  • Sudanese President, Omar Hassan Ahmad al-Bashir is seated against a gold leaf backdrop of Islamic texts in a reception room of his palace in central Khartoum. Al-Bashir is head of the National Congress Party and has been in power since October 1993. In 2009 he was indicted for war crimes by the ICC, (International Criminal Court) and represented as a bloodstained dictator by elements of the international media though is seemingly loved and respected for his role in empowering women. Secretary General of the National Council for Children's Welfare, Amira Elfadil, says "He comes from within us all. He has a military background but he is a simple man, a man of the people, with good Islamic values. He speaks from his heart."

  • In the weeks before Christmas day on December 25th, the Lord Mayor of London hosts an annual party at his official town hall - the Guildhall - in the historic financial district of the City of London. Inviting Greater London's borough Mayors, they can each invite worthy children for an afternoon's fancy dress party. Two children dressed as Tarzan with a small monkey and a Grenadier Guard with a bearskin, and are seated on the Mayoral throne like two princes in a royal court. The chairs are coated with gold leaf with red cushioned fabric and with the Corporation of London's crest on the top. It looks resplendent and opulent. The two kids are sat looking small in the chairs seemingly made for giants but behind them is another boy dressed as a grey rabbit with floppy ears running past. The Guildhall has been used as a town hall for several hundred years, and is still the ceremonial centre of the City of London. The term Guildhall refers both to the whole building and to its main room, which is a medieval style great hall similar to those at many Oxbridge colleges. The Guildhall complex houses the offices of the Corporation of London and various public facilities. (Greater London also has a City Hall). The great hall is believed to be on the site of an earlier Guildhall, and has large mediaeval crypts underneath. During the Roman period it was the site of an amphitheatre, the largest in Britannia. The City of London is still part of London's city centre, but apart from financial services, most of London's metropolitan functions are centred on the West End. The City of London has a resident population of under 10,000 but a daily working population of 311,000.

  • From a high viewpoint on Snow Hill, we see the green 'Long Walk' in the Royal Estate's Windsor Great Park. We look down the 3-mile straight road into the distance towards Windsor Castle in the summer shinshine during the equestrian 3-Day Event held annually on Her Majesty the Queens's property. Half-way down the lush avenue of Elm trees there are some horses and their riders either warming up before competition, or galloping across the landscape on a round against the clock. A few spectators have stopped to watch this part of the course but others are elsewhere at the dramatic water jumps. The Long Walk was commenced by Charles II from 1680-1685 by planting a double avenue of elm trees. The central carriage road was added by Queen Anne in 1710. Windsor Castle was begun in the 11th century by William the Conqueror as it afforded a good defensive point over the River Thames. A vast area of Windsor Forest to the south of the castle became reserved by the King for personal hunting and also to supply the castle with wood, deer, boar and fish. Windsor Great Park (locally referred to simply as the Great Park) is a large deer park and Crown Estate of 5,000 acres, to the south of the town of Windsor on the border of Berkshire and Surrey in England. The park was, for many centuries, the private hunting ground of Windsor Castle and dates primarily from the mid-13th century. Now largely open to the public, the parkland is a popular recreation area for residents of the western London suburbs.

  • A lone male figure makes his way along a corridor of power in the newly-opened European Parliament building in Brussels, Belgium. As the new head-quarters of the EU and an administrative home to the Members of European Parliament (MEPs), it is a contemporary architectural symbol of infuence and modernity. We see the man walking towards an open atrium. The viewer can see three floors though there are many more out of sight and on two of the levels there are TV screens with the stars denoting the number of member states at that time. The interior is grid-like with warm and inviting lighting, making for a productive environment in which office workers can feel comfortable when dealing with European political business.

  • Just after heavy rain when the streets of London's West End are wet but brightening after the clouds have passed we look into the windows of a black taxi cab on the busy Charing Cross Road. It is a scene of urban transport and inclement weather. We can see the rough form of the taxi driver at the front of his vehicle but it appears that he is stationary, possibly awaiting for the return of his fare-paying passenger from nearby bookshops such as Foyles in the background. A No-Smoking sticker is on the window and advertising on the side panel shows the arms of an airline passenger sitting in an airliner seat but once the taxi passenger returns, their head will be directly above this. The car's roof is still wet from rain, glistening in the artificial street lights that have turned on during the dark rain storm.

  • Desk in the preserved office of former Minister in charge of GDR secret police chief, Erich Mielke - an exhibit in 'Haus 1' the ministerial headquarters of the Stasi secret police in Communist East Germany, the GDR. Built in 1960, the complex now known as the Stasi Museum. Before the fall of the Wall, it was a 22-hectare complex of espionage whose centrepiece is the office and working quarters of the former Minister of State Security, Mielke who considered their role as the 'shield and sword of the party', conducting one of the world's most efficient spying operations against its political dissenters during its 40-year old socialist history. After the fall of the socialist state, Mielke was sentenced to 6 years in prison and died in 2000, aged 92. During Hitler's Third Reich, the Gestapo had one agent for every 2,000 citizens whereas the Stasi had approximately an spy for every 6.5. Here at the Stasi HQ alone 15,000 were employed plus the many regional stations. German media called East Germany 'the most perfected surveillance state of all time' - administered from this complex of offices.

  • Looking down from a high vantage point, we see boy pupils seated as they gather in front of the Headmaster during morning assembly at the City of London School for boys in central London. Individual faces in neat rows stretch into the distance as we look past the Headmaster who is addressing, facing his students. Some seem serious, a few are looking bored while one boy can be seen coughing into his hand and another looking away with a smirk. We can see a diverse range of ethnic backgrounds, skin colours and hairstyles. The City of London School (CLS) is a boys' public school on the banks of the River Thames. It traces its origins to a bequest of land by John Carpenter, town clerk of London in 1442. The City of London has a resident population of under 10,000 but a daily working population of 311,000. The City of London is a geographically-small City within Greater London, England. The City as it is known, is the historic core of London from which, along with Westminster, the modern conurbation grew. The City's boundaries have remained constant since the Middle Ages but it is now only a tiny part of Greater London. The City of London is a major financial centre, often referred to as just the City or as the Square Mile, as it is approximately one square mile (2.6 km) in area. London Bridge's history stretches back to the first crossing over Roman Londinium, close to this site and subsequent wooden and stone bridges have helped modern London become a financial success.

Rather than being on duty and flying the aircraft himself, he is travelling home as a passenger. On many commercial flights, off-duty air crew position as passengers. Airlines plan complicated logistics with cabin and cockpit crew members' duty rosters. This man's four stripes denotes his seniority as a captain who flies right-hand seat, in command of a airliner. In the US, pilots might also have National Guard careers flying jet fighters in times of conflict while off-duty in airline shifts. Reflected lights and other windows merge into this scene of European air travel where the everyday misery of delays and disruption affect millions on a daily basis. Some people are still seated while the more enthusiastic wait in line, queuing for the imminent departure. Frankfurt is also a sprawling hub for the German state airline Lufthansa.
