  • An executive peers down on his employees on a giant screen, addressing his loyal audience of his staff who have congregated at an Academy Day held for 3,000 of company London employees at Excel in London's Docklands, England. The hall is packed and his disciples listen and watch intently and obediently to watch their Leader speak like a Big Brother character, who ernestly and sincerely talks down to them despite being dressed casually for such a large event. Each employee will attend this brainstorming fair where later, motivational pep-talks from executives, outside speakers and gurus will talk to large groups of personnel so their presence on this day away from the office is vital for the year's business ahead.

  • Large arrows coloured red, green and yellow point north, west and east - or up, right and left - in three directions, to offer directions to seminars for accountants during their annual Academy Day held for 3,000 of company London employees at Excel in London's Docklands, England. The people are either confidently pacing forward, standing still to seek guidance or simply spontaneously emerging from the shadows to a brighter future, a moment when freedom of choice is offered and the road ahead dictates their fate. It is a scene of corporate theatre and each employee will attend this fair where motivational pep-talks from executives, outside speakers and gurus will talk to large groups of personnel so their presence on this day away from the office is vital for the year's business ahead.

  • An adult business window displays the naughty underwear worn by five mannequin models of a Soho sex shop on Old Compton Street in London's West End. Tilted slightly to the left, we see the 5 models posing in various positions of suggestive stances, all demonstrating the shop's array of erotic clothing for the Good Time Girl! On the far right is the artwork of a topless woman, wearing only knee-length stockings. See from behind, the line-drawing of the female suggests a dancer on a Parisian stage act such as the Folies Bergere or Paradis Latin - variety performances for the male admirer. She looks over her left shoulder as if to wink in our direction, all part of the illusion of coquettish desire and greedy eroticism. Old Compton Street is known for cafes, bars and especially the gay, trans-gender scene and for sellers of erotic toy 'accessories'!

  • A Hungarian man stands in an open phone booth to make a call using a landline in a Budapest street. The word Telefon is overhead and this cold-war era technology is in use in 1990. According to Thomas Edison, "Tivadar Puskas was the first person to suggest the idea of a telephone exchange". Puskás's idea finally became a reality in 1877 in Boston. It was then that the Hungarian word "hallom" "I hear you" was used for the first time in a telephone conversation when, on hearing the voice of the person at the other end of the line, Puskás shouted "hallom". This cannot be confirmed by any original documents, however it has passed into Hungarian modern folklore. Hallom was shortened to Hello.

  • Football supporter mates mess around in a London street before going on to watch their team's match elsewhere in the capital. But this man in the green stripes of his team is NOT a pickpocket as might be suggested on first look. He reaches into the unbuttoned pocket of the older-looking man in shorts. But recaptioning this picture to suggest he is a street criminal might be thought libelous, giving this brief moment a misinterpretation and misrepresentation.

  • A large, manly woman sips a pint of lager during a darts tournament where she competes in an England Open tournament at the Bunn Leisure Holiday Park in Selsey, near Chichester on the south coast of England. Holding three darts with a Union Jack flags on the 'flights', her glass covers her face but we see her rings and bracelet and her ample belly after a life of beer and cigarettes in pubs like this. A great deal of alcohol (mostly lager, but also Coke) is consumed during darts tournaments although smoking in public places has now been banned in the UK, including pubs and bars. This audience seemed to consist largely of very large lesbian women from working families which seems to suggest that the pub (and alcohol) is still the place where women are attracted to the game of darts. ..

  • A gentleman dressed in a pin-stripe suit favoured by older workers in England, exhales the smoke from a fat cigar during a lunch-hour in Trinity Square in the City of London. The man is overweight and leads an unhealthy lifestyle, his chin overlapping his striped shirt. The cigar is held at the tips of two fingers and we can see in profile the billowing of a smoky cloud from the man's lips. Government statistics suggest that in 2001, 27% of adults aged 16 and over smoked cigarettes in England; 28% of men and 25% of women. 66% of smokers in England wanted to give up smoking but more than 120,000 deaths were caused by smoking in the UK in 1995; that is, one in five of all deaths.

  • Stacks of cigarette cartons are piled up in a display of duty free goods at Bahrain International airport . Camel Filters are featured more prominently here to suggest the importance of desert Gulf States like Bahrain in the global market. Bahrain is a key hub airport in the region, providing a gateway to the Northern Gulf. The airport is the major hub for Gulf Air which provides 52% of overall movements. It is also the half-way point between Western Europe and Asian destinations such as Hong Kong and Beijing. Duty free merchandise such as tobacco, jewellery, perfumes and electronics are big business here, favouring cheaper import duties and currency rates. • At the foot of a tree located opposite the charred Pentagon building days after the September 11th attacks in New York and Washington DC, children have made a makeshift memorial by placing a garland around the model of a military B52 bomber, a NASA space Shuttle, portrait of a smiling president George W Bush and their own interpretation of the attacks on the Twin Towers - with airliners flying towards those symbols of capitalism. Icons of American technology and patriotic success lie on the ground here beneath the tree near Arlington military Cemetery. In a show of unity, many of those gathered on the grass to view the damage done by terrorists worked for the government or defence organisations, their Hawkish rhetoric appearing to suggest heavy-handed retaliation on those held responsible.

