ethnicity is caucasian. This is from a documentary series of pictures about the first year of the photographer's first child Ella. Accompanied by personal reflections and references from various nursery rhymes, this work describes his wife Lynda's journey from expectant to actual motherhood and for Ella - from new-born to one year-old.

  • During the morning rush-hour at Bank underground station in the heart of London's financial district, the grim face of 90s tube travel is seen here in a wide landscape of rounded tunnel and the curve of the station platform. A train guard watches for a green signal as Londoners are sandwiched inside the nearest carriage. Waiting for the doors to close and the hot air to seal them inside the small space, men and women press against each other in a claustrophobic journey along the Central Line. The Central line is a London Underground line, coloured red on the tube map. It is a deep-level "tube" line, running east-west across London, and, at 76 km (47 mi). Incorporated in 1891 it is today the longest Underground line and also the busiest with around 260 million passengers a year.

  • In fine, late-summer weather, an eleven year-old girl gingerly steps over a stile on the coastal path at Carregwastad Point, near Strumble Head, Pembrokeshire, Wales. Steadying herself with a walking pole, she climbs over wearing trainers rather than stout walking boots as this path is gentle for younger outdoor enthusiasts. The Pembrokeshire Coast Path is the first National Trail in Wales. Opened in 1970, the path is almost entirely contained within the boundaries of the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park that takes in 17 Sites of Scientific Interest (SSSI), two nature reserves, and Wales' only marine nature reserve. The cliff tops offer wonderful expanses of wildflowers in Spring (April and May are best). Wide variety of birds nest along the cliffs, and grey seals can often be seen in the water below.
