  • During a time-exposure of a few seconds, the ambient neon and natural evening light of Miami Beach's Ocean Drive are mixed together to give an atmospheric mood of vitality, bustle and excitement in this tropical city. The vertical-aligned name of the famous Colony Hotel is seen through the darkened window of an SUV (4x4). Glowing pinks and blues are vivid in this scene where beautiful people and expensive cars cruise along slowly, each parading bodywork and personality. Palm trees sway about in the coastal breeze, blurring during the exposure and making them ghostly against the fading sky of early evening. This is vibrant district of Miami, Florida. The place to hang-out and be noticed.

  • Crowds of visitors and locals gather on the terrace of an Ocean Drive cafe in Miami Beach. It is early evening and we see the blurred people moving about over the picture during a time-exposure of a few seconds. The colours of ambient neon lights that these streets are well-known for have become very vivid with bright pinks and reds a main feature of this scene. A menu board listing cocktail drinks prices stands on the sidewalk. Candles have been lit in glass jars on table tops. Ghostly, blurred Palm trees sway about in the coastal breeze against the fading sky of early evening. This is a vibrant district of tropical Miami, Florida. The place to hang-out and be noticed. • Looking upwards through a gap in some trees, we see in the background the huge skyscraper office tower of the Commerzbank (Europe's tallest building (1997-2005), designed by Sir Norman Foster) and other institutions in the financial district of Frankfurt, Germany. In the foreground is a set of traffic lights with a traffic lane arrow direction sign and during the long time-exposure the red, amber and green lights have registered on the film to say stop, ready, go. There is a light mist settling on the cityscape which can be seen around the intense of the street lighting giving the scene a futuristic atmosphere like the Blade Runner movie. Apart from the prime colours (colors) emitted by the traffic lights, the image has an otherwise green hue including the tree foliage which is illuminated by the artificial lamps. The leaves are also blurring because of a faint breeze which registers during a long time-exposure.

  • Moving fast past a farmhouse building on a busy UK A road, unseen traffic leaves its light trails on an otherwise dark winter night near the giant DIRFT warehouse logistics park in Daventry, Northamptonshire England. Some rooms are lit in this remote residence which show signs of occupation. Red tail lights from cars, lorries and trucks streak by with tall traces of container traffic leaves light on the picture, diagonally leaving their mark. It is a very busy highway on which to own a home but this infrastructure is a vital route that keeps Britain's logistics moving across the country 24/7.

  • Ventilated hemispherical glasshouse Solardomes replicate global warming for plants with CO2 levels experiment
    solardomes01-05-06-1992.jpg
  • On a dark evening in the Welsh countryside eight ventilated hemispherical glasshouses called Solardomes have been 'painted' with gels and with coloured flash strobes while a torch has streaked whiter light in this scientific facility. Replicating climate change and its effects on plant-life, this experiment run by the University of Aberystwyth has run for 20 years, its research being invaluable to our understanding how rising levels of greenhouse gases (CO2) will affect photosynthesis and therefore plant food growth. By increasing the levels of such gasseous pollutants are we now more sure of how the biology in seminatural grasslands alters. Glowing red, the Solardomes sit like futuristic houses on another planet. Surrounding hills are dark on this evening but there is still detail in the fast-fading sky. ..

  • From a low angle looking upwards to the building exterior of the Hotel Negresco on the Promenade de Anglais, Nice. We see the colourful orange light bulbs and the overall green hue from sodium illumination and the blue of the evening sky. In the foreground is an example of the ubiquitous palm trees that line the Côte d'Azur. The Hotel Negresco on the Promenade des Anglais on the Baie des Anges in Nice, France was named for Henri Negresco (1868-1920) who had the palatial hotel constructed in 1912. Noted for its doormen dressed in the manner of the staff in 18th-century elite bourgeois households, complete with red-plumed postilion hats, the hotel also offers renowned gourmet dining at Le Chantecler. In 2003 the Hotel Negresco was listed by the government of France as a National Historic Building. Nice is a major tourist centre and a leading resort on the French Riviera. Located in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur région, it is a commune and the préfecture (administrative capital) of the Alpes-Maritimes département.

  • Canary Wharf tower seen from below, London Docklands, East London England. A pedestrian light shows both green for walk and red for don't walk while a street light that has just been illuminated starts to glow on the right. Blue light of the late day and an overcast sky makes the scene gloomy and slightly threatening. Canary Wharf is the product of the 1980s financial boom when during the office of Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, huge building projects such as the Docklands consortium saw vast changes in London's landscape.

  • Two window cleaners safely attached to an outside cradle, wash the large panes of glass at a building at Broafgate in the City of London. While stretching with his long sponge into the corner of this window, one worker on the left is wiping soapy liquid onto the grimy glass before cleaning it off with a squeegee. His colleague on the right is communicating with the cradle operator in the building's roof, way above these men, in order to raise the cradle and allowing the men to achive the correct operating height. Far below them is the capital's Square Mile, London's financial and oldest area. The famous dome of St Paul's Cathedral can be seen most prominently although it is a grey day across this modern metropoliss skyline.

  • A wide night view looking down on the rubber-stained of runway 27R at Heathrow Airport. During a time-exposure and partially-lit by the headlights and spotlights of an airfield emergency vehicle, we see the giant numbers 27 that landing pilots will see from a mile away as they descend towards the airport's threshold. The numbers relate to the compass bearing that the line of the runway takes: In this case 270 degrees from north and has a parallel southern twin. Across the number two we also see a set of taxiway lights that help the steering pilot navigate across the airfield and line-up on the departing runway. .From writer Alain de Botton's book project "A Week at the Airport: A Heathrow Diary" (2009). .

  • The Mile End Road leading up to the City of London with the Natwest tower on the horizon. The evening exodus is underway, the rush-hour for commuters and car drivers who head east and west along this old road to and from the City of London, through the poorer east end to the wealth and prosperity of the financial district. Light trails from the vehicles's headlights and tail lights register during a time exposure and the pink city skies to the west glow above the tall office complexes on the skyline.
