  • An outdoor exhibition panel showing a dead prisoner during the Todesmarsch (Death March) from Sachsenhausen concentration camp at the end of WW2, now known as the Sachsenhausen Memorial and Museum. Sachsenhausen was a Nazi and Soviet concentration camp in Oranienburg, 35 kilometres (22 miles) north of Berlin, Germany, used primarily for political prisoners from 1936 to the end of the Third Reich in May 1945. After World War II, when Oranienburg was in the Soviet Occupation Zone, the structure was used as an NKVD special camp until 1950. Executions took place at Sachsenhausen, especially of Soviet prisoners of war. 30,000 inmates died there from exhaustion, disease, malnutrition, pneumonia, etc. The remaining buildings and grounds are now open to the public as a museum.

  • In front of amused elderly passers-by, street performers strut their stuff during a Gay Pride parade of homosexuals and transgender cross-dressers. One wears a bright red and gold costume with feathers just off the road while another wears a dancer's sequined leotard. Gay pride or LGBT pride is the positive stance against discrimination and violence toward lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people to promote their self-affirmation, dignity, equality rights, increase their visibility as a social group, build community, and celebrate sexual diversity and gender variance.

  • A man of Afro-Caribbean birth, clutches at his scarf to keep out freezing temperatures during a cold snap in south London. Falling snow has settled on the man's black hair and even turned his eyelashes white after his walk from home to a local bus stop from where he is trying to commute to work. Because of skin colour, the white snowflakes make this picture a largely monochrome scene, adding to the bleak sense of wintry conditions. He is clearly unprepared for winter, wearing neither hat nor gloves and looks chilled to the bone thanks to the heat he's losing through his head and upper body. The climate of this part of the northern hemisphere can be ferocious for those ill-equipped or at the very least, unpleasant for those from warmer parts of the world.

  • The British Rt. Hon. Alan Milburn, MP for Darlington is seen startling a young baby during a constituency visit to St George's Start-up Centre which offers crèche facilities, health and employment advice and wider support services for local children and families, in Netherfield, Nottingham England. The child looks scared to death as Milburn leans over with a fearful look on his face, as the child sits on its father's knee. Milburn was a supporter of Tony Blair (and therefore called a Blairite) and held numerous governmental posts, including: Minister of State for Health (1997-1998); Chief Secretary to the Treasury (1998-1999); Secretary of State for Health (1999-2003) and Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster (2004 to 2005). • "First ladies." A six month-old infant girl has a shocked look on her face as she plays with a copy of the broadsheet Guardian newspaper whose front page headline photograph is of Hilary Clinton, then First Lady of the United States. Clinton is also looking aghast at something she is experiencing. Coincidentally, the President's wife and the first-born of this family are both first ladies. The child has sunk down into her high-chair, reacting to something her mother has said. This is from a documentary series of pictures about the first year of the photographer's first child Ella. Accompanied by personal reflections and references from various nursery rhymes, this work describes his wife Lynda's journey from expectant to actual motherhood and for Ella - from new-born to one year-old.

  • Leader of the Labour party, Neil Kinnock makes his infamous speech during the Labour Party election rally on 1st April 1992 in Sheffield, England. In the 1992 election, Labour made considerable progress – reducing the Conservative majority to just 21 seats. It came as a shock to many when the Conservatives won a majority, but the "triumphalism" perceived by some observers of a Labour party rally in Sheffield (together with Kinnock's performance on the podium) may have helped put floating voters off.

Around a recession-bled Britain, high-street businesses have been going bust in their thousands. Britain has now endured eight recessions since the Second World War. No two recessions are alike, and that applies to the current slowdown also. It has been caused by a shock to the availability of credit, a massive build up of debt. The number of people out of work currently stands at almost two million. Given the rate at which the economy is deteriorating this could easily be above three million. From a continuing piece of work about windows and urban messages, the picture is from the project of closed business windows: 'Bust - the Art of Recession'.

  • Pedestrians walk in spring sunshine over the newly re-opened Millennium Bridge over London's River Thames, England. The £18.2m bridge, central London's first new river crossing (from tate Modern to St Paul's Cathedral) for more than a century, was opened on 10 June 2000 but was shut three days later because of what engineers called the "synchronised footfall" - the swaying effect of hundreds of people stepping in unison. 91 dampers similar to shock absorbers were fitted allowing its re-opening in early 2002. We see here hundreds of visitors to the Bankside walking north and south across this convenient piece of engineering. Coincidentally, they walk on the same right side as drivers in the UK. Two businessmen walk closest to the viewer but elsewhere people look like tourists and pleasure-seekers.

  • Racist graffiti has been sprayed on a wall on Herne Hill in the south London borough of Southwark. Appearing some time over the weekend, the offensive message was left outside a jazz bar called Dee Dee's in an otherwise very affluent suburb of the capital, making this offence very unusual and shocking many residents. It was initially partly painted over then covered by sheets before council workmen appeared to remove the graffiti within 30mins after it being reported.
