  • Children play in a desolate street in the town of Nova Huta. Amid the filthy walls of their tenement building home and of the grim, car less street beyond, two older children play in their doorway while younger friends peer from around a corner. It is horribly depressing and unhealthy place to grow up and these children are pale and yet seem happy, with smiles on their faces. The famous steel works can be seen st the end of the street. After the war, Stalin decided to build an ideological communist fantasy just outside Krakow: a model town and immense steelworks of the future. The steelworks was named after Lenin and the town would be called Nova Huta. At its peak, 27,000 people worked at the Lenin Steelworks. But Solidarity grew strong forcing strikes over pay and recognition over their union. Today, it is an economic and ecological disaster area. .

  • As a cyclist pedals his way along a path, a man enjoys late afternoon sunshine in Brockwell Park, Herne Hill, London England. Seen from a central hill in this Victorian-designed open space, there are the terraced housing and larger tenement buildings behind that rise above the tree line in this undulating landscape. The person on the bicycle has been caught between two tree trunks as he approaches the man relaxing on the park bench and another pedestrian is seen further in the distance walking near a red car. It is scene of serenity among the urban sprawl of a capital city, where quiet places are precious and idyllic corners of greenery are highly-sought after. The Brockwell Hall Park Estate was created and landscaped in 1811. It was purchased for the people of Lambeth & Southwark and opened as a public park in 1892 by Lord Rosebery.

  • A filthy alleyway in Toxteth, Liverpool amid socially-deprived streets and terraced housing. Graffiti of girls' names has been painted on to the brick wall of a tenement building but is now peeling off. Weeds have grown around the cobbled pavement and the windows are boarded up in a landscape of urban dereliction and social depravity.

  • Clothing hanging on a washing line in a Pimlico housing estate in London. Reflecting a bygone era when the residents of inner-city tenements and housing estates hung out their washing on wash days (usually Mondays in the UK), relying on honesty and the community spirit to ensure their safety. Today we see this rarely apart from courtyards like this in west London. The walls are made fromclassic London stock bricks but the colours of a vibrant 21st century Britain are seen strung along the line.
