  • Before finalists take part in their last exercises at a gymkhana pony competition, these rosettes prizes seen here in close-up detail wait to be claimed by young winners and losers. From the top we see prizes for Reserve Champions then those for 1st prize, then second, third and runners-up at the very bottom. Such accolades are won and lost by fractions of a second but their importance is remembered for years afterwards as young girls desperately practice to improve their equestrian skills. A huge commitment is needed by the girls and their parents who spend great deals of money and time for these treasured prizes which can be won or lost by fractions of seconds or single points. Those that fail to win go home feeling empty-handed or perhaps cheated out of victory and glory. Those who win hang them on bedroom walls for years to come.

  • A group of red uniformed meat market traders manhandling joints of pork from the back of a meat wagon at Macau's main meat market, on the Rua Sul do Mercado de Sao Domingos, just off the Avenida de Almeida Ribeiro, in Central Macau. The men have on hooded red tunics that hide the bloodstains of dead animal carcasses, a very practical choice of colour. One man has half a pig on his shoulders while another holds a leg in his left hand. The animal carcasses look heavy and they are both struggling under their weight. There is much more meat to be offloaded from the truck and the men queue up to take their turn and remove them for sale inside the market building. Besides historical Chinese and Portuguese world-heritage relics, Macau's biggest attraction is its gaming business. Its gambling revenue in 2006 weighed in at a massive £3.6bn - about £100m more than Las Vegas. Administered by Portugal until 1999, it was the oldest European colony in China, dating back to the 16th century. The administrative power over Macau was transferred to the People's Republic of China (PRC) in 1999, 2 years after Hong Kong's own handover. Macau's name is derived from A-Ma-Gau or Place of A-Ma and this temple dedicated to the seafarers' goddess dates from the early 16th century.

  • The flight-deck crew of a Sri Lankan Airlines A340-300 series Airbus - registration number 4R-ADE - perform a series of pre-flight checks before a scheduled departure, while on the apron at Malé international airport in the Republic of the Maldives. Featuring electronic instruments it is known as a 'glass cockpit' and using a printed checklist manual, they methodically work through dozens of complex systems that require accurate input before the aircraft is ready for take off. Flight navigation computers, fuel and engine settings and radio frequencies all need programming by the two pilots, the captain on the left and the First Officer on the right. These modern airliners have only two pilots in a modern flight-deck as technology superceeded the need for a third member, the flight-engineers of a previous era of aviation.

  • During a fair at the famous Alexandra Palace in north London England, where the first BBC broadcasts were made in the mid-30s, the British Inventors Society (BIS) meet in a stand during a British Invention Show, an expo to help international entrepreneurs to sell their new ideas and concepts. BIS was formed in December 2003. The team that came together includes leading inventors and innovators, academics and entrepreneurs who share a common belief - that invention is the vital spark that drives the world's technology and new orders of wealth creation. But there is no-one at home here, its stand remains unoccupied with vacated seats seen through the open doorway and beneath the plain sign. It is a comical and ironic scene, of unfulfilled ambition and failing innovation.

  • A lorry driver is handed his change after buying a burger at a fast food trailer in Grays, Essex England. The large man has parked his vehicle in a truck stop car park for an early evening food snack. The lady serving him works in an outside mobile burger bar that stands at this popular spot for working men as they pass-by this industrial corridor on the River Thames. Meanwhile, the serving woman's friend sits sunning himself and scratching his head beneath a film poster for the British comedy 'Run Fat Boy, Run' with actor Simon Pegg. Further in the distance, the English Cross of St George flutters and a line of electricity pylons take a transmission cables into central London, taking power into the capital. This south Essex town in the Thames Gateway, is the location for dramatic increases of new housing developments.

  • Using a cloth, a waiter picks up a hot bowl of Butter Squash soup ready for a la carte service in the kitchens at the Vivre restaurant in Sofitel, a 605 bedroom, 27 suite and 45 meeting room accommodation and business hub Heathrow Airport's hub hotel attached to Terminal 5. A stack of clean and unused plates are ready for use on the hot plate that warms them and we see the waiter leaning over in shadow, carefully taking hold of the bowl so that none of the liquid spills. The man is wearing a smart white shirt and is about to take the dish over to the customer's table. From writer Alain de Botton's book project "A Week at the Airport: A Heathrow Diary" (2009). .
