  • It is 07.45 on a dark, wintry morning and from behind, we follow a lone commuter who walks along a snow-covered path in Ruskin Park, an otherwise green space in the south London borough of Herne Hill, Lambeth. Street lights are still illuminating the road in the background and the blue light of early morning has fast becoming another day of snow showers and chilly temperatures. No grit or salt has been sprinkled on this slippery path and the person walks carefully carrying an umbrella from falling sleet which is soon to turn to rain as the temperature rises. Tall 100 year-old mature ash trees whose trunks form an avenue of cover and the commuter proceeds towards their neighbours to the station beyond. A single 4x4 car makes its way through this still quiet street with lights blazing.

  • In late afternoon winter sun, a lady emerges from deep shadow wearing a fur hat on the Kings Road in Chelsea, London, England. Foreign magazines line a rack of an outdoor newsagent and we only see the lady's head in the sunlight. There is a low colour temperature orange glow to the picture and only the lady's face wrapped in a fur hat and the magazine covers can be seen in detail. There are few highlights apart from the magazines in the sun, and more shadow area making this a dark image. The Kings Road has been famous in London since the 60s when fashion and flower power was the label most associated with being young and hip in the Swinging Sixties. It is more sober these days but families and young people tend to be wealthier, white and middle-class than other areas such as Carnaby Street which is seen as seedy and cheap.

But business such as theatres will again have to close from Thursday, and for a period of at least one month.

  • A tuna fish's sharp yellow fin protrudes from shredded ice at the Cyprea Marine Foods processing factory on Himmafushi Island, Maldives. The 50kg carcasses have been swimming across the Indian Ocean non-stop since birth and having just been line-caught by freelance boat crews who share profits for only high-quality fish that passes stringent health tests. The tuna has been encased in ice since being landed at sea to keep a low-temperature body core so the workers cut out the prime flesh as quickly as possible before boxing the resulting chunks of steak for export by air to Europe and in particular for customers such as UK's Sainsbury's supermarket. The Sri Lankan butchers are ex-fishermen and widowers, having lost their families during the Tsunami. Using extremely sharp knives, they skillfully remove valuable meat and throw away the rest.

  • A man of Afro-Caribbean birth, clutches at his scarf to keep out freezing temperatures during a cold snap in south London. Falling snow has settled on the man's black hair and even turned his eyelashes white after his walk from home to a local bus stop from where he is trying to commute to work. Because of skin colour, the white snowflakes make this picture a largely monochrome scene, adding to the bleak sense of wintry conditions. He is clearly unprepared for winter, wearing neither hat nor gloves and looks chilled to the bone thanks to the heat he's losing through his head and upper body. The climate of this part of the northern hemisphere can be ferocious for those ill-equipped or at the very least, unpleasant for those from warmer parts of the world.

But unlike on public transport, face coverings are not compulsory so shop floors and shopping practices have had to be adapted to ensure customers’ social distances, amid fears of a second infection wave. • An elderly gentleman has just emerged from a swim in the cold waters off Paignton, the seaside town in Devon, south-west England. Still to towel himself down, he looks chilled to the bone but stands talking to friends out of view. The man wears dark trunks (costume) and has a large belly but otherwise looks fit and healthy, a true picture of health for a man of his age, after swimming in these seas for many years and enjoying the endorphins that are stimulated after wild, outdoor swims.

  • Londoners experience the unexpected intensity of localised solar rays, reflected off the concave plate glass windows of one of the capital's newest skyscrapers known as the Walkie-talkie. The hotspot has surprised developers and passers-by below and which has already melted a parked car and left soft street fittings smouldering in Eastcheap Street, City of London, the capital's financial district. One thermometer placed in the street reached 144F (62 celsius) and others off the scale and city workers poured out of their offices at lunchtime to witness the strange phenomena of intense, Biblical light and blistering heat.

  • On a dark evening in the Welsh countryside eight ventilated hemispherical glasshouses called Solardomes have been 'painted' with gels and with coloured flash strobes while a torch has streaked whiter light in this scientific facility. Replicating climate change and its effects on plant-life, this experiment run by the University of Aberystwyth has run for 20 years, its research being invaluable to our understanding how rising levels of greenhouse gases (CO2) will affect photosynthesis and therefore plant food growth. By increasing the levels of such gasseous pollutants are we now more sure of how the biology in seminatural grasslands alters. Glowing red, the Solardomes sit like futuristic houses on another planet. Surrounding hills are dark on this evening but there is still detail in the fast-fading sky. ..

  • With a look of delight on her face, a four year-old girl stamps through fallen snow in a field near her home in Bielefeld, Germany. Wearing a vibrant red bobble hat and matching coat, she smiles towards the viewer with the pleasure of any child enjoying the excitement of fresh snow. Ski or sledge tracks can be seen at her feet but she is the only person in this empty landscape, as if she's walking on her own through the snowy hills. It is the winter of 1967 and the reds are very vibrant and dominant from the Kodachrome film used which also has a wonderful muted blue colour cast in the mid-tones giving the picture a chilly, wintry feel reminiscent of the classic days of early photography when shifts in color gave a faded and dated look.