  • A businessman puts a foot up on the sill of a menswear shop called Hawkes & Curtis in the City of London. From behind, it looks as if he has only on leg, such is the moment and the perspective. The image is also slightly off the level and is a visual pun on the arrows in the road and on the building's wall that suggest the computer command to rotate the picture left.

  • An elderly Hungarian woman pauses to smile at the viewer during a busy morning in Budapest's Central Market Hall (Hungarian: Nagycsarnok), on F?vám Tér in the 9th district. The market is the largest indoor market in the Hungarian capital and is where this lady and many other market traders converge on every weekday morning to sell their own produce. This woman has a lined face suggesting she has had a hard life under a Communist regime. She still wears a traditional Hungarian covered head favoured by older people in rural communities but is now dying out as headwear for a younger generation.

  • A Christian crucifix stands encased in a wooden box that has been attached to a panelled wall in Quebec, Canada. The image is white except for the Jesus icon itself and coloured lights which glow on this dark afternoon in the depths of Winter. The religious shrine consists of the human effigy standing a plinth next to faded dried flowers. On the left side are six wheel hubs also fixed to a wire fence that borders this person's property. Their decorative design suggests the Canadian owner likes driving sports or utility vehicles but who is also a worshipper of the Christian faith and believer in idols. Canada's 2001 Census showed, 72% of the Canadian population listed Roman Catholicism or Protestantism as their religion. The Roman Catholic Church in Canada is by far the country's largest single denomination.

  • Seen through the window of an amusement arcade in London's Gerrard Street, Chinatown, we see the colourful neon lights that garishly shine from behind the glass. Beyond is the hustle and bustle of daily life in this famous street of London's Chinese community. We are slightly confused as to what is inside and what is out. We see the Georgian architecture reflected from behind and to the left is a slot-machine game called Hi-Roller which suggests the use of dice in this gambling activity. Passers-by can be seen outside, making their way past the many restaurants and businesses. In the middle of the scene is a yellow sign positioned by the Metropolitan Police warning against pickpockets as this area of the West End is known for petty crime.

  • As a young office worker sleeps incongruously on a marble pavement, a street sweeper nearby brushes away litter with a small dustpan. The manual labourer wears blue overalls, yellow gloves and keys in his back pocket while the man in a wastecoat and smart trousers and polished slip-on shoes appears to be fast asleep, his fingers across his chest. This scene suggests the social divisions of the working man: Of the young, educated post-war generation whose opportunities have afforded them a faster lifestyle, far removed from that of the physically-demanding job of a man whose life has been spent cleaning and sweeping. English social differences is clearly represented here as the harshness of the manual labourer versus a lazy youth of today, seen in the middle of the modern city.

  • A middle-aged man dressed in a smart dark suit is about to descend underground to Bank tube (subway) station beneath the converging columns of the famous Bank of England and Cornhill Exchange at Bank Triangle in the City Of London, the financial district, otherwise known as the Square Mile. The gentleman is on his way home in the afternoon, his commuting exodus to be shared by its daily working population of 311,000. This perspective of suggests a bank and its architecture looking powerful and influential in the UK's economy. The pillars give a sense of establishment, a scene of classic stability and strength.

  • As an early sun rises, the twin stacks of Richborough cooling Towers make silhouettes against the golden morning light. Now decommissioned, these industrial giants of the landscape are sending clouds of steam vapour into the air, in the county of Kent. Nature can be seen competing with 20th Century technology as solar energy is seen against the war power being generated. From 1962-1971 Richborough burned coal from collieries. In 1971 the station was converted to burn oil. Too costly to run plant underwent trials on an experimental fuel called Orimulsion, a cheap heavy oil and water-based emulsion produced form natural bitumen from Venezuela. Initial results or trials suggested it would make a cheap clean fuel alternative to oil but high sulphur emissions from the plant caused nearby Acid Rain and after local protest, the site has since been derelict.

  • Two party girls are dancing with a male friend who is apparently flirting with the girl holding a packet of cigarettes and an unlit cigarette on the far left. Their body language suggests they know each other. The lady in the middle has red hair and lips and has her eyes closed and is holding a bottle of Hooch, an alcoholic drink. The party venue is dark and chaotic and the atmosphere is energetic and lively at a club venue called Adrenaline Village in Battersea, South London.

  • Two young men dressed in office suits casually stuff their lunches during a hot lunchtime break in the Broadgate Estate in the City of London. Both with legs across knees, the lads in their 20s sit on a bench beneath a tree alongside the statue of a traditional gardener, slightly bent and equipped with hoe and wearing a wastecoat, hobnailed boots and flat cap, an iconic salt-of-the-earth workman. This scene suggests the social divisions of the working man: Of the young, educated post-war generation whose opportunities have afforded them a faster lifestyle, far removed from that of the physically-exhausted man whose life has been spent working the honest land. The English social divide is clearly represented here as the harshness of the manual labourer versus the youth of today, seen in the middle of the modern city.

Strong spring sunshine is almost overhead making hard shadows on the recess and on the well-painted black gloss paintwork on the railings. Stuart House was constructed in 1880. It is a large red-brick detached house in the 'Queen Anne' style. Cadogan Gardens SW3, is an 1890s development between the King's Road and Sloane Street.
