  • A grinning portrait of a fishmonger from the Princess Cafe on Foreshore Road in the North Yorkshire seaside town of Scarborough. Smiling with bad teeth but with a generous and kind face, the elderly man stands on the corner, outside his traditional seaside business in the centre of town where passing trade from locals and tourists guarantee him an income - a secure future towards his retirement in the coming years. In the background are signs advertising his produce: Haddock, Cod, and Lemon Sole - all locally caught and served with chips.

  • A man has chosen a free surface to spread himself out on during a lunchtime break in the City of London. Having removed his shirt and tie, he sunbathes topless with only his trousers and shoes, the clue as to his day-job in a London office. There is a heat wave in the capital and others are soaking up rays during a working week. Bronzed and asleep, the young man is carefree enough not to worry about his eccentric behaviour in a public place.

  • In the twilight, the artificial illumination of Macau's Hotel Lisboa 24-hour a day casino is the only colour (color) of this cityscape. The dominating silhouette of a giant open-mouthed Chinese lion looms from outside the Bank of China building in central Macau. Besides historical Chinese and Portuguese world-heritage relics, Macau's biggest attraction is its gaming business. Its gambling revenue in 2006 weighed in at a massive £3.6bn - about £100m more than Las Vegas. Though many forms of gambling are legal here, the most popular game in the casinos is baccarat, which generates over two thirds of the gaming industry's gross receipts. The official languages are Portuguese and Chinese and the Macau Special Administrative Region, more commonly known as Macau - or Macao - is one of the two special administrative regions (SARs) of the People's Republic of China (PRC), along with Hong Kong. Administered by Portugal until 1999, it was the oldest European colony in China, dating back to the 16th century. The administrative power over Macau was transferred to the People's Republic of China (PRC) in 1999, 2 years after Hong Kong's own handover. Macau's name is derived from A-Ma-Gau or Place of A-Ma and this temple dedicated to the seafarers' goddess dates from the early 16th century.

One blonde girl is looking down into the camera while we see only the hips, arms, and legs of the others as they parade their bodies in front of the media who are grouped tightly together with cameras and a sound microphone. Young women publicising movies or just themselves regularly strut along the beaches and pavements of this French town. The weather is typically bright for May with clear skies and high temperatures. • Two old friends regularly spend afternoons sunbathing at Brixton Lido and talk of old times in the sun. The friends gather every morning in the summer at Brockwell (Brixton) Lido. This is a favourite place in the capital for varied groups of people to meet, swim or just hang out like these London taxi drivers who regularly meet for exercise sessions, accumulating sun tans during long periods in the sunshine. Brockwell Lido in Herne Hill SE24 was originally built in 1937 at a time of coastal and city pool-building but went into decline when bathers preferred to holiday in warmer Spain. Its revival happened when local entrepreneurs re-opened the business and it now enjoys a reputation for some of the best urban swims in the UK.

  • During an August heatwave, the population of Brixton and many others from all over London, bask in the glorious weather at the Brockwell (Brixton) Lido in Brockwell Park, Herne Hill, South London. The Lido is a magnet for families, select groups, the young and old and represents an amalgam of humanity who enjoy the benefits of outdoor bathing and the friendship of meeting old friends and new acquaitances. We see a mass of people in late afternoon light with deep tans from the extended hot summer. There is little space left on the full pavement which retains its solar heat long after the sun has left the quadrangle of the lido's oblong design. They lay reading a newspaper or book, spread themselves on small towels or just chat to fellow-bathers. Swimmers are in the unheated water, others jump in or stand on the edge thinking about their next dive. It is a scene of chaotic fun for all ages and backgrounds. Brockwell Lido is a large, open air swimming pool in Brockwell Park, Herne Hill, London. It opened in July 1937, closed in 1990 and after a local campaign was re-opened in 1994. Brockwell Lido was designed by HA Rowbotham and TL Smithson of the London County Council's Parks Department to replace Brockwell Park bathing pond. It is now a Grade II listed building

  • Two obese parents and their normal weight child sit with their backs to the viewer on the edge of a pool on the open deck of the Fun Ship Ecstasy belonging to Carnival Cruises, as it sails through the Gulf of Mexico. The two adults and the girl wear bathing costumes and their tanned skin is exposed to the sun. They are sitting on the rectangular pool-side tiles taking in the atmosphere and the blue water that they're facing. We see the comparison of healthy youth and oversized adulthood, the parents' wide posteriors dwarf the normal size of their child.

  • An elderly couple sit in peace on a quiet beach in the seaside resort of Great Yarmouth, Norfolk. In a classic English beach holiday scene, the husband and wife relax, reclining in a pair of deckchairs at a kiosk that dispenses these quaintly British beach chairs. A sign telling other holidaymakers to collect and pay for their time in them appears on the freshly-painted clap-board wall. As the lazy completes word puzzles in her magazine, the gentleman reads his regular copy of the Daily Mirror tabloid newspaper. He is tanned, perhaps spent his summer tending his garden back home but here on holiday, they both have the chance to spend some time together away from home, in a resort known for its beaches and coastal adventures.

