  • Using recycled bottles, locals collect thermal spring water at Fonte de Sao Joao, on 17th July 2016, in the spa resort of Luso, Portugal. In the 11th century, Luso was a sleepy village linked to a monastery in the hills near Coimbra but it became a lively spa resort in the 1700s as its hot water springs became a focus for tourism. The waters here are said to have therapeutic value in the treatment for bad circulation, muscle tone, rheumatism and renal problems. (Photo by Richard Baker / In Pictures via Getty Images)

  • Spring flowers grow in the beds at Bank Triangle, beneath the pillars of the Bank of England and Cornhill. We see from a low angle, alongside the level of the flowers, the Corinthian pillars of Cornhill Exchange on the right and the higher Bank on the left. The Bank of England is the central bank of the United Kingdom. Sometimes known as the “Old Lady” of Threadneedle Street, the Bank was founded in 1694, nationalised on 1 March 1946, and in 1997 gained operational independence to set monetary policy.

  • Accompanied by a City of London police officer, members of a Druid sect walk through the street as part of their Spring Equinox celebrations. The Ancient Druids were once Judges, Kingmakers, Scientists, Magicians and Priests and their modern counterparts may be viewed likewise. The word itself comes through both Brythonic tongues (Cornish and Welsh) meaning either knowledge of the oak or wizard - or wise man in Gaelic (Irish and Scots.) Druidry itself is both a philosophical viewpoint and a religious world view, although many Druids view themselves also as Pagan Priests. A druid was a member of the priestly class in Gaul and possibly other parts of Celtic western Europe during the Iron Age. Following the invasion of Gaul by the Roman Empire, the druids were suppressed by the Roman government.

  • During a journey into America's hinterlands, days after the September 11th attacks in New York and Washington DC, an American flag has been sprayed with aerosol paint on a grassy knoll by a local garage owner near Sinking Spring, Pennsylvania. In outpourings of grief, anger and patriotic rhetoric, flags were flown as never before as America sought to express their emotions and a unity. A spotlight shines across the bank to show passing motorists the creative stars and stripes artwork on the roadside. Sinking Spring's Native American tribe in this were known as the Minsi or Wolf tribe who had the reputation for being quite warlike at times..

  • Pedestrians walk in spring sunshine over the newly re-opened Millennium Bridge over London's River Thames, England. The £18.2m bridge, central London's first new river crossing (from tate Modern to St Paul's Cathedral) for more than a century, was opened on 10 June 2000 but was shut three days later because of what engineers called the "synchronised footfall" - the swaying effect of hundreds of people stepping in unison. 91 dampers similar to shock absorbers were fitted allowing its re-opening in early 2002. We see here hundreds of visitors to the Bankside walking north and south across this convenient piece of engineering. Coincidentally, they walk on the same right side as drivers in the UK. Two businessmen walk closest to the viewer but elsewhere people look like tourists and pleasure-seekers.

  • Patriotic Americana - After 9/11. An aerosol American flag sprayed on a grassy knoll. In the week after the September 11th attacks, America sought to express their anger and patriotic unity. Evidence of a resilient nation was found on many roadsides. • A young office worker wearing a dark suit stands outside his place of work in a sunny Trinity Square in the City of London, for a quick cigarette break. Puffing guiltily on his fag n the pavement outside beneath the huge supporting pillars of this financial institution. He draws on his cigarette, a sign of his addiction and enjoyment of taking a five or ten-minute pause from his office job. A report showed smokers each lose an average of 30 minutes a day from their workplaces to satisfy their habit. The average smoker takes at least three breaks from the office, each lasting around 10 minutes, research for the Benenden Healthcare Society found. The healthcare group estimates that 290,000 working days are being lost by people leaving their office to smoke.
