  • Using a specially-designed trolley, we look down from above on two US Navy crew members transporting smart weapon armaments across the deck of the aircraft carrier US Navy USS Harry S Truman during its deployment patrol of the no-flyzone in the Persian Gulf, near the Kuwaiti coast. The Truman is the largest and newest of the US Navy's fleet of new generation carriers, a 97,000 ton floating city with a crew of 5,137, 650 are women. The Iraqi no-fly zones (NFZs) were proclaimed by the United States, United Kingdom and France after the Gulf War of 1991 to protect humanitarian operations in northern Iraq and Shiite Muslims in the south. Iraqi aircraft were forbidden from flying inside the zones. The policy was enforced by US, UK and French aircraft patrols until France withdrew in 1998. .

  • A hunched, homeless elderly man walks along Fenchurch Street in the City of London while younger and affluent office workers saunter past, smiling and with a care in the world. It is a scene of social class division, the contrasts between wealth and poverty, have and have nots, prospects and no hope for the future and of old age and youth. The old man carries a plastic bag with all his belongings and the workers carry their lunch in a paper bag. They are not only smart and he dishevelled but they stand tall and he is stooped, further proof of the hard, demanding life he leads on the capital's streets.

A primitive plastic chain protects the million Pound armament from visitors touching although the bomb will be a non-operational model. A TV screen demonstrates the deadly nature of the guided munition that are typically mounted under the wings of fighter jets - in the days before pilotless drone aircraft.

  • The legs of two young girls sit astride their beloved ponies at a gymkhana in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire. Wearing a smart herringbone patterned jacket, regulation jodhpurs, short polished boots and holding a crop to encourage the horse to perform a series of trick and races, the rider nearest the viewer sits calmly awaiting the next event. The word gymkhana is an Indian Raj term that referred to a place where sporting events took place to test the skill of the competitors. • A schoolboy of Afro-Caribbean descent stands looking confused on a platform at Victoria mainline station in central London. The young lad looks smart in a new school uniform of cap, blazer, long trousers and polished black shoes. We might guess that it is the start of a new academic year and that he is about to attend a new school for which he needs to take a train on his own. His mother and younger and older sister are also to the far right of the picture so he may go with his elder sibling carrying a multi-coloured umbrella and a bright blue briefcase containing his lunch and a few items needed for lessons. Surrounded by adult commuters, some of who look on with mild amusement, also make await their train from the city out of town. Mostly, people mind their own business and what is a special day for the boy will become a much-travelled route.

  • An American expatriate living in Monaco laughs at a joke from an unseen person while standing near her apartment in front of a beach mural on the Avenue Princess Grace. The cartoon character is a puny bather in an old fashioned bathing costume and flippers, showing off a scrawny arm and non-existant bicep. Seen from a low angle, the blonde-haired widow wears sunglasses, a black coat and speckled scarf around her neck, has been living in Monaco for many years and speaks fluent French. We see a smart lady in her middle-age enjoying her retirement in the warm Mediterranean climate.

  • A smart elderly lady walks into a late sun on a chilly afternoon on the Kings Road, Chelsea, London, England. Striding past the viewer she has a determined look on her face, a purpose for reaching her destination without delay and oblivious to other influences. Other shoppers are walking in her directionand their faces are also lit by the sunshine but in the background they are less prominant than the woman in the foreground. With so little highlights, this image is full of low-key shadow making it dark and gloomy. Kings Road Chelsea is a chic street that found modern fame during the Sixties when pretty young things paraded their new-found fashion clothing.

They both have a similar skin tones and are equally smart in dark suits and ties. The male on the left cradles a pint of beer while other's drink is a half-pint of either lager or perhaps apple juice. They both look successful and confident about their friendship or business dealings as they share a joke or swap stories about their lives. They wear sun glasses against the late, strong sunshine but the background has gone dark because the sun has illuminated only their faces and chests. It is a picture of confidence, success and humour.

In the brand's flagship store, the last hours tick away before the transfer of sovereignty of Hong Kong from the United Kingdom to the Peoples Republic of China (PRC), often referred to as "The Handover" on June 30, 1997. Midnight of that day signified the end of British rule and the transfer of legal and financial authority back to China. Shanghai Tang is an international clothing chain company, founded in 1994 by Hong Kong businessman David Tang Wing Cheung. • A portrait of three brothers of the same family have their picture taken outside their parents' home in Westcliff, England. The eldest is a teenager of approximately 17 and is holding his youngest brother who is still only 12 months-old. The third boy is biting his lip while looking to the viewer, more anxiously than the other two. He is possibly 14 but both the elder lads wear identically-designed jumpers that cut across the throat to allow their clean white shirts and ties to remain visible. Apart from the young child, the elders share the same dark hair colour but genetically, they share one chromosome that has given them heavy eyebrows, a family trait. This was taken on Kodachrome film stock in the spring of 1961 so the look and feel of the image is dated with wonderfully muted colours that this Kodak film offered to consumers in the early 60s.

Meanwhile, the boys sister towers above him dressed in a bright red coat and clean white gloves and short white socks. Alongside her is a friend also wearing gloves and a knee-length skirt but we see only their lower bodies and not their faces so they are unrecognisable - an older sibling and a girl friend. It is the summer of 1960 and while the red is vibrant, the blues and greens are more muted in this Kodachrome film which has a wonderful magenta colour cast in the mid-tones reminiscent of the classic days of early photography when shifts in color gave a faded look

One middle-aged gent stands eyeing the poor man suspiciously while other men of wealth, prospects and prosperity are tall and stand erect in smart suits and polished shoes, the homeless man is hunched and dishevelled, carrying a supermarket bag - perhaps containing all of his worldly goods. The manual labourer wears blue overalls, yellow gloves and keys in his back pocket while the man in a wastecoat and smart trousers and polished slip-on shoes appears to be fast asleep, his fingers across his chest. This scene suggests the social divisions of the working man: Of the young, educated post-war generation whose opportunities have afforded them a faster lifestyle, far removed from that of the physically-demanding job of a man whose life has been spent cleaning and sweeping. English social differences is clearly represented here as the harshness of the manual labourer versus a lazy youth of today, seen in the middle of the modern city.

  • A theatrical joke about bureaucracy between French and British comedians at an event to mark the opening of the Channel Tunnel produces this quirky scene where each country's officials are seated at a long table, dressed in British flags, to symbolise the controls on human traffic that will soon pass through the tunnel beneath the sea between England and France, the first physical link between these two land masses since the Ice Age. Wearing smart uniforms, French immigration police and Gendarmes sit among British customs and immigration officials who, rather comically wear yellow hard hats because Health and Safety laws make the wearing of protective headgear compulsory on construction sites. A frontier control point notice stands for the benefit of viewers who might otherwise be guessing what is going on.

Wearing a smart herringbone patterned jacket, regulation jodhpurs and holding a crop to encourage the horse to perform a series of trick and races, she sits calmly awaiting the next event. The word gymkhana is an Indian Raj term that referred to a place where sporting events took place to test the skill of the competitors. In the UK and east coast of the US, the term gymkhana now almost always refers to an equestrian event for riders on horses, often with the emphasis on children's participation (such as those organised here by the Pony Club). Gymkhana classes include timed speed events such as barrel racing, keyhole, keg race (also known as "down and back"), flag race, and pole bending.