  • Half-way across the Gulf of Mexico, between Miami and Cancun in Mexico, Carnival Cruise's Fun Ship Ecstasy's passengers are on the Sun deck to enjoy the first few days sailing on the tropical seas. One of the ship's photographers has passed around a ship's circular life ring buoy through which one busty blonde lady has posed for a photograph and is about to pass it on to her nearest neighbour. She is wearing a garish pink and yellow bikini and is holding the life-saving device so that only her breasts are showing, obscuring her face. We see the name of the ship, Ecstasy, around the ring and the plastic ropes are falling on the lady's cleavage, forming circles around her bosoms. In the background, another cruise traveller (traveler) wears a straw sun hat and is also sitting on a blue sun lounger. We see exposed, tanned skin and it looks baking hot with the tropical sun at its zenith, directly overhead at mid-day. Carnival was a pioneer in the concept of cheaper and shorter cruises. Its ships are known for their Las Vegas decor and entertainment. The line calls its ships The Fun Ships. The MS Ecstasy is a Fantasy class cruise ship featuring two pools, whirlpools, a variety of dining options, nightclubs, a casino, and duty-free shopping. After Hurricane Katrina, she spent six months in New Orleans serving as quarters for refugees and relief workers. She suffered heavy damage in 1998 after the laundry room in the ship's stern caught fire damaging much of her stern and aft section.

The Lido is a magnet for families, select groups, the young and old and represents an amalgam of humanity who enjoy the benefits of outdoor bathing and the friendship of meeting old friends and new acquaitances. We see two men of Afro-carribean origin who have a corner of the Lido to themselves. One wears a towel wrapped around his lower-body and sits, arms folded with a look of territorial superiority while the other applies sun lotion to his leg. There is little space left on the full pavement which retains its solar heat long after the sun has left the quadrangle of the lido's oblong design but their colourful towels and possessions are spread out on the paving stones along with childrens' toys including an Action Man toy soldier who is also tanning himself. • A British lady applies a layer of sun cream to her hand on a beach in Magaluf. In the foreground, and aligned with the lady's own body is a sun lounger with a beach towel draped over which depicts the torso and legs of a cartoon Hercules Adonis character complete in ancient Greek style with muscular thighs and short skirt. In the background is a hotel building and two other tourists with their tanned backs towards the viewer. Magaluf is a popular holiday resort on the island of Mallorca, one of the Spanish Balearic Islands. A seedy resort very much orientated around British tourists and catering for both young parties as well as families, it is considered as a hot and exotic alternative to the chilly seaside towns around the UK's coast. .

  • A small group of men are together on the beach just opposite to Ocean Drive on Miami Beach. Two of them are in the foreground and each wear sun glasses, each holding cigars that may be Cuban in origin, a popular source of tobacco leaf in this region of America. They have recently been immersed in the sea and water drips down their rather flabby bodies with the gentleman on the left sucking on his cigar with a belly that expands around his tanned midriff. It is intensely bright, sunny day on the sand, seen behind. Flash has emphasized the water drips and the male sweat and we also see a very clear blue tropical sky.

  • An English caucasian lady smiles at something of interest to the viewer's right. She is a wrinkled female in her sixties, a healthy person with her own original teeth and whose untidy hair is greying and whose skin is slightly tanned under a summer sun. She wears a blue shirt with a wide collar, fashionable in the 1980s (eighties) and has a bemused, attentive expression as if entertained by something of humour out of frame. This is someone's mother and grandmother, at an age when her hard-working life is nearly over and her pension is hopefully covering her everyday needs.

  • An elderly man sunbathes on a summer beach in the seaside resort of Paignton, England. The gentleman looks out across the stretch of sandy coast at low-tide and a square pool made by flooding high-tide sea water provides a natural place to swim when the sea is far out. The male in the foreground is seen in close-up and we see the expanse of his back covered in freckles. After many sunny hours beneath solar rays he is tanned but not burned. Nevertheless, he is at risk of the pigment in those freckles turning into melanomas, the cause of skin cancer. More than 10,000 people a year are developing the deadliest form of skin cancer as a result of package holidays and excessive use of sunbeds. Cases of malignant melanoma rose by 650 (6.5 per cent) in a single year as a result of binge-tanning at home and abroad, according to Cancer Research UK.

  • Three teenage boys bait their lines in the calm of the River Wandle, one of London's lost rivers that still meanders through inner-city London on its course from Carshalton Pond to the Thames. The three lads are reflected in the ripples of this once-polluted water which was once flushed with the toxins of industry such as tanning factories and breweries. After expensive clean-ups by local authorities, kids like these are once again able to catch trout in the way boys like them would do hundreds of years before the industrial revolutiion fouled many a water course. It is a perfect later-summer afternoon and the sun is shining on waterside reeds and grasses making this a scene of idyllic boyhood and undusturbed lazy dreams.

  • Looking down from above, we see young men who are open-chested and with their suit jackets either beneath their heads or on the grass, three office co-workers stretch out over the lush grass and sunbathe during a hot summer lunchtime in Trinity Square in the City of London, England. One has his paperwork under his head and a can of Coke to quench his thirst. Already tanned, the threesome bask under a hot mid-day sun. Risking sunburn after prolonged solar radiation exposure, they enjoy the inner-city heatwave.

  • In the shelter of a large red and yellow-striped marquee tent, a middle-aged husband and wife relax in deck chairs on Brighton's East Pier, England. The wife appears to be asleep and has taken the prrecution against splinters from the pier's planks by spreading a tiny towell to rest her feet upon. She has dyed hair and large sun glasses and her bony legs are tanned and veined from much exposure to the sun. The husband is also fully-clothed with a loud checked jacket, black shoes and socks and he sits crossed-legged with a peaked cap and dark glasses with his hands across his belly. They are in a peaceful spot on this pier, a Victorian seaside structure built in 1899 for those taking the air to walk out onto the sea without getting their feet wet.

On a poster behind, a giant movie hero's face looks towards the viewer with a hand raised in a salute. Pushing her racing wheelchair, possibly for a race in another country, the lady heads for a British Airways check-in zone before a long-haul flight to compete as a paraplegic. Pushing her possessions on an airport trolley, she speeds through the terminal showing tanned, muscular arms and a bottle of Evian mineral water.
