Heaving on the front bonnet, the people try to rescue the vehicle from rising waters on the outskirts of town. The car has been overcome in a metre of flood water and unable to start on its own. Lavant is a village just north of the city of Chichester. It is made up of two parts, Mid Lavant and East Lavant, and takes its name from the River Lavant which flows from East Dean. This area has been prone to flooding for several years and houses around the rising rivers can be blighted with insurance companies refusing future cover.

  • Looking skyward is a USAF pilot learning how to vector in a potential helicopter rescue as part of a special US Air Force (USAF) survival course (see also Corbis image 42-18212808) Fairchild AFB, Spokane, Washington State. The man has been taught to use a special escape and evasion (E &E) techniques to visiting air crew whose flying careers depend on passing this rigorous week of survival instruction. Should they be downed in hostile territory for example, they will need every skill learned here to survive possibly weeks being hunted in the wilderness so trapping and preparing fresh meat for human consumption is important for survival. Here the crewman has let off a red smoke canister to mark his location for the friendly aircraft to see.

  • On both sides of the railway track, thousands of commuters desperate to get home after a long day at work in central London, line the platforms to we see from an aerial perspective. But the rail workers' union has called for industrial action and there are no trains yet for these passengers to board for north or southbound services. Sensibly away from the edges, people are standing up to six-deep in anticipation of a ride home as the exodus to the suburbs hits its peak time. 37 per cent of workers in the capital used rail or underground travel as their main form of transport to work, according to regional and local statistics compiled by the Office for National Statistics.

Its vision in 1903, was ?to supply high grade outfitting for men, in commodious surroundings, giving honest value for cash, and to exercise unceasing efforts in satisfying the wishes of its customers.? The Savoy Taylors Guild shop ? right next to the Savoy Hotel in London?s Strand ? was in itself an immaculate example of the craftsmanship of the times, with elegant brass-fronted windows shining out on the changing and developing world of the Edwardian era.

Bending down to remove the fallen snow from the road, he will again try to get a grip and friction of the slippery surface in order to make it up the gradient in Herne Hill. A van behind is already becoming impatient and is about to get past the stranded car and a passer-by looks on from the pavement, bemused. As the capital's infrastructure ground to a halt, with few trains and no buses for commuters to catch, walking and driving remained the only options.

It is a bleak and depressingly empty scene and the jet is merely a dot in the grey English sky, traditionally familiar summer weather.
