  • A detail of a rock and holiday souvenir seller in the Lancashire seaside town of Blackpool. Standing in his shop, we see the owner of this seaside shop on the northwest England resort where buying seaside gifts and souvenirs is ever popular by visitors and daytrippers. In 1887, sugar-boiling factory owner Ben Bullock bought some plain stick candy band had the idea of putting ‘Blackpool Rock’ through the centre of the rock. Now a major industry in the holiday season in Britain and many seaside towns have their versions with their own names running through the rock. Modern seaside rock is thicker, about 1 inch, and more solid than the original form. Its sugar content is nowadays a reason not to buy as much, the adverse effects on teeth from sugar and colouring by the confectionary industry being a main reason for its decline.

  • Lone lady walker beneath Stanage Edge gritstone cliffs, Peak District National Park, Derbyshire..Located in the Peak District National Park in England Stanage Edge is the largest of the gritstone edges that overlook Hathersage in Derbyshire. Stanage Edge at approximately 4 miles in length and 458m at its highest point is the largest of the gritstone cliffs that overlook Hathersage, Derbyshire. The area is one of the most popular locations in the Peak District National Park for climbing and walking with hundreds of rock climbing routes to challenge all ranges of ability. Walkers are drawn to the area to enjoy the varied moorland scenery with stunning views across the surrounding countryside including Hathersage, Castleton and the 'Shivering Mountain', Mam Tor in the west. A walk along the edge is an easy route but the exposed cliff can make conditions difficult throughout the year as it is often battered by wind, rain and regular snowfall in the winter months. There are a number of popular walks including routes along the remains of a Roman Road and towards Redmires Reservoir to the east as well as longer walks such as those including the nearby Longshaw Estate. • We see three friends close-up enjoying a festive party at Hamiltons pub in the City of London only a week before Christmas. It is a busy evening in the public house which is located near Liverpool Street mainline Station and they are in a humerous spirit just having fired off party streamers that have stuck to their clothes and faces. Two are wearing red and white santa claus hats but are stil in their work clothes. One is about to drink some of his pint of beer from a long, straight glass. The three look comical because of the streamers draped over their bodies and they are laughing and giggling at a joke that one has cracked. In the background a man is looking quizzically at the decorations. The City of London has a resident population of under 10,000 but a daily working population of 311,000. The City of London is a geographically-small City within Greater London, England. The City as it is known, is the historic core of London from which, along with Westminster, the modern conurbation grew. The City's boundaries have remained constant since the Middle Ages but it is now only a tiny part of Greater London. The City of London is a major financial centre, often referred to as just the City or as the Square Mile, as it is approximately one square mile (2.6 km) in area. London Bridge's history stretches back to the first crossing over Roman Londinium, close to this site and subsequent wooden and stone bridges have helped modern London become a financial success.

  • Wearing a peaked cap and small rucksack, a young adventurer, scales a giant boulder in the ancient forest of Monbachtal Bach in Germany's Black Forest. Stretching to climb the rock, the lad of 10 uses his hand and walking stick to balance as he puts a boot higher to gain a sure footing. There is ample covering of moss and lichen on the primeval landscape making it hazardous to conquer but the boy has the stamina to get to the top and continue his walk through this beautiful wilderness. The boy is alone in the picture though accompanied by his family but he seems to mange on his own, capable of finding his own limits of endurance and confidence. Geologically, the Black Forest consists of a cover of sandstone on top of a core of gneiss. During the last glacial period, the Würm glaciation, the Black Forest was covered by glaciers.

  • A woman street beggar prostrates herself on a pavement, ignored by Italian shoppers and pedestrians in Florence. As shoppers and tourists walk past in a hurry, pulling suitcases or carrying shopping, the people walk around the kneeling body whose stick lies on the ground with a paper cup to collect any spare change offered. There seems to be a mixture of indifference, pity and shame for what has become the modern face of Italian society in this once-grand medieval city. The city lies on the River Arno and is known for its history and its importance in the Middle Ages and in the Renaissance, especially for its art and architecture. A centre of medieval European trade and finance and one of the wealthiest cities of the time, Florence has been called the Athens of the Middle Ages.

  • An elderly lady is helped up from a sitting position near the statue of US President George Washington in London's Trafalgar Square. It might be a relative who holds the frail woman by her left arm as she struggles to get upright, despite the use of a walking stick. On the brochure she is holding, is the text relating to the upcoming 2012 Olympics. The statue of George Washington is a replica of a work by Jean-Antoine Houdon, to the north east corner of the Square that commemorates the Battle of Trafalgar (1805), a British naval victory of the Napoleonic Wars over France.

  • Wearing a peaked cap and small rucksack, a young adventurer, clambers over rocks in the ancient forest of Monbachtal Bach in Germany's Black Forest. Stretching to climb the rock, the lad of 10 uses his hand and walking stick to balance as he puts a boot higher to gain a sure footing. There is ample covering of moss and lichen on the primeval landscape making it hazardous to conquer but the boy stumbles over the terrain and continues his walk through this beautiful wilderness.

  • "On all fours." An eleven month-old infant crawls up some back garden steps and into her parents' house. Her head and shoulders are already hidden as she disappears inside. She is exploring a familiar world, being bold, gaining strength and confidence to move independently to eventually stand upright and walk unaided. Someone has taped a short stick to the upper step to help her position herself downwards when exiting the house backwards. Wearing only a nappy (diaper) it is clearly a warm summer's day. This is from a documentary series of pictures about the first year of the photographer's first child Ella. Accompanied by personal reflections and references from various nursery rhymes, this work describes his wife Lynda's journey from expectant to actual motherhood and for Ella - from new-born to one year-old.

  • A street beggar has been noticed by a young Italian boy who points out the poor kneeling body to his parent. A stick lies on the ground with a paper cup to collect any spare change offered and a cash customer stands entering his pin number into the automated bank dispenser, his back to the underclass of society. This has become normal for what has become the modern face of Italian society in this once-grand medieval city. The city lies on the River Arno and is known for its history and its importance in the Middle Ages and in the Renaissance, especially for its art and architecture. A centre of medieval European trade and finance and one of the wealthiest cities of the time, Florence has been called the Athens of the Middle Ages.
