  • Four small vessels belonging to traditional oyster fishermen use nets to catch a new harvest of shellfish aboard their antique boat from the Fal Estuary. On calm waters, the oystermen have harvested on the River Fal in the same traditional and highly sustainable fashion, without the use of mechanical power, for more than five hundred years, being widely grown along the whole Cornish coast when the Romans invaded, and by 1602 they were being caught in much the same way as they are today, using thick, strong nets, called dredges. Byelaws banned oyster dredging by mechanical means, forcing local fishermen to rely on wind and tide in purpose-built, sail-powered Falmouth Working Boats. Although most oyster fishermen in Falmouth have other seasonal jobs, for the most experienced and committed fishermen oysters provide a decent year-round livelihood.

  • Largely American passengers re-join their cruise holiday voyage around the Gulf of Mexico during a day's stop-over in Cancun, Mexico. Reflected in the puddles of recent seasonal rain, they queue up on the port's quayside to have their identity passes checked before being allowed back on board the Fun Ship Ecstasy. Seen above them and in reflected in the water at their feet are some of the many windows and portholes of this enormous vessel belonging to the Vegas-style Carnival Cruise lines company. The Panamanian-registered MS Ecstasy is a 70,367 ton cruise ship carrying 2,052 passengers and 920 crew whose routes are mainly around the Gulf and Carribean Sea.

  • A family risk their safety near a larger cruiser while passing-by in a tiny motorised boat on the River Thames during the Henley Royal Regatta boat races, England. The father and children float past the larger vessel that could badly damage their boat in a collision. The river is busy on Regatta weekend and vessels of all shapes and sizes occupy an otherwise narrow stretch of water in rural Oxfordshire. Parties and good-humour on-board the cruisers still means that river laws and good behaviour must be followed to avoid accidents. • Stripped of their feathers, plucked ducks await the next stage during a family Foie Gras business in French Alsace. The Kessler family live on a farm in the quiet village of Boofzheim in Alsace, France. Their business is producing Foie Gras and they raise force-fed ducks near the German border region. The youngest member is daughter Mireille wearing a blood-stained apron. She has cut the throat of a duck, draining the body and especially the liver of blood. After tapping the head with a knife to render the animal unconscious, she stands in a pool of blood from other birds which stains the courtyard floor. On the left, her parents and grandmother are plucking the feathers from newly-killed carcasses which are strung up on a special rack for this purpose. France produces and consumes the most Foie Gras in Europe using the French Gavage method of forcing ducks or geese to consume vast quatities of corn mash down the esophagus two weeks before slaughter.

  • A Polish man leans over to put the finishing touches to two small snowmen that now occupy a park bench on Goose Green in East Dulwich, Southwark, South London, England. This otherwise green space has seen snow falls that have gripped this part of the capital with unsalted road surfaces and commuting nightmares. But this young man is having fun with his diminutive snowy creations who have been dressed up in his and a friend's glasses, their scarves and gloves and with locally-found twigs. The park is relatively quiet with only a hint of the chaos elsewhere but the time spent on pointless pursuits is one way of enjoying adverse weather, rather than the more serious business of getting to work, proving also that snow brings out the childish nature in us all.

  • As blue dawn light brightens to become another wintry day in south London a commuter awaits the arrival of a distant red bus to climb a slippery hill. Standing by the timetable of the bus stop on Red Post Hill in the borough of Southwark traffic approaches slowly on a road that controversially appears not to have been gritted properly for vehicles to maintain a proper grip on this snowy surface. Headlights point uphill and the freshly-fallen snow has started to freeze so wheel and tyre traction will prove ever-difficult for those trying to journey to work.
    london_snows06-13-01-2010 copy.jpg
  • As blue dawn light becomes another wintry day in south London, the glow of a car's brake lights shines through a covering of fresh snow. The driver has only swept the vehicle's back window with a rear wiper but with her foot on the brake pedal, she is about to set off on a drive to work this morning on roads that have controversially, not been gritted or salted by council highway workers. The surface is therefore still snowy in this residential area of Herne Hill, SE24, London and is a treacherous surface on which to maintain wheel and tyre (tire) traction and many accidents will result, including the heavy lorry (truck) which is about to climb this hill and which will soon prevent him from going much further.
