  • The Thomas Telford-designed church on Ulva, Isle of Mull, Scotland. The Telford Church, Ardalum Ulva. The church was designed by Thomas Telford and built between 1827 and 1828 for a cost of £1,500. Dedicated to St. Ewan of Arstraw the nearest wing has now been partitioned off for use for worship. The remainder of the building is used as a community hall. The church boasts that in 1847 everyone on Ulva attended services including one catholic and one atheist. Isle of Ulva, Inner Hebrides. Ulva is a privately owned island with a thriving population of approximately 16 people who are involved variously in traditional sheep and cattle farming, fish farming, oyster farming and tourism. There are no tarmac roads on Ulva, so the main form of transport is quad bikes used by all inhabitants, young and old. The proprietors (the Howard family) are dedicated to creating a balance between the needs of the community and the preservation of one of Scotland’s most unique, beautiful and accessible islands...This Parliamentary church was one of five churches on Mull and Iona to be designed by Thomas Telford and was completed, along with the manse, in 1828. In the mid 1950s Lady Congleton who owned the island purchased the church and the larger partof it was converted into a community hall. Only the north west portion was retained for ecclesiastical use. The church is now privately owed and a couple of services are conducted every year at Easter and Harvest time

Fittingly, the parking bay is for specifically for a disabled motorist and that word has been stencilled in bold white lettering on the wet road surface after a rain shower. The pavement and tarmac glisten making it slippery but the bike has been left and there is no-one in this scene. Reflected inn the puddle is the modern architecture of the office building, also seen rising from street level.

  • High up in the picture, two employees (one in traditional Arab clothes, the other in western dress) of Bahrain International Airport stand on the edge of a passenger 'air bridge' to oversee the departure of an airliner at Bahrain International Airport as it is pushed back by an unseen airport vehicle. It is night time and the ramp (or aircraft parking tarmac) is illuminated by yellow artificial light with the bridge itself, lit my overhead fluorescent tubes that give a blue-green tint above the mens' heads who watch the nose of a departing airliner. It is slowly taken backwards on its way to the runway take-off  position with its passengers on-board. We see only the fuselage, wings and part of its engine cowlings but not the undercarriage wheels, nor the ground itself. The men look as if they are floating in mid-air, being disembodied from the rest of the airfield's equipment.

  • A wide dusk landscape of the development in the City of London, known as Broadgate is a vast estate of corporate buildings developed in the Thatcher years, sitting astride the redeveloped Liverpool Street mainline station. Broadgate is a large, 32-acre (13 ha) office and retail estate in the City of London, owned by British Land and the Blackstone Group and managed by Broadgate Estates. The original developer was Rosehaugh: it was built by a Bovis / Tarmac Construction joint venture and was the largest office development in London until the arrival of Canary Wharf in the early 1990s. The modern and mainly-pedestrianised development is located on the original site of Broad Street station (closed in 1986) and beside and above the railway approaches into Liverpool Street station.

  • Ferry signs foer the Ulva ferry, Isle of Mull, Scotland. Ulva is open from Easter to October; the ferry which takes foot passengers and bicycles runs Monday to Friday 9 - 5. The crossing only takes a couple of minutes and is on demand; summon the ferry by uncovering the red panel on the pier but don't forget to cover it again as the boat approaches. The island is closed on Saturdays but opens on Sundays from June to the end of August. The engineering of this magnificent piece of aviation design is highlighted by the headlights of an airfield vehicle and the tyres sit firmly on the tarmac at an exact parking spot according to the aircraft's length in order for it to be met by air bridges and service trucks.
